Application and October a, 1928.. ser al no. 140,863.
This invention relates to an all-metal unit particularly adapted for use in connection with sinks for kitchens and other uses, and
aims to provide a strong, durable and lasting construction which includes in its organization a'table and drain board as well as a splash apron for protecting the wall adjacent the sink.
,A primary object of the. invention is to provide a novel and practical constructionof the character set forth which made from sheet metal by stamping or equivalent processes, thereby to not only provide a comparatively cheap construction but one that will be easier to install than wood and be far'more lasting and less liable to rot out, and which will also be far more sanitary than wood construction which holds dampness and moisture. In; that connection the present invention contemplates the PI'OVlSlOIl of an all-metal construction which may be painted or enameled in any desired finlsh to enhance the appearance thereof and at the same time preserve the metal, thus add ng to the longevity of the construction.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction which may be used .in
connection with standard sinks of the type readily available to the plumbing fixture trade. 4
With the above and other objects in view which willmore readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the combined unit.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the combined table, drain and. sink supporting member, a fragmentary portion of the apron showing.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectionalview taken through the vertical and horizontal members of the unit at the location of the faucet fixture hood and the sink receiving opening. Fig. 5 is another transverse sectional view taken through the vertical and horizontal members at the location of the drain board.
similar reference characters designate cor- -5 responding parts throughout the several figures'ofthe d awings. y The present invention. preferably includes in its organization a main horizontally 'dis-' posed member A and a" vertically arranged 00 cooperating member B, both of which combins to providea sink unit having novel features of construction which not only stiffen and reinforce the sheet .metal to give: the same the necessary strength and rigidity but 65. also provide convenient means for handling chinaware or other articles which are 'usu- .ally cleansed and placed adjacent the sink to drain. The main horizontal member A is preferably arranged on any suitable support or stand designated generally as S and shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the stand being placed at a location convenient to the plumbing fixtures which sup ly the hot and cold water at the location 0 the sink. 7 The said main horizontal member A preferably includes a relatively flat table portion T and a stifiened corrugated portion C. which constitutes a drain D. The valleys between the corrugations incline downs wardly as indicated at O in Fig. 3 toward the opening E which is adapted to receive a sink of standard type. The opening E is preferably provided with a depressed flange portion F and has a plurality of countersunk openings 1 adapted to register with openings in the marginal flange of a sink 2 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4) thereby to'receive bolts or equivalent fastenings to suspend the sink from the flange F. Thefront edge and one end edge of the member A are formed with the downturned edge portion 3 whose lower edge is pressed inwardly as indicated at 4; to provide a substantially channeled edge portion for two sides of the member A. In that way the member A is substantially reinforced at the .ed'ge's. And, for the purpose offacilitating the attachment of the said member to the wooden support or frame S the inner edge of the pressed in portion 4 is continued downwardly and doubled back upon itself as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5 to 'provide an attaching flange 5 having openings 6 for receiving the fastenings for connecting the 105 'member A to the stand or support. The
rear edge and right hand end of the memher A is provided with an upstanding flange 7 in Fig. 4 to register with the pressed out fixture portion 8 of the vertical member B.
This vertical member B is of angular formation and includes the end B both of which constitute a splash apron. Said member BB' is 'preferablystifl'ened at its top and end edges by having the metal turned backwardly thereon as indicated'at 9, thereby avoiding any rough edges and compensating forthe thickness of t 1e flange 7 of the member A when assembled therewith against a wall or other support. The portion 8 of the member D which is pressed out adjacent the opening E of the member'A is intended toprovide a hood or housing for conceal ng the water pipes and the connections leading to the faucets. For the purpose of providing a neatappearance and also affording a bearingfor the plumbing fixtures the front wall of the housing 8 is formed with the inturne'd thimble portions 10 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
When the member 3 is supported on the stand or the like S, the splash apron B may be placed in position so that-the'lower edge thereof overlaps the upstandin back and end flange '7 of the member A tiereby providing a water proof joint between the splash apron and the horizontal member. Also it will be observed that the said member A is of relatively great length as compared with its width and not only provides a drain board for draining water back into the sink but also provides adequate table space as indicated at T for supporting chinaware or other articles that have been dried. Further, the table portion T'affords 0011- venient means for supporting dishes and the like and the preparation of food and the entire unit provides a very eflicient and convenient accessory for the kitchen, pantry or other place of installation.
Accordingly, one of the features of the present invention is the provision of the main horizontal member A made of metal and so constructed that it not only provides a drain board and table but also provides for receiving a sink of standard construction. The unit is particularly serviceable and of great utility not only because of its ease of installation but because of the sub: stantial economies involved in its production and at the same time .it has lasting and durable qualities which are essential to a device of this character.
WVithout further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the 1nvention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A combination sink and splash apron including a sheet metal horizontal. member having depending channel sliapedfront and end portions and an upstanding back flange, and said member being also provided with an opening, a corrugated stiffening portion formed adjacent one end of the opening and constituting a drain board and a sheet metalmember providing the splash apron and adapted to be'disposed in a, vertical plane with respect to the horizontal member and overlapping said upstanding back flangeand secured thereto.
2. A combination sink and splash apron construction including a sheet metal horizontal member having reinforced side and end portions and the body thereof being formed with an'opening surrounded by a depressed "sink attaching flange, and the flat portions of said body' being provided with a plain table portion and a corrugated portion adjacent the opening providin a drain board, a flange formed at the bac of said horizontal member, and a sheet metal member constituting the splashapron secured to said flange and having a portion thereof pressed outwardly in the zone of the opening to provide a fixture supporting portion.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature.
