This invention relates to photography and more particularly to photographic film winding machines. One object of my in- I vention is to provide a film winding machine with an expansible hub upon which a coil of film niay be wound, and from which stantially cone shape so that. the.film coil.
may be readily slid from the hub without is losing its'shape. Another object is to provide a combined rotating and hub operating handle. Still another object is to provide a combined handle and spring latch for turning the hub and altering the size of the hub, and other objects will appear hereinafter from the following specification, the novel features being particularly pointed out in the claims at'the end thereof. f Coming now to the drawingswherein like reference characters denote like parts throughout Fig. 1- isa part section and part side elevation of a film ,winding device constructed in accordance with and embodying one form of my invention;

This device is designed for windin u coils of motion picture film on a hub w ich may be retracted so that the coil may be drawn therefrom. As shown in Fig. 1, the frame of the winding machine may include a supporting arm 1 having a bearing 2 bored out at 3, preferably carrying ball bearings 4 to support a hollow shaft 5. This shaft is provided with a shoulder- 6 at one end and a threaded portion 7 adapted to support a plate 8 which carries an annular member?) to which a cheek plate 10 may be attached by screws 11. These screws are countersunk so that the heads will not project from the plate 10.
' The hub member includes a plurality of elements 12 hinged at 13 to member 9' andhaving curved outside walls 14 which in:
substantially cylindrical hub upon which convolutions of film may be wound. Each hub section 12 is provided with a downwardly extending flange 15 and an outwardly extending flange 16, there being a cam surface 17 between these two flange sections. The'se cam surfaces are adapted to engage .the wedge shaped member 18 which is adapted to support the hub sections in a film receiving position, or which may be withdrawn to allow the film sections to assume the film removing position shown in Fig. 2.
The wedge-shapedmember 18 is carried on a plunger 19 which is afiixed to'the end of a shaft 20, there bein a shoulder 21 between these two parts. 11 the opposite end of shaft 20 there is an enlarged head 22' which is normally pressed in the direction shown by the arrow A by means of a spring 23 whichpresses against a shoulder 24 at one end and a second shoulder 25 formed in the hollow shaft 5.
The spring 23 presses head 22 against a latch member which consists of two faces 26 and 27 which are joined by a curved edge 29. This latch member is pivoted at 30 to the cars 32 which are aliixed tothe sleeve shaft 5. The latch member is continued at 33 to form a crank whichterminates in a handle 34.
Handle 34 may be either rotated to turn sleeve'shaft. 5, and with it'the film winding hub, or the handle 34 may be swung up-" wardly in the direction shown by the arrow B, in which case the head 22 is permitted to ride around the curved surface 29 onto face 27 of the latch. This movement permits shoulder 21 to move against the end 35, of shaft 5 and permits each of, thehub.
sections 12 to move about their pivots 13 into the film discharging position shown in Fig. 2. Itshould be noted that when in i this position the curved outside surface 14 ofthe hub sections forms a substantially cone-shaped hub from which the film coil may be easily withdrawn. It should also be noted that as those portions of thehub friction material, such asleather or the like at 41. This clutch element may turn with respect to shaft 5, A second clutch element 42 is mounted to slide axially of shaft 5 upon a key 43 which extends into the key slot 44, thus the clutch element 42 turns with shaft 5. spring 45 normally presses the clutch elements together and the tension on spring 45 may be adjusted by the nuts 46 and 47.. This clutch permits the hub to be rotated by power to wind the convolutions of film F upon it, and should the winding speed differ from that of the hub a slip will occur between the clutch members 41 and 42. After the winding is completed or nearly completed the power drive may be disconnected andv the final turn or two may be made by rotating handle 34. When the coil is complete the operator may swing handle 34 upwardly contracting the hub 7 so that the film coil may be readily removed.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent'is, l 1. In a film winding device,'the combination with a hub, said hub including a plurality of hinged hub sections, of a tubular.

2. In a film windingdevice, the combination with an expansible hub, means to expand and contract the hub, a shaft support- 4 said crank on its pivot whereby movement of the handle in one, direction may turn the hub and in another direction may control the size of the hub. v
3. In a film winding device, the combination with an expansible hub, means to expand and contract the hub, including a plunger, a hollow shaft supporting the hub and plunger, a crank and handle for turning the shaft, a pivotal support for the crank, said crank including a cam means for moving the plunger when said crank is turned by said pivotal support, whereby the handle may turn the hub and may be used to alter the size of the hub'through-the plunger.
. 4. In a film winding device, the combination with an expansive hub, means to expand and contract thehub including a plunger, a hollow shaft supporting the hub and plunger, a crank and handle for turning the shaft, a pivotal support carried by the shaft for the crank, said crank being adapted to move the shaft through its pivotal connection therewith to rotate said hub, a cam mounted on said crank contacting with an end of the plunger, a springadapted to hold the endof the plunger against said cam whereby byturning the crank about its pivot-a1 connection with the hollow shaft the cam be actuated to expand and contract said hub.
