I IMPROVEMENT IN HANDLES FOR MILK-CANS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,647, dated September 14, 1875; application filed January 5, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD B. CURTIS, of

" Nellsville, in the county of Allegany and State or handle proper, a socket for use in handling the vessel to which such handle is attached, and a bowmade with stops for abutting against the shield so as to allow the bow to be held in a horizontal position for use, said bow being also made with a lug that projects through the shield in such manner as to hold the bow away from the shield, as hereinafter fully set forth.

In the drawings illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a central vertical section, of a handle whose bow is made with a stop or lug.

In the handles heretofore used upon milkcans especially a great objection is found in that the bow or handle proper is allowed to swing back against the can, thus not only making an unpleasant noise, but also injuring the can. To avoid this is the object of my invention; and in carrying out my invention 1 use a metallic shield or attaching plate, A, having proper provisions for being secured to the can or other article on which it is to be placed, provided with a semi-cylindrical portion, B, forming a recess or pocket on its rear side, and a socket, 0, made solid therewith on its face. A bow or handle proper, D, having a cross-bar, d, plays in the recess B, and has stops on a at the ends of the cross-bar, which, when the bow is raised, 'as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, abut against the shield, and

serve to retain the bow. in a horizontal position for use. An opening, 0, is made in the upper part of the curve of the portion B, and

through this projects a stop or lug, b, on the I am aware that it is not original with me to so attach a handle to. its plate as to prevent it from rattling against the vessel to which it is applied, and hence I do not claim this broadly; but

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y In the herein-described handle, the combination, with a shield,,A, having an opening, 0, made in the socket portion B, of the bow D, constructed with a lug, b, on its cross-bar, operating in the opening 0, in themanner and for the purpose specified.
