'.llhis invention relates tostoragebattery tools and Vmore particularly to a device for removing either the assembled covers and plates or the complete assembly of a storage battery cell. u p
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which enables a very irm grip toibe taken. upon thecell and which; will permit removal ofy the cell withoutthe necessity-of steaming or burning away the composition by means of which the cell-is usually sealed.
A still further object of the inventionis to provide a, device of this character which, if desired, may be employed as a handle for carrying thebattery from place to `place.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily applied to and removed `from the battery, which is simple in its construction and operation andywhch will be durable and eliicient in service.
Fig. 2. I
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the plug detached.
Referring now more particularl to the drawings, the numeral 10 general y designates the usual cell cover of'a storage battery cell and 11 the threaded opening formed kin these cells for the reception of the vent cap (not shown).
In accordance with my invention, I provide a metallic plug 12 having its lower end eXteriorly threaded, as at 13, for engage,- ment in the threaded opening 11 and its upper end provided with a head 14,the lower surface of which is adapted to seat, upon the upper surface of the cell cover about the `threaded opening when the plug is fully inserted. The plug 12 has formed therein an axial bore 15 through which is directed a shaft 16. The lower end of the bore 15 is conical, as indicated at 17, and the shaft at its lower end has a correspondingly shaped enlargement 18. VThe threaded section of the plug .is longitudinally split at circumferentially spacedl points, as indicated at 19. 'l`heheadI 1 4,` has in its upper surface a groove 19 extending diametricallythereof and, upon the shaft 16 is secured a pair of;V dametrically opposed `radially. .extending lugs 20iadapted to engage in the groove 19 atopposite sides ofthe bore 15 and lock the shaft' and plug `against frelative rotation. Theupperendof the shaft lhas atransversely extendngfhandle 21 serving as a means` whereby the shaftj'may be rotated, or` as` a handle, bymeans .of which the shaft and an article secured thereto may be trans- In the use of tl'iedevice, the usual plug-,of the` cellhaving beenremoved, the plug 12 is substituted thereforand threaded thereinto by` moving thev shaftdownwardly untill the lugs 20 engage in the groove 19 and then rotating the shaft. The lugs 20 are so spaced from the lower end of the shaft that this lower end is held above the plates of the battery and will not come in damaging contact therewith. lVhen the plug 12 is screwed home, the shaft through the handle 21may be employed to either Withdraw` the cell in the cover of which the plug is inserted or to remove a portion of this asthe threaded portion 13, so that this portion will fit tightly within the threads ofthe battery cell and there is no danger of stripping these threads. p
It will be obvious that the construction hereinbefore set forth is capable of a certain range of change and modification without departing from the spirit of my invention and I accordingly do `not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
.I claim 1 1. In a storage battery tool, a plug having a threaded portion and adapted to replace the usual vent plug of a storage battery cell, a handle therefor and means operated by the application of strain to the handle for expanding the threaded portion of the plug.
2. In a storage battery tool, a plug `having a threaded portion and adapted to replace the usual threaded vent plug oi a storage battery cell, the plug having a bore, a handle embodying a portion extended through said bore, the threaded portion of the plug being longitudinally slotted and means upon said handle wedging into the bore of the plug at the threaded portion thereof upon the application of strain to the handle.
Y 3. In a storage battery tool, a plug having a threaded portion and adapted to replace the usual threaded vent plug ofA a storage battery cell, pthe'plug having a bore,
a handle embodying a portion extendedV ing relative rotation 'of the plug and han-v dle. Y e
4. In a storage battery tool, a plug having a threaded portion and adapted to replace the usual threaded vent plug of a storage battery cell, the plug having an axial bore increasing in diameter toward its lower end, the threaded portion of the plug being disposed at they lower end thereof and being longitudinally slotted, a shaft directed through the bore of the plug and having an upwardly tapering enlargement for coaction with the bore and a handle upon the upper end of the shaft. Y
5. In a storage battery tool, a plug having ka threaded portion and adapted to replace the usual threaded vent plug of a storage battery cell, the plug having an axial bore increasing in diameter toward its lower end, the threaded rtion of the plug being disposed at the ower end thereof Vand being longitudinally slotted, a shaft directed through the bore of the plug and having an upwardly tapering enlargement forcoaction with the bore, a handle upon the upper end of the shaft, said plug having in the upper surface thereof a diametrically extending groove and means upon the shaft and engaging in said groove uponl'downward movement of the shaft through the plug for limiting such downward movement and for locking the against relative rotation.
In testimony whereofI hereunto affix my signature. v
