This. invention relates to an attachment for printing presses and has special reference to a severing means associated with the means of supply for printing presses.
More particularly, this invention relates to an automatic cutter for use in connection with the web roll suppl for printing presses whereby when one we roll is nearly exhausted, the web from that roll is severed just subsequent to the attachment thereto of a new web from a fresh roll.
It is usual in supply devices for printing presses employed in newspaper plants and the like to provide a reel having a plurality of web rolls mounted thereon whereby the a printing presses maybe continuous in action, the reel being .rotatable in order that a new web .roll may be brought into position to take the place of an exhausted web roll without stopping the operation of the printing press. When the expiring web roll is nearly exhausted the fresh 'web roll is brought into position such that the end of the web thereof ma be attached to the web of the expiring roli without materiall decreasing the Web speed whereafter the atter web is cut or torn. Printing presses of repent date are designed to run at a continuous and unchangeable speed whereby no interruption in the speed of the web is necessary,
and therefore, no time has been lost in the I to sever the expiring web.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a cutter for a web roll printing press which is simple in operation, inexpensive to manufacture and durable.
A further object of this invention is to provide. an automatic cutter for use in connection with web roll printing presses.
Further objects and advantages will be apparent from the description and the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification to which reference may now be had for a more complete understanding of the characteristic features of this invention in which drawings:

Referring now to the drawings and more particularly to Fig. 1 thereof, the supply means for the printing press comprises a pair of supports 10 having a shaft 11 supported thereon and journalled therein. A reel 12 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 11 and is either provided with means for rotating the same continually or at the will of the attendant. These means for rotating the reel are not shown and it is believed need not be shown as they are very well known in the art.
A plurality of web rolls 13 are mounted on the reel 12, the particular embodiment shown containin three such web rolls, the reel be-. ing provi ed with three spider arms having suitable bearings 14 for receiving mechanism for supporting each of said rolls. The bearings 14 are each provided with a spindle 15 which extends horizontally therethrough and is reciprocably mounted therein. Each of the spindles 15 contain a rack 16 on one side thereofwhich is suitably-cut or formed to mesh with a pinion 17, which latter is fixedly mounted on a shaft extending horizontally through the bearing 14, said pinion being disposed in a recessformed in said bearing. The shaft 18 is operated by means of a suitable handle 19 which is mounted on an extension thereof. One end of the spindle 15 is provided with an aperture for receiving a shank portion 20 of a centering device having a conical centering head 21.
In the particular construction shown, the web of the web rolls 13 arewoundon spools 13 which are preferably made of aper. For the purpose of supporting the we rolls 13 a pair ofchucks 2are provided for enagement with the conical centering devices.

course thisdimension is merely for purposes of illustration and the shank portion may. be extended or shortened at thewlll of the user. The chuck is also provided with a flange for engagingthe edge ofthe web roll to limit the extent to which the chuck will enter the spool, and a conical shaped central depression for engaging the conical centering head 20 or 23.
When it is desired to mount one of the web rolls in position in the printing press, the handle 19 is rotated in a direction to draw the centering head rearwardly and to permit of a sufficient clearance for the web roll to be inserted between the centering heads 20 and 23. One end of the web roll is lifted and located so thatthe conical center 23 enters the conical depression in the chuck 24. The other end of the web roll is then raised into a substantially horizontal position and the handle 19 is then turned in an opposite direction so as to extend the centering head 21 into engagement with the conica amount of tension may be placed on these centering heads to either retard the movement of the web roll or to permit of a free I action thereof.
Referring now to Fig. 5 of the drawings, the full line showing represents a condition wherein one of the web rolls nearly exhausted and the web therefrom passes over a guide roller 25. The dotted line position of this figure shows the web of the new roll about to become attached to the expiring web, the web roll which is nearly exhausted entering a jaw shaped member of a cutting device preparatory to severing the expiring web. The new web roll has its edges provided with a paste in order that it may become attached to the expiring web just prior to the latter web being severed.

On the opposite side of the vertical member 30 and secured to the lower edge thereof is a hinge member 32, one leaf of which is the vertically exbolted or otherwise suitably secured to the flooror other support thus providing a pivot upon which this cutter may be pivotally mounted. In order to hold the jaw shaped portion in a substantially horizontal position, a horizontally extending arm 33 is seloo cured to one edge of the member 26, the
other end extending back to engage the resilient member 30.
In the operation of this device when the reel 12 rotates into a position such that the newweb roll is about to replace the expiring web roll, the latter will engage the jam shaped member 26 substantially as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, whereby the teeth 28 will perforate the web at one edge thereof and the inner rubber surface of the jaw member will act as a brake to prevent the web roll from rotating, whereafter the web will tear across the entire lateral surface thereof.
As the reel continues its movement, the expiring web roll urges the cutter into a position such as is indicated in the dotted line position B, wherein the jaw member 26 will pivot on the spring member 30 and the latter member will be flexed to accommodate the new position. Upon continuing the movement, the jaw shaped member 26 will )crmit the exhausted roll to pass the line defined by the center of the web roll 13, the pivot of the bracket 29 and the pivot of the hinge 32 whereafter the flexed upright member 30 action as hereinbefore described will be per- ,this purpose, the

When the new-web roll has become partially exhausted, the cutter is manually laced back into a position such as is shown in full lines in Fig. 2, whereby the same mitted. Inasmuch as a varied amount of paperis left on the expired web roll, the diameter of the latter varies and the jaw member 26 must accommodate these variations. While but a single embodiment of this invention is herein shown and described, it is to be understood that the same is not to be limited to that specific construction since various modifications may .occur to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention, and I desire therefore that the structure be limited only by the showing of the prior art" for supporting the running roll and the fresh roll of a web roll supply apparatus, of automatic means mounted independently of said apparatus disposed in the path of said running roll as said reel is rotated for severing the web from said running roll when it is desired to feed the new web from said fresh roll.

A cutter for a web roll supply ap-- paratus including a rotatable reel forsup porting a running roll and afresh roll comprising-a gripping memberdisposed in the path of said runn ng roll assaid reel is rotated, the concave surface of said member engaging said running roll, a pivotally mounted spring support,sa1d spring support having a weighted extension thereonfor normally holding the same in a vertical operative position, and cutting means on said gripping member for severing the web on said running roll when it is desired to feed the new web from the'fresh roll, said gripping member being pivotally mounted on said spring support whereby said reel is permitted to continue its rotation after said cutting action whereafter said cutter will spring to an inoperative position.
