The invention concerns a composite knitting implement, i. e., one built upvof a plurality of members to present a comparatively thin forward portion to work between and in immediate association with the needles and a shank is built up b the addition of a member or e stem portion of the member first mentioned, said built up stem portion being of a thickness to run in the groove or slot of the bed of the machine.

Combined with the stem and butt portions of the implement is the auxiliary or reinforcinfr member composed of a stem por-A tion b an a butt portion c. spaced apart from the main wall o a distance equal to the thickness of the butt portions a2 of the main member, so that the auxiliary member may be joined to the main member by slipping the hollow butt member c onto the butt a2 of the main member a. 1
This auxiliary member is made from soft stock stated, the main member a is stamped out of tempered stock. Referring to Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8, the auxillary or reinforcing member d with its butt is stamped out of thin tempered stock of t-he form and siz'e suitable to lay alongside of the stem portion al and butt a2 of the main member a, being similar in this respect to the form first described in so fai' as the stem portion is concerned.
In this second form shown in Figs. 5 to S the auxiliary member is held to the main member by a hollow cap piece e. This is made from soft stock drawn into the i11- verted cup shape shown and then tempered. It is of a size to tit closely over the two butt portions a2 and d1. This cap may bc pressed down over these butt portions to be maintained thereon by its tight iit alone.
It will be understood that the main member of the composite implement is of the form shown in Fig. f5, and this is combined either with the form of auxiliary member shown in Fig. 3, or with the auxiliary members shown in Figs. 6 and 7 ,to make up the complete implement.
It will be understood that with my improvement accuracy in construction can be secured and particularly as between the stem and nose portion of the implement. It has been the practice to form the implement in one piece with its forward or nose portion of reduced thickness and then the implement wouldbe tempered, but this is ob- Jectionable because ot' the liability for Warping to take place.
It will b e noted that in both forms of the implement the butts of the main and auxiliary members lie side by side and in contact and that these butt portions are held together. In the first form the means for holding the butts together-.consist of the flanges o1, 011 integral with the butt c, while in the second form the holding means consists of the independent cap '6.

In both instances the butt a,2 of the main member is thus reinforced by means embracing it; in Fig. 3 b the flanges C bent around its edges an the cap member. Thus the holding means in itself presents edge wear surfaces.
I claim:
1. A composite knitting implement for knitting machines having a main member provided with a forward or nose portion to work between the needles, and an integral stem portion provided with a butt, and an auxiliary member having a stem and butt portion to lie alongside the stem and butt portion of the main member and means for holding the butt portions of the said members together, said means presenting wear surfaces, substantially as described.
2. A composite knitting implement for knitting machines according to claim 1, inl
which the means for holding the auxiliary and main members together consists of a cap member fitting over the butts of saidmembers.
3. A composite knitting implement for knitting machines having a reduced forward end to work betwenthe needles and a thicker stem and butt portion, consisting of a main member stamped from tempered thin stock, and having a forward portion and a Stem and butt of one thickness, and an auxiliary member having a stem and butt portion to lie alongside of the stern and butt of themain member, with embracing .means holding the butts together.
