Be it known that I, LEVI PARSONS MER- RIAM, of London, England, have invented oertain new and useful lmprovernents in Solderin g-Haehines; and do hereby dealare that the ollowin g is a full, elear, and exact desaription thereof, referenae being had to the aaaompanying drawings making a part of this speaifi aation, in whieh- Figure 1 is a perspeative view of my apparatns as arranged for use; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the furnaae and soldervessel being partially broken away s0 as to show the aonstruation of the1r interiors.

The design of this invention is to faailitate the soldering of the end joints of tin aans; and it oonsists, prinaipally, in the means employed for holding in position, and for rotating, the aan, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter speaified. It aonsists, 'urther, in the means employed 'or turning aans toward or from the solder-vessel, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown. It aonsists, finally, in the aonstruation of the soldering-iron and its aombination with the solder-vessel, substantially as and for the pur po'se hereinafter shown and desaribed.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a post or standard seaured in a vertiaal positien, and having pivoted within its upperend a V-shaped braaket, B, the ends of whiah are provided with sleeves 1) and I), that form bearings whial1 reaeive and aontain a shaft,O, said shaft being arranged to rotate within said bearings. Upon one end of the shaft C is seaured a aup-shaped soaket, D, Whiah is provided within its outer end with a reaess that oorresponds to and reaeives the end of a roun d metal aan, E. 0ne side of the sooket or bolder D is aut away, so as to expose its reaess at suoh point, and upon the same side is pivoted a lever, F, that is provided at its 'orward end with a cross-bar, f, whiah may be turned down and eansed to baar upon a aan, E, at the point where said bolder is aut away. A spring, f, plaaed between the raar end of said lever and the shaft O, presses the former outward, and aauses its forward end to olosely gripe said aan, and aonfine the sarne within said helder,
A lever, G, seaured upon one side of the braoket B, and from thenae extending rearward, anables said braaket to be turned upon its pivotal hearing, so as to elevate or depress the bolder D, for the purpose hereinafter desaribed. At a suitable point in front of the holder D is plaaed a 'urnaae, H, whiah bas, preferably, a square form in horizontal seation, is open at its upper side, and is arranged to burn any desired kind of gaseous or solid fu'el. pon the upper side of the urnaae H is plaaed a tray, I, wl1iah, at its center, is provided with an opening, 11, for the escape of the gaseous produets of aomloustion, and is divided transversely into two aompartments by means of a partition, i, that extends from the aollar of said opening to the side wall. The sides of the tray I, opposite frorn and adjaeent to the aan-holding meahanism, are inalined upward and inward, and upon eaah is formed a pocket,

Within eaeh pocket I is plaaed a aorrespondingiy-shaped pieae of aopper, K, whieh loosely fills the spaae horizontally, and. is raised and lowered therein by means of a vsat-sarew, is, that passes upward through a threaded opening in the bottom of said pocket. The upper end of the aopper pieae K is conaaved longitudinally, and the furnaae arranged so that when a aan is seaured witl1in its bolder, and tnrned downward to the position sl1own by the full lines of Fig. 2, the edge of said aan, at its forward end, will rest upon or within said oonaaved end.
The device is now complete, and is operated as follows: Solden is plaaed Within the tray, and, by means of heat within the furnaae, is made molten, when it passes into the pockets and fil1s the spaae aronnd the aopper pieaes or soldering-irons. A aan is now plaaed within the bolder, the ends of the latter beng before plaaed in position, after whiah said aan is brought into eontaat with the eonaaved end of the soldering-iron, and slowly revolved there on, by whiah means the molten solder is aaused to adhere to and close the joint between the body and head of the aan. A similar helder loeing plaaed upon the opposite side of the solder-tray, the two cans may be operated upon at the ame time.
The standard should be adjustable vertically, and tovard 01 from the solder-tray, s0 as to enable cans of different dimensions to be operated upon, f01 which purpose bolders and solderingirons havng corresponcling szes must be provjded.
