1,675,262 E. FLAGG f' HINGE Original Filed Feb. 4, 1926 ATTORNEYS Patented June 26, 1928.
ERNEST Frase, or nnpwfronir,
HINGE.
Original application filed February 4, 1926, Serial No.` 85,@41, 192e. serial N. 114,5962., g
This invention relates to a new and 1mproved form of hinge. l
An object of the invention is to provide a hinge which is simple, durable and strong and made of a minimum number of partsl capable of supporting a maximum weight of door with a minimum defacement of the door and a minimum'liability of becoming loosened.
This application is, with the exception of the modified form of hinge shown in Fig. Ll, a division of my application Serial #86,()4-1, filed February 4, 1.926.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, of which Figure 1 is a horizontal section through the door and the jamb showing the hinge in plan view; l v
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the hinge;
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line IL-3 of Figure 1;
Figure t is a section form of the hinge. y
The form of the invention shown inthe drawings is a preferred form, is understood that modifications in the construction and arrangement of the parts and .in the character of materials used may be adopted without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
In its general aspect the' invention comprises a pair of platesV that are adapted to be disposed in the door and the jamb, at right angles to the vertical surfaces thereof, these plates having on` their inner ends 1ntegral turned up cylindrical portions adapted to be disposed in a suitable bore formed in the body portion of the door and the jamb and through which cylindrical portions fastening means such as nails and screws may be introduced into the Ydoor and the jamb.
The outer ends of these plate portions, which project beyond the body portion ofthe door and the jamb are provided with roller bearing casings in the form of lcupshaped housings which are adapted to receive a roller bearing to permit the two through a modified members of the hinge to freely move with respect to each other with as little friction y as possible.
In the preferred form of the invention shown in the drawings, the hinge comprises a pair of plates 10 and 11 which on their inner endsy are provided with integrally although it anu chisappneann area June s,
turned up cylindrical'portions 12 and 13, the axes of which are parallel to the front surfaces 14 and 15 of the door and the jamb. Suitable fastening means such as screws 16 and 17 may be introduced through the cylindrical portions to hold the plates in position. The main body portions of the plates 1() and 11 are disposed in sawcuts 18 and 19, formed in the surface of the door and the j amb. The outer ends of the platesV are formed as cup-shaped casings or housings 2()y and 21 cooperatively defining a container for a roller bearing unit. The lower housing 21 is provided with an upstruck hub 22 on f which the inner member Q3 of a roller bearing unit is centered. This inner' element of the roller bearing unit is in contact with the upper casing 20. The outer element 24 of the roller bearing unit is in contact with the upper casing 20 and between these two elements are a series of balls 25. A split bayonet pin 26 connects the two cas-ings being passed through central aligned apertures therein to hold them together.
The hinge of Fig. 4t is substantially the same as that described above, except that instead of using the bayonet pin, I have connected the two cup- like housings 20 and 21 by a double headed sectional stud passed through the aligned central apertures in. the housing sections. This stud, designated by the reference character 30 is formed with an integral head-31 at one end, and with a reduced threaded extension 32 at the other end, upon which a second head 33 is removably secured. Y
Therefore, in applying the hinge it is necessary to provide two Vsawcuts in the corners of the door and the jamb andthen to drill Va bore in the edge of each of these members These bores, however, are vnot a pair of hinge plates having cupshaped casings on their outer ends adapted to lie with their open faces abutting each other, a hub formed on the inner 'face of one of said casings, a roller bearing unit comprising an inner and an outer element with intervening balls, the inner element adapted to embrace the hub and bear thereagainst, the outer unit balls, the inner element adapted to embrace adapted to lie Within said casingsand supthe hub and bear thereagainst, the outer unit port the upper casing. adapted to lie Within said casings and Sup- 2. A hinge construction which comprises port the upper easing, 'said casings having 5 :1 pair of hinge plates having cup-shaped aligned apertures and a split bayonet fas- 15 cusings on their outer ends adapted to lie tening pin 'extending between the easings with their open faces abutting each other, a through said apertures to hold the oasings hub formed on the inner face of one of said together. l cesings, a roller bearing unit comprising an i 10 inner and an outer element with intervening ERNEST FLAGG.
