The invention. relates tov an improvement in machines. for printing or embossing. It isespecially applicable to machines for printing or embossing on glass, 0111113, porcelain,
enamelled goods or other frangible articles,
butv it is not limited to machines for printing onarticles of that character. It relates especially to machinesin which the. printing or embossing member is reciprocable and has a. printing surface onwhich a marking or design is imprinted or embossed by a d e in such manner that the printing surface is adapted to imprint or emboss the said des gn on the work, the die and work holder being alternately brought into alinement with the printing member, the printing member belIlfI pressed into engagement with the die which is then ,moved out of position, the, work holder containing the work being then moved into position where the printmgmember imprints or embosses the design on the work.
The present invention relates especially to the means for actuating the work holder. The invention will be understood from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be pointed out and clearly defined 1n the clalms at the close of this specification.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a fragmentary portion of a machine embodying the nvention showing the printing member 111.113 raised position and the die in a position intermediate its most retracted and'its most forward position before it reaches its position under the printingmember, the work holder being in a partially retracted position out from under the printing member. Referring to the drawings, there is shown at 10 a frame or casting to hold the parts, said frame having overhangingarms 11 sup- 5o porting a bearing 12 in which a plunger 13 is vertically reciprocated. ltfounted in guide ways 16 in the frame is a slide 17 on which is mounted a. die 14 on which is formed the design to be imprinted then to move the die and die carrier back to its rearward position again. An inking roll 21 is engaged by the die during its movement. A wiper 22 is provided to re move. the surplus ink from the die.
A work holder 24 is mounted upon a slide 25 which slides in grooved ways 26 in a bracket 27' and is adapted to be reciprocated in'said ways so as to move the work holder into a position directly beneath the printing member and then out from under the printing member. As shownin the drawings the path of movement of the workholder is in a direction at right angles to the path of movement of the die and the, die carrier. It is not necessary, however,that they should have exactly this angular relation, the essential feature being that the work holder. and the die may be alternately positioned beneath the printing member. y
A lever 28 is pivoted at 29 on a vertical axis in. a bracket 30projecting from the frame i of-the machine and extends in a horizontal plane slightly below the plane of the die carrier 17 and the work carrier 25. Said lever 28 has, at its moving end arms 31 and 32 which are respectively adapted to. engage with a downwardly extending projection 38 011 the under-side .ofthe die carrier 17 and with a downwardly extending projection 34 on the under-side of the work carrier 25 When the die carrier is moved forward to 7 osition the die let ben aththe printing memlever 28 on its fulcrum in counterclockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 3 and thus cause the end of the arm 32 which engages with the projection 34 on the under-side of the work carrier to move the work carrier 25 in a rearward direction, that is, away from the printing member. Said arms 31 and 32 are curved on the arc of a circle at the center of which is the pivot 29 so located with relation to the path of movement of the die carrier and the work carrier that the said two arms 31 and 32 will actuate the said carriers to move in straight paths at right an les to each other.
3 spring 35 is provided, one end of which is connected at 36 with the frame of the machine and the other end of which is connected with a member 37 projecting from the work carrier 25. When the work carrier is moved backward from beneath the printing member the said spring 35 will be expanded as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and when the die carrier moves back from under the printing member so that the lever 28 is free to respond to the action of the spring, the spring will contract and cause the lever to swing in a clockwise direction from the position shown in Fig. 3 the spring 35 will move the work holder forward to a position beneath the printing member.
The die carrier will be retracted by the reverse rotation of the shaft 20. The means shown in the drawing for adjusting the range of movement of the plunger 13 consists of ahand vwheel 38 and suitable mechanism engaging withthe worm shaft but the mechanism is not shown in detail as this does not form a part of the invention and any other suitable means may be employed.
The means for operating theplunger to make its upand down stroke in printing is not shown as that forms no part of the present invention.
. Vhat I claim is:
1. A machine of the character described having a vertically reciprocable printing member, a die mounted on a carrier adapted to move the die into and out of alignment with the printing member, a work holder mounted on a carrier adapted to move the work holder into and out of alignment with the printing member, means for reciprocating the die carrier a lever fulcrumed intermediate its ends and having arms which respectively engage with the die carrier and the work carrier whereby when the die carrier is moved in a direction to position the diebeneath the printing member the said lever will be turned on its fulcrum in a direction to move the work carrier away fromthe printing member and means for moving the work carrier to position the work beneath the printing member when the die carrier is retracted.
2. A machine of the character described having a vertically reciprocable printing member, a die mounted on a carrier adapted to move the die into and out of alignment with the printing .member, a workholder mounted on a carrier adapted to move the workholder into and out of alignment with the printing member, means for reciprocatin g the die carrier, a pivoted lever fulcrumed intermediate its ends and having arms which respectively engage with the die carrier and the work carrier whereby when the die carrier is moved in a direction to position the die beneath the printing member the said lever will be turned on its fulcrum in a direction to move the work carrier away from the printing member and means for moving the work carrier to position the work beneath the printing member and to turn the lever backward on its fulcrum to follow up the die carrier when the die carrier is retracted.
A machine of the character described having a vertically reciprocable printing member, a die mounted on a carrier adapted to move the die into and out of alignment with the printing member, a work holder mounted on a carrier adapted to move the work holder into and out of alignment with the printing member, means for reciprocating the die carrier, a pivoted lever fulcrnmed intermediate it-sends having arms which. respectively engage with the die cari rier and the work carrier whereby when the die carrier is moved in a direction to position the die beneath the printing member the said lever will be turned on its fulcrum in a direction to move the work carrier away 1. A machine of the character described having a vertically reciprocable printing member, a die mounted on a reciprocable carrier adapted to move the die into and out of alignment with the printing member, a work holder mounted on a reciprocable carrier adapted to move the work holder into and out of alignment with the printing member, rack and gear mechanism adaptedto reciprocate said die carrier, a pivoted lever having arms which respectively engage the die carrier ancl'the work carrier whereby when the die carrier is moved in a-direction to position the die in operative position with relation to the printing member the said lever will be turned on its fulcrum in a direction to move the work carrier away from the printing member, means for actuating the work carrier to move the Work holder into operative position with relation to the printing member said actuating mechanism for positioning the work carrier being held inoperative while the die is beneath the printing member and becoming operative when the die carrier moves out of alinement with the printing member.
