CAP FOB BOTTLES AND OTHER CONTAINERS.

My invention relates to caps for bottles 2 is a sectional view thereof, taken through and other containers.

The objects of my invention are: first. to rovide a cap of this class which may be 5 ottle or other similar container and which may be readily removed therefrom without the necessity of a bottle opener or other similiar instrument, which openers or other instruments are not always at hand when It! desiring to remove the caps from bottles or other similar containers; second, to provide a cap of this class having means in termediate its edge to permit ready insertion of a. cap prying member thercthrough In for prying the cap from a bottle or other similar container, but which cap is of such construction as to throughly seal the normally open end of the bottle or other container; third. to provide a cap of this class through which any small rigid instrument, such as a knife, fork, nail, piece of wood, or the like, may be inserted for prying off the cap; fourth, to provide a cap of this class havingan opening at its middle portion and 26 a gasket at its inner side and means. such as parafiin or other suitable material, for sealing the openings, but which paraffin or other suitable sealing material may be read ily removed or forced through the opening 80 for inserting a cap prying-off member through the opening for prying off the up from the bottle or other container: fifth, to provide a cap of the class mentioned having means in the form of a label at its outer side for protecting the sealing means over the opening; sixth. to provide as a whole a novelly constructed cap of this class, and

seventh, to provide a cap of this class which is very simple an economical of construction, durable, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.

WVith these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions. as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompan ing drawings and to the characters of re erence thereon. which form a part of this application, in which:

Figure 1 is an enlarged top view of my cap in its preferred form of construction for sealing or capping bottles, certain parts and portions thereto being broken away and in section to facilitate the illustration; Fig.

2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevational view of a bottle, showing my cap secured over the open end thereof.

Like characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.

My cap, as illustrated in the drawings, consists essentially of the on member 1, a gasket 2, a plastic materiai 3, a sealing plastic material 4, and a label 5.

The cap member 1 is made and shaped substantially the same as bottle caps now in common use, the same being made of an inverted. substantially cup-shaped, metallic shell, the depending edge l of which is crimped and adapted to be pressed around the open end of a bottle. The cap member 1 of my construction, however, is provided in the middle portion of the upper plate portion of 1 thereof with an opening 1, the walls forming said opening being preferably rolled inwardly slightly so as to provide a relatively deep opening. On the in side of the cap member or shell 1 is positioned a gasket member 2, preferably of cork or other suitable material, which is preferably secured to the inner side of the plate portion 1" by a plastic or cementing material 3. Faid gasket member 2 extends over the opening 1, as shown best in Fig. 2. In the opening I. is provided sealing material, such as paraflin, indicated by 4 in Fig. 2. This parafiin 4, or other suitable plastic material, is poured in aplastic state over the portion of the gasket member 2 exposed in the opening. Over the outer side of the plate portion 1" of the cap member or shell is adhesively secured a label 5. which covers the paraffin 4 and protects the same from the sun or from being otherwise destroyed or punctured.

In order to remove the cap from the bottle or other container, any suitable instrument such as a knife, fork, nail or piece of wood may be inserted through the label 5. the paraffin or other sealing material 4 and the gasket member 2, and the cap thus pried oif without injuring the bottle or other container in any way.

It is understood, of course, that the label 5 and even the sealing material 4 may be done away with if desired, and the opening 1 may be positioned near the edge of the cap if desired; and though I have otherwise shown and described a particular construc- 1. 2. In a cap for bottles adapted to contain 20 effervescent beverages, a metallic shell having a securing portion at its outer edge and an openin at its middle ortion, a cork sealin gas et member positioned on the inner side of said shell and over said opening, plastic material positioned in said opening over said gasket, and protective means secured over the outer portion of said shell and over said plastic material.
