METAL-PROCESSING MACHINE.
My invention relates to a new and useful metal processing machine, and it relates more particularly to apparatus for clos ng the pores of the metal and for crystallizin the face of metal, and also for sealing an polishing metal surfaces in general.
The object of my invention is a machine of simple and eflicient construction for imparting to metal sheet, bars or other metal products, a rapid succession of blows or impacts whereby the surface as well as the interior of the metal is subjected to a series of rapid compressions so as to make the metal as a whole more dense and also forproducing a better surface upon the face of the metal.
With the above objects in view, my invention consists of a rotatable and substanmember or roll,
tially cylindrical 'anvil mounted upon suitable journal supports and guiding and feeding means, such as pairs of opposed and coacting guide rolls, suitably driven by power means, on either side of the anvil roll, adapted to feed a metal sheet, rod or bar in a continuous manner over the anvil roll, thereby successively to position the successive areas of the metal upon the anvil roll.
My invention'further consists of a rotatable hammer or impact device mounted above and in operative alignment with the anvil roll, having a series of independent and angularly spaced and pivotally mounted hammers or impact devices, adapted to contact with the metal positioned upon the an-- vil roll and to impart thereto the desired impacts or blows, means bein provided to permit of an adjustment '0 the eflective distance between the anvil and impact members. i
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings, forms thereof which are at present preferred by me since they will give in practice, satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various 'i trumentalities of which my invention consis can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentallt'ies as herein shown and described. v

In carryin out my invention I provide any suitable ase 1, on Whichare mounted opposed pairs of upright, parallel frame members or standards 2 and 3, which may be suitably braced by the diagonal brace members 4. Bet-ween each two pairs of upright frame members or standards 2 and 3,
Pairs of fore and aft hearing or journal housings 9 and 10 respectively are also provided, suitably mounted upon the base 1, and having their respective center lines extending parallel to the center line of the journal blocks 5 and 6. Each of the bearing housings 9 and 10 is provided with lower and aligned bearing openings or journal apertures 11 and upper journal blocks 12. The lower journal openings 11 support the lower shafts 13 and 14 respectively, which carry the lower feed and guide rolls 15 and 16 respectively. The upper journal blocks 12 are preferably mounted in direct vertical alignment with the bearing open-.
and are also preferably movably or mounted in the bearing houslngs as to permit of the adjustment of the upper idle rolls 17 and 18 with respect to the corres nding lower or drive rolls 16 and 15. bus each of the upper journal blocks 12 is slidablhmounted in the upright channels 19, in the aring housings in s 11 ad%ustably 9 and 10, is suitably guided bya rod and is maintained under a downward tension by a suitable spring 21, as shown particularly in Figures 1 and 3. Thus the idle rolls 17 and 18, carried by the corresponding shafts 22 and 23, respectively, are forcedor pressed against the drive rolls 15 and 16, with a constant pressure by the springs 21, so as to accommodate materials of varying thicknesses.
The anvil roll 8 and the fore and aft drive rolls 15 and 16 are-interconnected by means of a series of toothed wheels 24, and '26, respectively, preferably of diameters direct.- 1y proportional to the diameters of the corresponding rolls, and an endless link chain 27, extending around the three toothed wheels, and operatively engaging the same, so as to cause the three rolls to revolve in the same direction at substantially the same peripheral speed.
Between the upright standard or frame members 2 and 3, a pair of op osed journal blocks 28 and 29 are adjustahly mounted. by any suitable means, such as the threaded supporting rods 30, threadedly anchored in the upper transverse yokes 31, and the opposed set screws 32.
. By this means (Figures 1 and 2) the journal blocks 28 and 29 are supported in substantial vertical alignment with the corre= spending lower journal blocks 5 and 6, and in a vertically adjustable manner, so as to permit of a variation of the distance between the center line of the journal blocks 5 and 6 and the center line of the journal blocks 28 and 29. The journal blocks 28 and 29 support a shaft 33, upon which is fixedly mounted a hammer roll 34:, having a series of peripherally spaced and parallel longitudinal dove-tailed grooves 35 therein, which are adapted to receive a series of aligned and alternate pivot blocks 36 and spacing blocks 37 respectively. The pivot blocks 36 are provided with the pivot apertures 38 through which suitable pivot rods 39 may i be extended, which are. in turn retained by an'entire row of links all, held in place by any suitable means such as the cotter pins 40.
Each of the shafts 7 and 33 may be provided with fixed pulleys 48 and 49 respectively, or other suitable means adapted to receive a beltor the like, through which ro- I tary motion may be imparted to said shaft 7 at the desired rate.
In Figure 8 I have shown a modified embodiment of my invention, to wit, a hammer block of an extended length, which may be pivoted directly upon the upper pivot rods 39, thereby eliminating the intermediate link 41.
lit will thus be seen that by my invention 1 have devised a metal processing machine, adapted to be employed whenever it is desired to impart to ametal sheet or the like, a successive and uniform series of impacts either for the pur ose of closing the pores on the surface 0 the metal or for solidifying the metal or for crystallizing the same. llt will also be understood that in the specific illustration of my invention shown in the drawings, the various operative elements of the same are shown partly diagrammatically and that my invention is not limited to the detailstherein shown.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a new and useful metal processing machine which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention andthe above description, and while I have in the present instance, shown and described preferred embodiments thereof, which are at present preferred by me since they will give in practice, satisfactory and reliable results, it is to'be understood that such embodiments are susceptible of modification iii-various parparticular mechanicalticulars without departing from the spirit of its advantages. v
Having thus described my invention, what ll claim as new and desire to securevby Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character stated, an
anvil roll, feeding rolls in operative alignment with said. anvil roll, a hammer roll' above and in operative alignment with said anvil roll, having a pluralit of peri heraL ly spaced "lod'itudinal an inwar en'- largedchahne s', a series of pivot locks fixedly secured in said' inwardly enlarged channels,and a corresponding series of hammer blocks pivotally sup rted by said piv- 0t blocks in operative a ignment with said anvil roll. r
2. In a device of the character stated, an anvil roll, metal fee'din rolls in operative alignment with said anvil roll, a hammer roll above and in operative alignment with said anvil roll, sets of aligned and peripherally spaced links pivotally secured to said hammer roll, and corresponding sets of hammer blocks pivotally carried by the free ends of said links, in operative alignment with said anvil roll, said hammer blocks being adapted to impact upon the metal carried by said anvil roll when said hammer roll is revolved.
