Description

June 26, 1928. 1,674,896
M. E. GARN WEED CUTTING ATTACHMENT FOR HARROW TEETH Filed March 29, 1927 Patents June 26, 1928.
WEED-CUTTING ATTACHMENT F03 I-IARROW TEETH.
Application filed March 29, 1927.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be readily attached to the tooth of a harrow and operate in advance of the tooth to cut weeds and obnoxious growths so that the same will be destroyed as the ground is prepared for cultivation. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and consists in certain novel features which will be hereinafter first fully described and then more particularly pointed out in the ap pended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure l is an edge view of my weed outter showing the same attached to a spring harrow tooth;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view, and
Fig. 4 is a detail rear elevation of the clamping block.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 indicates aportion of a spring harrow tooth which is of well known construction. In carrying out the present invention, 1 pro vide a clamping block 2 which is a single integral casting preferably of rectangular form and having a central opening therethrough to receive the shank of the harrow tooth. This opening 3 is of such form as to provide a shallow recess 4 at the upper edge of the clamping block on the front side of the same which will snugly receive the shank of the harrow tooth so that oscillation of the tooth or the block will be prevented. The forward side of the recess 4: is beveled or inclined, as shown at 5 in Fig. 2, so that the harrow tooth may assume its usual operative position and the block will be disposed at the back of the tooth at its upper edge and in front of its tooth at its lower side. The intermediate portion of the opening 3 extends entirely through the clamping block, while the rear wall of the block below the central portion of the opening is beveled or inclined, as shown at 6, to bear against the front side of the harrow tooth and is also formed with downwardly converging shoulders 7 adapted to fit against the side edges of. the tapered end of the tooth so that the tooth will be firmly held. Resting against the front side of the clamping block 2 is a blade 8 which is of greater width than the tooth and the block and has its lower edge beveled, as shown at 9, whereby it is adapted to cut through vines and weeds, and also slightly pointed, as indicated at Serial No. 179,270.
10, whereby it will easily penetrate the surface soil and engage the growths which are to be destroyed. Through the upper corners of the clamping block are formed openings 11 to receive fastening bolts 12 passed through the said openings and the upper corners of the blade 6 whereby the blade will be firmly secured to the block. it is also to be noted that the blade is arcuate in form as viewed from the end so that it will tend to lift and turn aside the surface soil and the vines, weeds and other growths.
'ihe construction and arrangement illustrated and described disposes the cutter'b in advance of the harrow tooth so that it will operate in front of the tooth and, there fore, not only cut through the vines and weeds but will also push them aside so that they cannot become entangled with the harrow teeth. The harrow teeth will, consequently, more effectually scratch the surface of the ground and reduce it to the desired pulverized condition. The device is exceedingly simple and may be readily applied to any harrow tooth and as easily removed when its use is not desired. The device is light so that it will not add appreciably to the draft of the implement.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. An attachment for harrow teeth comprising a weed-cutting and deflecting blade, and a clamping block secured to the back of the blade at the upper edge thereof and having an opening therethrough, the front side of the block being beveled above the opening and the rear side of the block being beveled below the opening whereby to define shallow recesses communicating with the opening to fit closely around a harrow tooth.
2. An attachment for harrow teeth comprising a weed-cutting blade, a clamping block having a central opening therethrough and provided with a shallow recess in its front wall above the opening and communicating therewith and having a shallow recess on its rear wall at the bottom of the opening and communicating therewith whereby'to closely receive a harrow tooth, the rear recess having downwardly converging side shoulders and means for securing the clamping head to the blade whereby the harrow tooth will be clamped between the blade and the head.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
