LnsLIE it, a. cam/Arno,gr' roLnnofonro, 'Asslenon 'ro THE- oLos'URn SERVICE 'COMPANY,"OF TOLEDO, OHIO, rifoonronnrron" or OHIOQ 'cLosun-E DEVICE;
Application med ctober '3, 1925. smain o; 60,1574.
v My invention relates to closures forconr .tZUDGlS such as tumblers, ]ars or 'others1m1-1 l'ar containers, embodyin'gfcertainfeatures or and being in the. natureioi". animprovement.
over the structuresshown;and described in my co-pending application,Se1-ial Number 685,530. i More specifically, my invention relatesto bottle closures of a:type'consistingfof. a top portion and depending. flange porti'onythe latter being formed with .a peripheral-bead.
near its lower extremity and-having a cutaway portlon 1n. the said bead for the intr.o'-.
duction of a suitable prying implement. A
score line has generally been disposed so as to cross this-cut-away portion or slot.
It has been found in practice that when a cap has been-scored so as. to have the score line crossing or bordering thecut-away portion or slot in theflange', much d-ifli'culty has been experienced 1n the sealing operation from tears occurring at: the cut-away' por-v tion and extending along the: scoring. line; Such tears "arising during the sealing opera:-
tion, are very objectionable. Thesegn'egatede portions are weakened and elongaterhby virtue of the" aforesaid tears and are unable: to be properly erimpe-d on the header the:
bottle neck. Furthermore, the cap is obviously lacking in strength from such 'a construction.
An object of my invention is to produce practical and simple means for obviating the above disadvantages in a simple and prac tical manner.
A further object of my invention is to pro-' vide means whereby a cap or closure is kept" from tearing during the sealing operatlon bottle and my improved closure device, and] showing the use of asuitable implement to separate the removable sealing strip. 7
Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevation, partly in section, of my improved device, adapted to another form of bottle.
4 Referring nowlto the-drawings. for a: de-
scription in detail ofmy invention illustrated therein, th ere will he seenacl'osure or cap 5- comprising a top portion 6,and a depending: flange or skirt 7. There is formed: lITl'ihG; 'depending'flangeT, a little above the margin. of said flange, a rib 8rextending circum-- ferentially of the flange; There is further tormed'in the depending flange 7, a slot'lO extending: upward front the lower edge: of the flange to-or through the rib1-8, permittingi the insertionof: asuitable prying; implement 12 under the aforesaid rib 8. The lower margin of thedependi'ng flange orskirt 7 is vterm-ed to extenddownwardly alittle past the rim '13: otthe bottle overlwh-iclrit is to fit and provide a: suflicientl edge. to: allow crimping thecap to the bottle: finish. Above ferentialscore line 11 f0r separating-thesaid the said rib 8'andtthe said slot;10'-,acircumflange into two part'szisformed in the aforetsaid flange 7. gasketl t made of cork or:
other suitable: materi a1, is disposed within the? cover 5; "Figure l, it will be noted, discloses a similar construction, as: above described, but applies the-principlesot my invention: to a bottl'eaotnarrower' neck. In the use of my, invention-,.: thei closure 5, with the gasket 14 inserted therein, :is pl'aced upon-the bottle it is to close, and the lower margin 9is bent under the rim 13 of the bottle neck, thereby crimping the closure of said bottle. I contemplate, in my invention, to dispose the score line 11 across the flange 7 a little above the rib 8 and the slot- 10 therein. With this arrangement, accidental tearing of the flange atthe slot during the above sealing operation, is avoided.
For opening the -'bottle,a suitableimple ment 12' is inserted through the slot 10 under the rib 8, and pressed upwardly, causing a tear of the rib portion of the skirt along the score linell. The amount 15 so torn, affords a gripping 'means for further tearing by hand and thereby completely removing the removable strip or sealing band below the score line, leaving acomplernentary cover 16 for temporary use during the dispensation.
of the contents of the container.
. Modifications of the above, may be made within the spirit and scope of my invention;
VVha-t I claim is:
1. A receptacle closure having a marginal portion adapted to overlie an exterior por tion of a receptacle, said marginal portion ing also provided with a peripheral score line spaced apart'from said peripheral bead and cut-away portion.
3. A bottle closure comprising a top and a skirt portion, said skirt portion having its lower marginal portion provided with sealing and opening means, including a marginal extremity for crimping the said closure to a bottle, and a peripheral score line spaced above a peripheral bead formed in the said skirt, said bead being provided with an aperture therein for the insertion of an opening implement, said aperture being spaced from the score line.
4'. A receptacle closure comprising a top cover portion and a marginal flange, said flange formed with a score line extending lengthwise thereof and also formed with a slot extending upwardly from the lower edge'of the flange and terminating at a point spaced below the score line.
5. A receptacle closure comprising a top:
coverportion and a marginal flange, said flange formed with a score line extending lengthwlse thereof and also formed with a slot extending upwardly from the lower edge of the flange and terminating at a point spaced below the score line, said flange also formed with a circumferential bead beneath the scorevline and into which said slot extends.
6.- A sheet metal closure comprising a top portion and an integral depending flange, said flange being formed with a bead extending circumferentially thereof and also formed with a circumferential score line above the bead, said flange being formed with a slot extending upward from the lower edge of the flange into the bead and having its upper end spaced below the score line.
7. The combination of a container and a closure cap therefor, said cap comprising a top cover portion and a depending flange, said flange being formed with a bead extending circumferentially of the container and providing an annular space between the inner surface of the bead and the surface of the container, said head being cut away at one point in the periphery thereof to provide an opening pern'iitting the insertion of a tool between the bead and the container, said flange being formed with a circumferential score line above the bead and spaced from said opening, said opening being extended downward to the lower edge of vthe flange, said container being formed with an annular shoulder, the lower edge of the flange being inturned beneath said shoulder, whereby the cap is secured to the,
container. r I
