f Anobject of the present inventionjs the vprovision ofga novel reelfor Isupporting the tubenfor lconveyi'ngair to Vthe tires of an automobile and novelnneans for suppl-ying the air from the pump to the reel and tube.
A furtherA object of the .invention is the provision of means for automatically' winding up the air hose or tube on the reel after the same has been used.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel-union for permitting the connection of the air outlet pipe ofthe pump with the rotatable shaft of the hose reel.
Vtith these and other objects in view7 the invention consists in the novel construetion7 arrangement and formation of parts?V as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings7 in which drawings,
Figure l is a longitudinal section through the novel union utilized for connecting the Referring to the drawings in detail,-`
wherein similarreference characters designate corresponding `parts throughout the several views.
A source of compressed air is adapted to have connected thereto a suitable hose 38 whereby the air can be conveniently con-y veyed to the tires to be pumped and in order to retain the hose in a compact condition the novel reel 2l is provided therefor. This reel 21 comprises a casing 33 which is frigidly mounted on any preferred part of the chassis of the automobile and the side walls of the casing 33 rotatablysupport a hollow shaft 34 to which is secured the drum reel proper 35. One end of the hollow shaft 34 is closed by a suitable cap 36, while the opposite ends thereof receive the novel union 37, which will bejhereinafter more fully described for connecting the outlet pipe of the pump with the said hollow shaft 34. The hose 38 is adapted to be wound upon the hub 39 'of the reLel or drum and is adapted to extend over a suitable guide roller 40 carried bythe reel casing 33 and through an opening 41formed in the sleeve or shaft in vone direction.
front; wall thereof. The sides offthehub v3) are arovided'with (fear teeth 43 fortengagementwithgpiuions 44-carried by the op.
.-Iposi'te yterminals of .a sleeve or hollow .shaft 45 which isr'otasta-bly mounted on; a station- .vary transversely lentending.;Sla-aft `46. 'It is .to .be noted at this point that the inner end n of the hose 38 is'conne'cted by means of a 'nipple 47` with the hollow shaft 34 so that end attached to the shaft and t-he other end to the hollow shaft or sleeve 45 and this spring normally tends to wind or turn the It is obvious that when the reel or drum proper 35 is rotated as the hose is wound off of the same, that the sleeve or shaft 45 will be rotated which will place the spring 48 under tension and that as soon as the hose tate the drum in a retrograde direction for automatically winding up the hose. lA stationary ratchet wheel 49 is secured to the rigid shaft 4G yand this ratchet wheel is adapted'to be engaged by a pivotedpawl 50 carried by the rotatable sleeve or shaft 45 and it thus can be seen that this shaft or sleeve will' function similar to an ordinary shade roller. I
The improved union 37 utilized for connecting the stationary air outlet pipe 20 of the pump with the rotatable shaft 34 of the 51 which Yis threaded into engagement with Y the end of the shaft 34 opposite to the end which receives the-cap 36. The outer end .Y
of the nipple 51 has formed thereon a lis released, that the spring will tend to roe flange 52 which is received within a. threaded V engagement with the vflange 52 and suit' able packing 55 can be placed in the cap between the inner wall thereof and the plug vand around the said flange 52 andV nipple 5].. TheV outer end of the plug 54 is'suplported by the air outlet pipe 2O of the pump' and is threaded thereon. It therefore can be seen that air is permitted to flow through the outlet pipe 2O into the bore ofthe plug Y Changes as to details may be made without departing; from the spirit or the scope of this invention, but
W'hat I claim as new is in a hose reel of the Character described, a hollow shaft structure, means for rotatably supporting' the same, a hose reel mounted on said shaft, and comprising a hollow hub through which said shaft extends and dise end plates carried by said hub, gear teeth formed about the periphery of Said end plates, a rigid shaft mounted in parallel relation to said hollow shaft, a Sleeve body mounted upon and having said rigid shaft eXtending through the longitudinal `leadingr tromrthe interior of said hollow shaft, to and through said hub body, for conducting` the fluid from the hollow Shaft to a hose. mounted upon the hub body lsubstantially as and for theI purpose described. ln testimony whereof I'afx my signature.
