This invention relates to railwaycross- In carrying: out my invention which may 7 be used with either single or double track ings, the main object thereof} being to pro vide means for positively preventing" persons 7 unknowingly driving "upon arailway traclr as is often done, causing serious injury and loss of life unless some; definite barrier is in the path of travel of the vehicle. z The ordinary signals are 'sometimesfhidQ den fromview of the' driver and areoften entirely ignored until" he is practically 'upon' the railway track.
My invention contemplates a permanent or temporary barrier of obstruction that will compel a driverto detour'then stop at F railroad track to readjust engine control,
then back through restricted passage shown in diagram, again stop to readjust l'llS engine before proceeding onhighway. Thesestops are to enable him to-s-ee approaching trains. A further objectof'the device '18 to provide means that will prevent a driver taking an absolutely straight' path across a railway crossing. a j r A further ob ect is to provide means whereby wagons are provided {Wlth an auxil iary passage acrossfa railway crossing.
' A further object is tofprovidefor ajsfafety railway crossing where the main 'highwayis disposed angularly withrespe'cttofthe rail way track crossingj and indeed even where them'ain' highway extends parallel with the railwa crossing, Q j
A"-fi1rther object isfto' provide means whereby a driver willbe compelled to stop at railway tracks; thereby previding; an opportunity to see approaching trainsg p 'A fiirtfh'e'r object is to Provide a gateacro'ss V the main highway" that while permanently locked by keyslin possession of highway ofli oial against; ordinary trafiic, wide enough when open per-mitt passage highway eq vigpment'f v H ith these and other objects in view my invention in certain details of construction, arrangement of partsf'and' combinations of elements as will'be hereinafterfdescribedv and pointed out in the drawings forming'a' part Figure 1 is a "plan view showing a'jform V of theinvention wherein a highway or roadway is' arranged tobr'ossa railway crossing at right angles. l I l c Figure 2 is a similarview showing an arrangement where the highway runs generally parallel with the railway track.

Y I 7 again stop to readjust engine to" regain railways, 1 designatesthe railway crossing and 2 the main: highway; the highway is enlargedlaterally as at 3 on opposite sidesofthe railway. the enlargements 'beinggre- I versely arranged on opposite sides of the railway so-ythat these enlargements 3 "are diagonally disposed with respect to each other, and constitute pockets within which the automobile must enter. These pockets reversely arranged and facing; each other and by picket fences 5 disposed alon side therailway track; On the opposite si set to prevent encroachment of stock upon the ared'efined by right angular picket-fences v v the track barb -W116 fence may be disposed r By the arrangement of fences above men tioned' itwill be observed that a driver aps 'proaching from the-highway Will'be compelled to slow down'and -to turn'to theleft control to back through a restricted passage,
highway" and cross the railway orossingi These stops s0 enable him to see approaching train.
Asmallgate 6 is provided for; wagons in the fence adjacent the railway tracks. This .g'atelis for farm wagons and must be opened by the driver thereof. 7 Y
The' first angular fence is extended across the road as at 7 and is provided with a large gate" 8 thatis permanently locked, the keys being in'posses sion of the highway-"authori- $185 this gate 8 howeveris wide enough to 'into the bran'ch road and stop at the fence at the railway track't'oreadjust his engine permit passage of highwayequipment when necessary andis'then' locked again, so that itpractically form's a'constant barrier across 7 the-highway, causing' an approaching driver to slow down anddetour into the road'enlargement or pocket. j I rThearrangement of fence sections on'the other side of therailway is practically the same except there need to be no "duplicate smaller road for fa'rm 'wagons the road'9 and 10 being-usually amplefor g I 105- WVherethe'h1ghway runs parallel with the and" gates 6 this purpose.
railway crossing the arrangement is as shown in Figure 2, the installation ofthe main elements of the device being prac tically the same.
From an inspect-ion of Figure 1 it will be seen that the driver coming along the road from the left in direction of the arrows will be forced to turn to the left due to train is approaching from that direction,
and when he gets into the pocket or en largeinent 3. he can observe to the left for the same manifestation.
;l/V.ith the driver coming'from the opposite directions the conditions will be just the reverse.
The auxiliary wagon road 9 is guarded by gates 6 and 10 on either side of the railwvay, and the driver must leave the wagon to open these gates, thuspresenting an additional element of safety; these gates are just wide enough to permit a farm wagon to pass through. I
It will be apparent from the foregoing that liability of accidents in driving over railway crossings will beminimized by my invention if not entirely eliminated.
The apparatus 'may also be used as a singleunit in a roadway, for preventing speeding and, is not restricted to its use in connection with a railway crossing.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to'be taken asa preferred embodiment ofv the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of theappended claims. r
- Hav ng thus descrlbed my invention, what is claimed is: i a
l. A railroad crossing having in the roadway adjacent the;track a permanent barrier extending entirely across theroadway on opposite sides of the crossing and means deflected. laterally of the roadway whereby to cause a detour and stopping at railroad track, backing and again stopping of the vehicle before entrance again to the roadway. i i
2. A railroad crossing comprising a road- Waycrossing the railway at an angle, said road being provided with an enlargement or pocket having a series of oppositely facng angular fence sections whereby to cause an approaching car to double back before final entrance of the roadway. r
3. The combination with a railway crossing, of a main roadway intersecting the same, pairs of laterally oifset'pockets, con
taining oppositely facing angular fence sections therein and a branch restricted passage between-said fence sections, whereby to cause an approaching vehicle to back to pass through the branch restricted-passages before entering the "main roadway. f. 1
4:. The combination with a railway crossing, of a main roadway intersecting the.
same, a permanent' barrier extending completely acrossthe roadway 'at or near the railway crossing, and lateral pockets or enlargements in advance of said barriers, said enlargements having therein angular fence sections oppositely facing each other to provide a branch passage; of a restricted nature, whereby tocause a'vehicle to stop branch road then merging-with the .main
roadway beyond thel said barriei'. f
6. The combinationwith a railway crossing, of a main roadway intersecting the same, barriers extending entirely. across the main roadway and beyond oneside-thereof, said barriers being disposed on opposite sides of'the crossing, the' barriers'jeach pro Vided with a gate permanently locked, "the roadway expanded laterally adjacentfsaid barriers to form pockets and labyrinthine obstructions in said pockets, whereby: to cause a driver to enter said pockets and double back 7 before 'reentering the main roadway and crossing the railway.
7. An obstruction device for a roadway, comprising a permanent barrierfextending entirely across and laterally beyond both sides thereof, a. lateral enlargement for pocket adjacent one side extension, and restricted passages within said pocketfwhereby to cause a driver. to stop and readjust engine controlto. pass throiighthe restricted passages. a p JEHUD. unn e
