This invention relates to improvements in closure fasteners, and has for one of its principal objects the embodimentin a closure fastener, of means for operating the same by vmeans of a knob or handle, and further means for insuring that the door or other device to which the closure fastener is ap-.
plied will be securely locked, whether it is slammed forcibly or closed more gently.
Another important object of this invention is to provide in a closure fastener, means whereby the latch thereof may be retracted by turning the operating handle in either direction.
Still another and further important object of this invention is the provision, in a closure fastener, of a spring pressed latch bolt operated by a rotatable knob or handle, which bolt, when the door is slammed, will be retracted, but without theforce of such retraction being transferred in any way to the operating handle or its associated parts.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawings and following specification. V
The invention, in a preferred form, is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

As shown in the drawings:
The reference numeral 10 indicates generally a casing for the improved closure fastener of this invention, which casing is substantially cylindrical in form and formed in two half shells, as shown, the same being suitably joined at the rear by screws orthe like, the forward end of the upper shell be ing provided with an integral wedge-shaped projection adapted to fit into a correspond ing angular slot 11 as best shown in ure 2. V
An operating handle 12 is providedfor use on the outside of the door or other'similar element to which the lock is applied, and an inside operating handle 14 is-also provided equipped with a locking device 16 the details of which are made the subject of a companion application. The handles 12 and 14 operate on a square spindle 18.
A latch bolt 20 of the usual cam or wedge shaped end construction is slidably positioned in the casing 10, as best shown in Figure 2, and a detail of this latch bolt being illustrated in Figure 5, and a helical spring 22 is associated with the latch bolt 20, and its rear end abuts against the brace or cross-piece 24; positioned in thecasing 10, whereby the latch 20 will be normally impelled into door locking position as shown in Figures 1 and 2.

tom of the rearwardly extending portion of the latch bolt 20, and this lug co-operates with a corresponding projection 28 forming part of the latch withdrawing element 30, which is best illustrated in Figure 1. This element 30 has formed integral therewith an upstanding lug 32 against which is adapted to abut the end of a helical spring 34:, the other end of "which alsov is positioned against the cross brace 24-, thereby normally forcing the operating member 30 into an outward posit-ion, as illustrated in Figure 2.
The member 30 is formed with a slot 36 extending longitudinally along the rear portion thereof, and at the end of this slot is formed integral pointed extensions 38 adapted to co-operate with corresponding cam faces 40 of a cam element 42 shown in Figure 6, and
which has a square opening extending therethrough' adapted for the reception of the handle shaft 18.
It will be seen that as the shaft 18 is rotated in eitherdirection the cam member 4.0 will operate against the points 38 of the latch withdrawing element 30, forcing the same rearwardly against the tension of the spring 34, and the extension 28 of the member 30 will contact with the lug 26 and the latch bolt 20 thereby withdrawing the latch bolt and permitting opening of the door. On
the other hand, when the dooris closed the camface of the latch 20 will permit of its being pushed inwardly against the tension of the spring 22, but there Will be no corresponding rearward moti'on of the member 30, asthe lug 26 is free to move re'arward'ly Without any corresponding motion of the extension 28 or its associated parts on the latch Withdrawing element 30.

It will be seen that herein is provided a compact and efficient form of lock construction which is simple of operation, economical of manufacture, composed of a minimum of parts, and "therefore not likely to get out of order. In addition the solidity of the component parts tends to durability and insures aggfainstthe effects of long or rough usage.
