This invention relates to joints for veneered panels.
An object of the invention is to provide a construction wherein a plurality of ply wood panels provided with metallic veneers may be connected together in such manner that the outer surfaces of the metallic veneers lie in a single plane, and the joint is rendered strong and neat in appearance. 7:0 Other and further objects of the invention will more clearly appear from the claims 'and description hereinafter following. 7 In the drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view through fragments of panels, and a portion of a supporting wall, showing the invention. Fi ure 2'is a top plan view of fragments of the panels showing interengaging p'ortions'of the veneer. Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective vlew 2 of one of the panels, and Figure 4 is an enlarged perspective View of a co-operating panel, showing the invention in connection therewith.
As shown in the drawings, two panels are provided denoted by the reference characters 5 and 6. The panel 5 comprises a plurality of layers of wood, commonly called ply ,wood, and secured to the outer surface of ,the panel is a thin steel veneer 7 in the form .of a steel sheet, and interposed between the steel sheet and the layers of the ply wood is a fabric sheett8, all of these parts being secured together in a manner corresponding to that shown in Reissue Patent No. 14,349, granted to R. ,VV. Burnett, September 11, 1917, wherein the fabric 8 has the function of compensating for the different rates of expansion and contraction of the ply wood and the sheet steel. The veneer 7 adjacent the edge 9 of the panel 5 is off-set inwardly as indicated at 10, approximately the thickness of the steel sheet 7, and is provided with an extension 11 which projects a suitable disf tance outwardly beyond the edge 9 of the panel 5. v The panel 6 includes layers of, ply wood, a layer of fabric, and-a sheet steel veneer in the same manner as the panel 5, and similar reference characters will be utilized to designa'te like parts of each. The sheet steel veneer 7 of the panel 6 lies in a flatplane throughout its extent and beneath the edge portion 12 of the sheet 7 the wood of the panel 6 i's'cut out as indicated at 13, in such manner that the edge portion or extension 2. to a point where the off-set 15 in the steel sheet 7 of the panel 5 is located. Securing elements indicated at 16 extend through the inter-engaged portions of the steel sheets of the panels 5 and 6, and extend through the ply wood into a support 17. The small trough which occurs between the off-set 10 and the edge 14 of the steel sheet 7 on the panel 6 is filled with solder indicated at 18 whereby the outer surface of the two panels 5 and 6 is rendered entirely smooth and flat, and the joint concealed from view, as well as being sealed against the entrance of moisture, the presence of the fabric.layer preventing any strain being placed on' the joint which might occur due to the-different rates of expansion and contraction of the wood and metal layers.
' By this construction a strong fiat joint is obtained between the edges of the two sheets which may be locked in position by the same securing elements which are utilized to secure the panels in position on thesupport 17, the joint being sealed and rendered moisture proof by the solder disposed in the small trough formed at the off-set and adjacent edge of the steel sheets of the two panels.
While I have herein shown and described what I considerthe preferred manner of carrying out the invention, the same is'me1'e ly illustrative, and I contemplate all changes and modifications which come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
1. In a structure of the character described, the combination with a plurality of panels disposed edge to edge, each having a metallic veneer secured thereto, the'veneer of one panel terminating at the edge'thcrew of, in a plane common with the remainder of said veneer, and the body portion of'said panel being provided with a cut-out forming with the veneer a groove and the other of said panels having an integral ofi-set extension on the veneer thereof disposed in said groove, whereby the exposed surfaces of the venebrs on the panels are disposed in a common plane.

3. In a structure of the character described, the combination with a plurality of panels disposed edge to edge, each of which is provided with a veneer glued thereto, the veneer on one of said panels being oil-set a distance corresponding to the thickness of the veneer, and the veneer on the other panel disposed in the same plane throughout and overlapping the offset-portion of said first veneer, whereby the exterior surfaces of said veneers lie in a common plane.
4. In a structure of the character described, the combination with a support; of
metallic veneer, the veneer on one of said panels. overlapping the adjacent edge of the veneer on the other panel, one of said veneers being oil-set to dispose the outer surfaces of the veneers in a common plane, and securing means extending throu h the overlapped portions of said veneers t rough said panels and into said support.
5. In a structure of the character described, the combination with a plurality of panels,-each including a metallic veneer,
and a. sheet of fabricinterposed between the veneer of each of said panels, and the panel to which it is attached, the veneer of one of said panels being off-set and overlapped with reference to the veneer on the other of said panels whereby the outer surfaces of said veneers are disposed in a common plane.
6. In a structure of the character described, the combination with a plurality of panels, each including a metallic veneer, and
a sheet of fabric interposed between the veneer of each of said panels, and the panel to which it is attached, the veneer of one of said panels being oil-set and overlapped rigidly securing said panels together and to.
said support.
7. In a structure of the character described, the combination with a body portion having a plurality of metallic sheets secured thereto forming a veneer for said body portion, the adjacent edge portions of said sheets being flat and overlapped and the edge portion of one of said sheets being oil'- set to one side ofthe plane defined by the.
body portions of-said sheets and the edge portion of another sheet fitting into said off-set whereby said second mentioned edge portion is dis osed in a plane common with the-plane de ned by the body portions of said sheets,-said body portion being cut out and forming :with the veneer a groove for the reception of said offset portion.
8. A metallic veneer comprising a pinvrality of metallic sheets having overlapping edges, one of the edges of one sheet being offset to one side of the plane defined by the body portion of said sheet a distance corre sponding to one thickness of, said veneer, and the edge of another sheet ,of the same thickness fitting into and overlapping said oil-set whereby said last mentioned edge portion is disposed in a plane common with the plane defined by the body portions of said sheets.
9. In a joint for veneered, panels,the com- I secured thereto, the veneer of one panel ter:
minating at the edge thereof in a plane common with the remainder of said anel, and the body portion of said panel icing provided with a cut-out f0 a. groove, and the veneer of the other of said anels having. a rojecting tongue in a plane para lel with the veneer and arranged in line with and extending into saidrgroove of the first mentioned panel, for securing said panels together in edge relation in the same plane.
