UNITED STATES LD ANA H. BENJAMIN, OF CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE 'AMERICAN `LAUNDRY MACHINERY COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
PnEssING AND InoNiNG MAGHINE.
y p Application led June. 28, 1926. Serial No. 119,086.
This invention relates to pressing and ironing-machines of the class used in laundries and. more particularly to the type of such machines having power means for effectin'g pressure between the ironing members after they have been brought into engagement with each other by hand.
The ultimate object of the invention is to provide an eilicient and powerful means for compressing the objects to be ironed between the pressing members, and at the same time to provide for safety in operation of the machine by making it impossible for the e pressing powe'r to be appliedV until the press- Iing members are in-'contact and therefore until the operator is safely clear of the members.
To accomplish these objects I provide a pressing machine in, which the movable pressing member is closed u on its co-oper ating fixed member by han and in which by the mechanism employed it is impossible for the power to be applied to the movable pressing member until it has been so positioned by hand; and since any portion of the operators body would prevent s'uch contact, it would be impossible'to injure the operator between the pressin members. The mechanism employed inclu es a toggle arrangement through which the power must be applied to the pressing members, straightening of the toggle being accomplished by closing the press, the toggle being incapable of transmitting power except in such straightened position.
Further objects, details and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1. is a side elevation of a' pressing machine exemplifying my invention, parts bein'g broken away to show construction; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section in the plane of line 2 2 of Fig. '3; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section in the plane of line 3 3, Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 4 is a detail section in the plane of line 4 4, Fig. 3.
Referring now Fig. 1 the principal parte of the press' machine are the base or frame 1 upon which is fixed the padded buck 2 and movably mounted the heated ironing member 5 adapted to co-operate with the buck 2 to constitute the part of the pressing members between which articlesto be pressed or ironed, are compressed. The
ironing member is carried by an arm 4 pivi oted at 4a upon the extension 1a of the frame of the machine for movement to open or close the press.
Secured upon the arm 4' at the pivot 7a and adjustable with the arm by means of the handle on the screw 12 in the threaded web 11 of the arm, is a member 7 provided with a depending arm as shown. Upon the rear end of the arm 4 is a weight 6. It will be seen that the arm 4 carrying the ironing member 5 the counterweight 6 and the member 7 comprises a unit movable about the pivot point 4a of the arm.
A handle 13 is provided for conyenient hand operation of this unity to close the press; and to the depending arm of the member 7 is operatively secured power means for applying pressure to the ironing member in closed position of the press as will be described. v
Upon the base of the press is a motor 14 connected through the coupler 17 to drive through a gear reduction indicated generally by the reference numeral 18 a shaft 19 on which is mounted a plate carrying the crank pin 20 which may be provided with a roller as shown. Pivotally mounted at 21 is a pressure lever 22 the lower arm of which is provided with a slot in which the crank pin 20 projects so that oscillation of the lever V22 would result from continuous rotation of shaft 19. To a laterally extending arm on the lever 22 at the point 23 is con.- nected the link 24 which in turn is connected through the pair of links 25 to the member ,7 at the point 9, arrangement of the links 24 and 25 being obviously that of a toggle. Pivotally mounted at 27 is a hook shaped member 28 provided with a cam surface 29 adapted by suitable rotation of the hook to engage an extension such as the roller 26 at the joint of the toggle referred to. A link 30 extending between the'hook and the upper extremity of the lever 22 imparts motion to the hook upon movement of the lever in a manner to be described.
Operation of the linkage and mechanism referred to in connection with that of the press is as follows: Commencing with 'the press in open position as shown. in full lines Fig. 1, after the operator has laid the article to be pressed upon the buck 2 the press 1s closed by grasping the handle 13 and pull- 13 be now released theweight of the toggle members would break the toggle joint and owing to the balancing of the parts about the axis -4a the press would open.
Holding the press closed, the operator by means of the handle 31 acting through suitable linkage shown, b-ut forming no part of this invention, effects contact of switch 32 to start the motorl which is arranged to cause rotation of the shaft 19 in the direction-indicated by the arrows, Figs. 1 and 2. This actuation of the motor will be automatically interrupted upon a rotation of shaft 19 from the position indicated in Fig. 1 to that indicated in Fig. 2 by a time switch forming no part of this invention but indicated generally by the reference numeral 33. Upon linitiation of this movement the hook 28l is swung to beneath the roller 26 to lock the toggle joint, after which the handle 13 may be released. Continued movement of the shaft 19 with the pin 2O will cause the cam surface upon the hook to act through the roller to further straighten the toggle joint and thus apply pressure to the member 7 to compress the article between the pressing members. As the lever 22 continues to move the pivot 23 is forced upward to produce further pressure, the short rearwardly extending arm 34 of the lever 22 forming a third toggle member, and with the link 24 a second toggle joint at 23.
After suflicient pressing time has elapsed, the handle 31 is moved to restart the motor 14 in the same direction, rotation of the motor being automatically interrupted by the timing switch 33 as before, upon return of the crank pin 2() toits original position in Fig. 1. During this rotation the hook 28' is removed from the toggle joint which owing to the weightand position of the links 24 and 25 is broken, allowing the press to open to its original open position.
