WALL-PAPER-REMOVING APPARATUS.
Application filed October 19,1927. Serial No. 227,148.
This invention relates to the removal ofwall paper from walls preparatory to repapering of the walls, or the removal of kalsomine and similar coatings fromv walls.
The objects of my invention are to provide apparatus by which old wall paper or kalsomine may be quickly and thoroughly removed with minimum of labor cost.
The removal of old wall paper is a very laborious job, costing in fact more than the work of applying new paper. Also the removal of old'kalsomine requires a great deal of manual labor and the slopping of water all over the place.
With my apparatus herein described one man can accomplish as much work as several men by the old water and scraping process, and also do much better work as the old material comes away from the wall so easily that all danger of gouging the walls is over come.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my wall paper removing apparatus as arranged ready for work, and. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sect-ion through the same.
Briefly described my apparatus Comprises a special chamber adapted to be placed open side against the wall and of a steam hose cdnnecting the chamber with a source of steam such as a steam radiator in the building being worked on, and whereby the wall may be steamed for any desired length of against, and moving it from place to place as the paper is softened and loosened.
Other features of'my apparatus above described provide for removal of condensed water, and a scraping edge is provided so that the softened paper may easily be removed thereby.
In the drawings 1 is the steaming chamber comprising a light sheet metal box provided with a heat insulating handle 2 at the rear side. The box is open in front and provided with a laterally extending flange 3 around the face of the box adapted to seat against the wall and sometimes fitted with a rubber or pther soft edging as at 4 to form a better sea Across the open face of the box is a piece 7 oif this material, as it of wire mesh 5, and extending upward through the lower side of the box is a pipe connection 6 adapted for connection to a steam hose 7, a valve 8 being positioned on the line adjacent the box so that an operator can control or shut oil the steam at will.
/Vithin the box are preferably arranged a few slanted louvers as at 9, while at one corner is an outlet drain connection 10 adapted for connection to a small hose 11- extending to the floor and emptying into a suitable receptacle as at 12. The upper end of the box is fitted with an adjustable scraper or plow 13 secured in place by means of thumb-screws 14 extending through slots 15 in the base of the plow, so that the cutting edge can be adjusted to and from the wall as. may be desired.
In operationthe hose 7 is'connected to a source of steam such as a steam radiator 16 in a building, and the chamber 1 is pressed against the wall and moved from place to placewith valve openedto the required ex tent.
Condensation is conveyed rearward by the louvers and the water discharged through hosell. f
V The paper comes away freely from the wall with little scraping, frequently falling 1 offin large pieces, and the screen 5 prevents so the interior of the device from becoming choked with loosened material.
For refractory wall coatings such as varnished or painted wall papers, it is merely necessary to give the device plenty of steam s5 and-hold it in place a trifle longer when all will be loosened, and for the removal of old kalsomine its operationis a revelation .to all who have laboriously scrubbed and scraped literally dissolves and runs oif. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim: b
' 1. Apparatus of the character described comprising an open sided box forming a steaming chamber adapted for positioning the open side against a wall for steaming the same, a handle on the chamber, and a steam line connection to the same," said chamber provided with a wall scraping edge mounted on the upper end of the box opera tive against the Wall above and outside of the box. 7
2. Apparatus of the character described 5 comprislngan open sided box forming a steaming chamber adapted for positioning the open side against a Wall for steaming the same, a handle on the chamber, and a steam line connection to the same, said chamber provided with a flange around its open 10 side and a Wall scraping edge positioned outside of the box overlying said flange and provided Withmeans whereby it is adjustable to and from the Wall.
