Application filed July so, 1927. Serial no. 209,571.
- This invention relates to condiment holders and comprises essentially a container having a. plurality of'vertical partition walls arranged therein, whereby to f0rm a' plurality of separate compartments withln the same, each of said compartments communieating with a common discharge opening with a closure device arranged to normally close communication between each of the W compartments and the discharge opening, each of said closure devices, having separate actuating means for selectively permitting the discharge of the material from either of said compartments.
An object of the invention is to provide 1 an article of this character which is of simple and practical construction, neat, and attractive in appearance, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction, combination and arrangement of the various elements forming the invention as more fully'hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein:
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the container showing certain of the buttons for actuating the closure device for the compartment. i
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough. a
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken along a line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a bottom lan view.
Referring now to t e drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, 1
provide a "condiment holder comprising a' container indicated generally at 5', which may be of any suitable shape or construction, and having a neck 6 formed at its upper end adapted tothreadedly. receive a threaded cap 1 7 having the usual perforations formed therein through which the material within the condiment container may be discharged. With the body of the container, I arrange a plurality'of vertically extending partitions 8, adapted to separate the interior of the container into a series of com artments, the presentembodiment of the invention indi eating the manner in which the container may be divided into four of such compart- 'ments, although it is to be'understood that any number of such compartments may be formed within the container as desired.
An opening is formed in. the base of the container, communicating with each of the compartments, each opening being provided with a plug 9 adapted to retain the material within the compartment after filling the same through said opening.
In the upper end of the container, I arrange a transverse partition 10, forming a closure for the upper end of each compartment, openings 11 being formed in said transversepartitions communicating with each compartment, and through whichis inserted an arcuate-shaped stem 12, having a plate 13 formed at one end and adapted to seat over the opening on the inside of each compartment, with the opposite end ofsaid stem extending laterally through the base section 14 of a recess 15, formed in the side of the container.
The outer end of the stem carries a button 16, adapted to retain a coiled spring 17 about the stem-within the recess, the expansiblenature of said springserving to force the button outwardly of the recess, so as to protrude beyond the side of the container, and thus normally retaining the plate 13 in closed position with respect to the opening 11.
In this manner, each of the openings 11 communicating from the compartments to thedischarge end of the container, will be normally retained in closed position to pre-' vent the discharge of material therefrom, and upon depressing of the button 16 inwardly, the opening in the associated compartments will be relieved of contact with Y X the plate, thereby permitting the discharge of material therefrom.
' Each of the buttons 16, may carry suitable printed .matter thereon as indicated at 18 in Fig. 1, whereby to indicate the particular character of the material contained .inthe compartment associated therewith, and the under side; of the base oi the container, may likewise be provided with suitable printed matter, as indicated at 19 in Fig. 4,
to also designate the character of the material contained within the compartment, immediately thereabove.
The device may be constructed of a an suitable material such as glass, silver, gol
aluminum or other metal, and may be worked into any desirable ornamental def sign. It is obvious that the invention is susceptible to various changes and modifications without 1 departing from the spirit thereof, or the scope of the appended claim and I accordingly claim all such forms of the device to which I am entitled.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is In acondiment holder, a container having :a plurality of vertical partitions arranged therein and-forming separate compartments within the same, said partitions terminating short of the top of the containerand connected by a transverse partition forming a central chamber in the upper end thereof, the upper end of the chamber constituting v a discharge neck and the base of the chamber having openings communicating with the rewithin each compartment and adapted to close the opening therein, a stem attached to the plate and extending through the opening laterally from the adjacent side of the container, the plate end of the stem being curved downwardly, for insertion in the opening, said container having recesses formed in the sides thereof at the point at which each stem extends, a button carried on the outer end of each stem and a coil spring retained in each recess by the button and adapted to yieldablyforce the plate in closed position. j
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature( WILLIE T. WILLIAMS.
