Description

June 19, 19 28.
E. KNESS PRUNING SAW Filed Jan. 15, 1926 Patented-June 19, 1928.
UNITED TAT Es PATENT oiFFrc E.
Aus rm nnos KNESS, or UDUBON,- IOWA.
I Application filedJanuary' 15, 1926, war 8 1449 This invention relates to pruning saws, and has more particular reference to the mounting structure for the saw blade per se.
' The -primary object, of the invention is to 6 provide a pruning saw wherein the blade per, se is maintained duringthe pruning operation in an absolutely taut manner and whereby the blade may be readily adjusted to cut at several angles, orin a circle in tirely fromithe tree.
With the foregoingiand other objects in: view .as thenature of the invention will be betterunderstood the same comprises the novel 'form, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described,
shownin the accompanying drawing and claimed. I v
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1' is aside elevation of a pruning saw constructed in accordance with the present invention. a
Figure 2'is an enlargedfragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in cross section for more clearly disclosing the main features of the saw blade mount, showing the position of the rod when'the blade is to'be adjusted to any desired angle, and
Figure 3 is a detail vertical section taken substantially upon the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary detail of the rod' showing the octagonal portion being slightly larger in cross section than the threaded portion, and
Figure 5 isan enlarged fragmentary detail of the swivel connection.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, my novel invention constitutes the provision of a. handle 5 of suitable length upon one end of which is secured one end of a how 6 of hickory or, other strong but flexible material.
Upon the same end of the handle 5 beneath the end of the how 6 attached thereto is a pair of longitudinally spaced L-shaped brackets 7-7, the pendent leg of the foremost one of which is provided with a relatively wide vertical slot 8 within which "is slidably secured a nut-like guide block 9'pro- Vided centrally with an octagon shaped opening '10. The pendent portion of the other L-shaped bracket .7 fis provided with a circular opening in registration with the center of the slot 8 in the foremost bracket/"7. Slidable through the octagon shaped opening 10 of the nut-like block 9 and the circular opening in the bracket 7. is a rod;
11 of unthreaded octagon shape 12 at its inner end and circular at its outer end, said circular portion being threaded vas at 13 upon which is arranged a nut 14 upon the.
outer side of the bracket 7. As is clearly shown in Figure 1, the octagonal portion 12 is larger in cross section than the threaded portion 13. Y 1
To the inner end ofthe rod 11 is secured one end of'a pruning saw blade 15, the opposite end of which is swivelly connected to the forward vend of the flexible bow 6 as in dicated at 16'in Figures 1 and 5.
Pivoted to the handle 5 adjacent itslowe-r end is a hand lever 17 to which is pivotally secured rearwardly of its pivotal connection with the handle a link 18, the forward end of which is pivotally connected to a bracket 19. Slidablysecured to this bracket l9at one end is a wire rod QO-that'is in turn connected at its forward end to the bar 11 as at 21. This rod 20 is provided with a looped portion 22 adjacent its lower end to facilitate the turning of the same after the away from the handle 5 which' consequently throws the link 18 downwardly beneath the pivotal. connection between said lever and the handle 5, and thus positioning the inner end of the rod 20 beneath the'handle 5 in such; a manner as to permit of the turning oftherod. v
In actual use, the elements are positioned as shown: in, Figure 1. .I- Iowever, should it be desired to extend the cuttingteeth 15 of the blade 15 to any one of the permissible positions with respect to the handle and mount, the lever 17 is swung downwardly from the handle 5 and due to the flexibility of the bow 6 the circular threaded portion of the bar 11 will pass'int-o the octagon opening of the block 9 for positioning the circular threaded portion of the bar 11 within the octagon opening of the block 9. The rod 20 may then be turned'for positioning the blade 15 at the desired angle and maintained' at this angle" by reversely swinging the lever 17 which will pull upon the rod 20 and bar 11 causing the octagon portion to pass into the octagon openin of theblock 9.
It will thus be seen that have provided a highly novel, simple, and efficient means per se may be extended wherein the blade y at various angles with -respecttothe mount thus permitting of the proper pruning operation.
Minor changes may be made in the invention I without departing from i the "spirit or scope of the appended claims.
" effecting the rotation of said rod and said saw blade when the rod is in one posit on:
' a handle, a
