UNITED STATES P ATENT' OFFICE.
GEORGE J. NETTER, SR., OF INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI.
LOOSE-LEAF BOOK.
Application filed July 2,
ferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 1s a perspective view of a note book binder, filled, and in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a binder in open position.
Fig. 3 shows the back member and the cover member separated, and fragmentarily.
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section of the de vice on the line ir-4:, Fig. 5.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal section on the line 55, Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a note book binder such as fully illustrated in Fig. 2, designed to hold sheets 2, and comprising a back or back cover member 3 and a front cover 4 fixed to a hinge member 5. The means of associating the cover or hinge with the back represents important features of my invention.
The back 3 is preferably constructed of metal, binding posts 6 being upstruck adja cent one end and formed as indicated by 7 and particularly illustrated in Fig. 4, to provide cylindrical pins or posts to receive the sheets 2, which may be the usual type of perforated sheets of a note book, or printed pages, or any objects for which a binder or support may be desired. Ears or flanges 8 are provided for in the metal sheet from which the back is made, and upturned from the back, so that they preferably stand in alignment with the edges of the back memher, and are provided with hearing or journal openings 9, and with externally produced latch-receiving recesses or sockets 10. The back 3 is also upturned in curved form at its end to provide an arcuate sleeve or channel portion 11, the flanges being conformed in outline to the curvature of the channel portion. The openings 9, sockets 10 and curved end 11 are adapted for cooperation with the hinge member 5, which is also preferably made of metal, having downturned cars 12 in which journal members 13 are provided either as separate mem- 1927. Serial No. 203,187.
bers or as bosses, the latching bosses 14, and the curved portion 15, The journals 13 are adapted to tit into the journal openings of the flanges of the back member 3, 'to pivot the hingemember to the back, and may consist of eyelets having hubs for hinging. The latching bosses are positioned to engage in the recesses 10 to latch the hinge member in closed position. The curved portion 15 of the hinge member is adapted to engage and slide over the. curved portion of the back, to provide supporting and strengthening factors thereby, to eliminate rough corners, and to improve the'appearance of the device.
Another particular feature of the device resides in a flexible cover member 16, of leather or composition material, secured to the hinge member by means such as tangs 17 instruck from the hinge member.
The hinge member is also a retaining member, which is swung away from the back to permit insertion of leaves, and is swung and latched in closed position to retain the leaves. The hinge member extends over the posts 6, and contacts with them when it is in closed position. The flexible cover may then be raised, for disclosing the leaves of the book, without disturbing the retaining member, the process being simpler and more convenient than the opening of a hinged cover. The leaves are held firmly by the posts and retaining member in established relation to each other and to the back, and a small number of leaves may be securely retained.
The resilient flanges and resilient ears provide effective latching means, easily 0perated, substantial and not likely to get out of order.
A sturdy binding or cover device is therefore produced, having few parts, not subject to disrepair, easily operated and efficiently retaining the contents for convenient access. The device may be applied to other purposes than that of a loose leaf note book, with which the structure is here preferably illustrated.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
