Description

June l2, 1928. 1,673,657
w. F. J. woLTJEs COMBINATION TENT CONS TRUCTION' Filed June 2, 19 heetsheet 2 INVENTOR.
Patented June 12, 1928.
UNlTED STATES WILLIAM F. J. WOLTJES, OF LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
CQMBINATXON TENT CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed June 2,
This invention relates to a tent.
It is aimed to provide a novelconstruction capable ot various uses such as enabling the human body to be concealed from observation while being subjected to the action of the suns rays, as a store or the like along a highway or as a. shelter for an automobile.
One particular object is to provide a structure which may be readily assembled and disassembled and folded into compact form to facilitate transportation.
A further object is to provide a novel tent in which the sides may be elevated or lifted it desired, at least. two sides, and the tent be rigidified and held in such a manner that it cannot be readily blown down.
Various additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view showing the tent used tor sleeping purposes;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing thc tent with two sides thereot raised to primarily provide a place oit shade;
Figure 3 is an elevation et one of the tent poles;
Figure 4 is a vert-ical sectional view through one of the tent poles, with the sections thereof parted;
Figures and 6 are elevations oit connecting poles used for the sides and which views are taken at right angle to each other;
Figure 7 is a detail view of' the means for securing the extended wall supporting rods to the sustaining poles.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the tent may be made ot any desired size, and ot any appropriate shape, for instance substantially square as in Figure l.
At the corners and between the corners, it desired, poles 1t) of an appropriate construction are used. Such poles may be of wood or metal as pret'erred` and preferably are in sections l1 and 12 adapted 'for detachable connection as by means of a socket 13 carried by the sections lil which telescopically and frictionally receive a tenon or projection 14 of the other section. The sections 1l serve as anchor sections and may be driven into the ground to which end their lower extremities l5 are sharpened as shown.
The vertical walls of the tent are each 1927.. Serial N0. l198(209.
preferably ot a size to cover the s )ace between two adjacent poles l0, such walls being for instance oit canvas and illustrated as at 1G. The canvas ot the side walls 16 may be plain or ornamented and supported by engaging hooks 2l screwed into the sections l2 ot the poles.
In order to appropriately brace the structure, brac-e members 21 are used which may be wires, cords. chainsv` or the like which are attached at their upper ends to screw eyes 22 fastened into the sections Al2 above the hooks 2l and which at their lower ends carry anchors Q3 adapted to be driven into the ground.
The walls lG are preferably at two sides adapted to be lifted, as suggested in Figure 2, suoli walls may carry at their upper and lower marginal edges, rods Q4 connected to such walls by hooks or the like 25 and having attaching elements E2G at their ends consisting ot plates provided with eyelets 2T adapted to engage hooks 2l screwed to adjacent poles 10. The plates 26 occupy a bifurcation in the ends oil the rods 24 and fastened therein by bolts or rivets as at 29.
The device may be used without any root whatever thus a person may be enclosed thereby even in the nude, so as to be subjected to the benefit ot the suns rays in the tratmcnt ot certain diseases or ailments, and within the tent, the patient may have dcsirable appurtenances such as a chair, cot, or the like.
Stops Sel are provided on poles l() and are in the term ot contractile rubber rings or collars which siiirround and grip the sections l2 above the eyelets 22 and are adjustable longitudinally of such sections.
A water-proof cover 37 is provided and is preferably ot water-proof canvas or the equivalent and at its corners is provided with eyelets 39 adapted to engage the poles lO and to be sustained in elevated position by stops 34.
The device when disassembled may be rolled or packed in relatively compact form and form but a small bundle or bundles so as to he readily porta-ble.
It is to be understood that the tent or combition may be used generally as a knock down and portable structure. A particular advantage ot the adjustability ot rings 34 is that certain of them, for instance those at one side et a tent may be arranged higher said elements consisting of (,'outraetile hands.
2. A tent having poles, hooks on said poles, walls suspended on said hooks, means to connect the Walls to each other, eyelets on said poles above the hooks, brace means attachable to the eyelets, a roof havingr openings through which the poles extend, and longitudinally adjustable elements on the poles to determine the position of the roof. 20
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
