Application filed-August 26, 1926. Serial No."131;612.
My invention relates to an improvement in spark" plugs, theinvention being more particularly related to an improved electrode construction especially designed for use as a repair attachmentfor spark plugs,
although it, is to be understood that my invention is not "confined to such use since the improved electrode constructioncan be made.
as a component partiofjthe spark plug in the first instance.
It is within the province of my invention to provide an electrode construction capable of being quickly and conveniently applied to the central electrode of a customary type of spark plug embodying a conducting shell insulatively' carrying v a central electrode;
and further to provide the electrode con struction with an extending part which will occupy a position continuous in proximity with the periphery of the conducting shell sothat sparks will be produced in a continuous intervening spark gap to lnsure a more complete burning of the gas mixture in proximity to the end 16of the conducting shell so as to produce a continuous spark gap therewith, and the result of this ar- 1 in the cylinder. Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which, w
Fig. 1 represents a side elevational view of a spark plug equipped with my improved electrode construction; 1 V
Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section of Fig.1; t
Fig. 3 representsa bottom plan view of Fig. 1, this view being taken on theline 33 of 2; and v y Fig. 4 represents an enlarged perspective view of my electrode construction. With more particular reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustrating a practical application of my invention, I have shown a spark plug 5 of ordinary construction, the same including an outer conducting shell 6 and a central electrode 7 which is insula-tively supported therein through the instrumentality of a porcelain center piece 8 and a locking sleeve 9.
My invention, in its preferred form of construction as illustrated in the accompany.
comprises an attachment which be applied to the free end of ing drawing, is adapted to i be better understood, that in addition to the .7. Inasmuch as this angular. electrode as usually arranged, interferes with the appliend 16 of the conducting shell; and in Fig. 2
the electrode 7 which for this" purpose,y
is madefwith a medialsleeve 10slit. longi tudinally as at v ll in order to. have atight i blndlng grip onthe central electrode? when applied thereon. rom whatI term the outer end orportion12 ofthis sleeve, an extending. portion 13 extends outwardly from anfiedge: of the stockwhere the slitll occurs, and supports a circular or encircling part 14 which stands apart from the end of the slee ve, the extremity 15 of the circular or encircling part 14 preferably terminating,
as best shown in Figs. .3 and 1, in spaced apart relation tothe outwardly extending, part 13 where it merges into the encircling part 14. Preferably and as shown the encircling part. lt is held spaced from the sleeve 10 at such distance that it will occupy i a position opposite the end 16 of the conducting shell 6 when the sleeve 10 is applied to the central electrode? as best shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. By this arrangement, the Q I encirclin g partll is supported continuously rangernent isthata field of electrical discharges or sparks willtakeplace between the the end ;16 of the conducting shell whenever through the employmentof the usual timing device the electrical current is permitted tov i flow'through the central electrode 7.
a It is to be remarked here, in order that the mode of applying my attachment" may cation'of my improved electrode construction to the end of the central electrode 7,3it is necessary to removethat portion of the an-, gular electrode which protrudes from the of the accompanying drawlnglhave shown at 18 the embedded partor stub of an angular electrode sheared off. even with the end 16 so as to enable the application of the sleeve 10 to the central electrodel.
s From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it will be apparent inner edge 17 of the encircling part 'l l-and' that I have provided a very simple and inexpensive electrode construction, capable of being manufactured as a repair attachment which can be quickly and conveniently fixed on the central electrode when the spark plug fails to function properly owing to any impairment of its electrodes, and which when applied will serve as means for insuringa more effective burning of the gas mixture in the cylinder.. It will be obvious that, if de-- sired, the electrode construction of this in-- vention may bemade as'a component part of the central electrode in thefirst instance.
While I haveillustrated and described the preferred form of construction for'carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation andl modification without de'-- parting from the spirit of the invention;- I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
MARTIN SANDERS.
