The arm 5 is pivoted on'a fixed rod or shaft 8 and the'cop-holder spindle 4 is hinged at 9 to the outer end of an extension l0 projecting forwardly from the arm. The arm 5 is provided 'with' a vertical eX- tension'or flange 14 carrying a weight 15 bolted to its side and acting to'app'ly pressure to maintain the co'p 0r package bearing against the drive-roll 3 to vinsure the proper rictional driving contact therewith. The arm 5 also has a downwardly extending flange 16 inthe form of a quadrant disposed lar rim ot the quadrant 16 is grooved to receive a hardened steel ratchet 17 of arcuate shape securedin place by screws 18 and formed with teeth-191m its vlower tace. The drive-roll 3 is mounted fast on a lhorizontal shaft 23 ournaled in bearings 24 supported onthe brackets or membersQ which form a part of thel machine frame. The shaft23 is Acontinuously driven through suitable power connect-ions not herein Shown. It willbe understood that the shaft 23 eX- tends longitudinally of the main frame of the machine whiehis Iadapted to support a plurality ot' winding heads or units, each having its own drive-roll rotating with the shatt O nlyV one winding unit is shown in the present drawings, but the complete machine may comprisev any suitable number thereof arranged on opposite sidesof the trame. v j n e -A second horizontal shaft 26, locatedbe- 'low and at the rear of the vdrive-roll shaft 23,\is journaled in bearing boxes 27 on the frame-members and is continuously driven to rotate the traverse-cams() for the several winding units. Each winding unit is provided with its own thread guide 35 comprisinga curved arm 36 projecting upwardly from a Slide or carriage 37. Referring to Fig. 1, thearm 36 is slotted at the top to receive a harden-ed guide-block 35S-'held in place by a screw 39, see F ig. 3, and provided with a groove 40 through which the strand 1/ of yarn, thread or other material feeds. kThe guide-carriage or slide 37 is mounted to slide on a horizontal rod 41 and afiat bar l2y which ex-tendbetween the brackets or vframe-members 25. Projecting rearwardly from the slide 37, is a stud 43 carrying a .bowl or roller ,45 which engages with the. helical groove 46 in` the cam 30. Through these connections the rotation of the cam. 30 causes the thread-guide dinally of the drive-roll 3 to traverse the strand y of yarn or other material as it feeds throughthe 'guide, whereby it is deposited in helical turns on the .surface of the cop or package being wound. strand of yarn or othermater-ial draws oli from a supply, usually arranged below the winding` unit, and as it feeds to the threadguide 35 tension is applied thereto through the use or' any suitable means. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the present tension-device comprises two rollers and 48 carried at the end of an arm orvbraclret 4:9 .secured to one of the trame-members 25. The strand g/ leads up over the roller L74 and under the roller Lltlto divert its course to apply tension thereto, and thence it is drawn up across a thread-bail 50 and through the groove 40 in the thread-guide 35.
The vthread-bail 50 consists oa lengthoi wire bent into inverted U-shapeas shown in Fig. 1 with its legs held in lugs or ears 51 on a tiltable frame or plate 55. Theftrame or plate is roclrably supported at the bottom on pins or studs 56 projecting Vfrom the sides of the raine-members25. Through this arrangernent the plate 55 constitutes .a threadlitter for raising the strand out of the groove 40 inthe thread-guide 35 whereby to disengage the strand from the guide to arrest its traverse thereby. The thread-lifter 55 is operated by means-oi an arm or bar 60 pivoted at 58 to a lug 57 projecting from its rearward side. The arm 6() extends beneath the quadrant 16 and terminates in a pawllike projection 6l adapted to engage successively'with the teeth 19 Ion ltheratehet 17 as the arm 5 vswings upwardly under the movement of the cop-holder 2 during the growth in the winding. VThe rearward end of the arm 60 is maintainedin yielding engagement with the teeth 19 on the ratchet 17 byA means of a coiled spring 63 anchored to the frame-member 25 with its vopposite end rhooked around a pin 64 on the arm.
It will be noted by reierenceto Fig. 2 yof the drawings that thethread-liter 55 is normally held in inclined relation extending upwardly at the rear of the thread-guide 35 to maintain` the thread-bail 50 in close proximity thereto.A VAdjustable means, are provided for supporting the thread-lifter in this position resting against `.the frame-members 25. For this purpose. l lmay` employ screws 65 extending through bos.,s 66 `on the back of the thread-lifter55 with their ends bearing against inclined lips 67 on the frame-members 25. The `screws 65 may be adjusted to set the thread-litter with its bail 50 in proper relation' withfrespect to the thread-guide 35,- and suitable check-nuts 68 are provided tolock the screws in adjustedfposition; ltv will be observed from theabove that as the cop-holder 2 rises from the drive-roll 3 during the growth of the paclragewound on the holder the quad- The' rant 16 is movedby and with thearm 5, whereby the teeth on the ratchet 17 are caused to engage successivelyA with the 'pawl k61 at the endv of the arm 60. Now, since the thread-lifter rests against the framemembers 25 thepawl 61will act as a dog or detentto restrain the arm 5 from swinging back or dropping down to lower the copholder. This doggingaction prevents the cop or bobbin from jumping or bounding on the drive-roll, due to inequalities in the suryface of the winding or from other causes.
lThe stcpping-mechanism of the machine is'actuat-ed by a tripor knock-oft' lever 70, illustrated in Figs. 1 to l and shown in detail in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The-pin or rod 58 on which the lever 60 is pivoted is held in lugs 57 on thefthread-lifter 55, as previously explained, and rockably mounted on this rod in position between the lugs is the bell-crank 70,herein termed the trip-l or knock-off lever. One arm 71 of the lever extends forwardly through an opening 59 in the thread-lifter and is formed with a boss at its en d carrying a wire or pin 7 3 adapted to be held in position bearing against. the strand Q/ as it draws between Athe tension-roll .48 and thc thread-bail 50.
This arm 71 is connected by a cross-strip 74. to the rearwardly extending arm 75 which acts as a faller or knock-off to rock the thread-lifter 55 and slide the arm 60. The arm 75 is formed with a depending weightportion 7G and isnormally suspended in the position shown in Fig. 2 by the tension of the strand 1/ drawing across the -pin 73. VThen the strand z/ breaks or 'its supply is exhausted the pin 7,3 will be released, whereby the weightedarni 75 of the lever 70 will drop down into the position illustrated in Fig. 3. As the knock-olf arm 75 drops it is adaptedpto be engaged by a constantly oscillating rocker-arm 77 whichserves as the power-'means for operating the stoppingmechanisin of the machine.
rEhe rocker-arm 77 is pivotally mounted on a stud 79 projecting from the sidefof lthe frame-member 25 and is formed with a forked end 79 which engages with and rides f on the periphery of an eccentric 8O carried ou and rotatable with the cam-shaft 2G. The rocker-arm 77 isof elbow-shape and provided with an vabrupt shoulder or abutment S1 adapted to strike against the end of the arm 75 of the knock-off lever 70 kas shown in Fig. 8. `When this engagement occurs the vfurther movement of the rockerarm 77 during the rotation of the eccentric VS0 acts through the `knock-off lever 70 to rcel; the thread-lifter 55 to arrest the operation of the machine `inthe manner as later more fully explained. n
rlhe starting of the winding operation is effected through the means -of a manuallyoperated lever 85, preferably formedwith a curved handle 86 reaching out from the' front of the `machine through an opening 85 in the thread-lifter 55. The starting-lever l is pivoted on a stud 87 held in the frame-member 25, being=provided with a `rearwardly extendingarm 89 located beneath. the pawlarm 60 and formed with an upstanding looped extension 90 embracing the arm. Through this connection the lifting of the handle of the starting-lever 85 causes it to depress the rearward end of thearni 60 to ref yan inclined face 94 on the under side off the lug 57 which supports one end of the pivotrod 58 for the knock-off lever 70. The setscrew 93 may be adjust-edrto bring its end vinto proper relationwith respect to the-lug 57 and suitable checlrnuts 495 arev provided to lock itin position. Another set-screw l9.6 on the forward arm ofthe lever 8 5 is adjustable to contact with theunderside of Athe knoc-lr-oli'arm 75of the lever70 and is held in adjusted position by means yof checlrnuts 97.
ylriaving now described the vconstruction .and arrangement of the 4winding machine and the present improved startingand stopping-mechanism therefor its method'of operation ywill next be explained.
Figs. k1 and 2 of vthe drawings illustrate the parts` of the machine in normal relation atthe start ofthe winding operation. The cop-tube or 'holder a; is shown asbearing on the. periphery of the drive-roll 3 with the strand yjz/ of yarn, thread or other-material leading up from the tension-device across thethread-bail50 and drawing through the groove 40 in thefthread-guide 35 to .feed to the cop or package. The drive-roll 31 is driven continuously and as the cop-holder 2 is ,rot-ated therefrom the strand i/-is wound on 'to theltube fr and traversedrback and forth longitudinally 'thercofvbyvthe constantly re- .ciprocated thread-guide 35.
As the yarn, thread or other material builds up on the f cop-tube m the swinging arm 5 rises to carrythe cop-holder 2 away from the drive-roll 3 in the usual manner. The raising of the arm 5 turnsthe quadrant. 16 to cause its teeth 19 to pass over and successively engage with the pawl (S1-on the arm 60. It has been explained that. the arm 60 is maintained in engagement with the teeth 19 on the ratchet 17 by means of the spring 63 also that the frame or thread 0f this engagement belifter 55 to which the arm 60 is connected bears against the fixed frame-members 25. Through this arrangement the arm 60 is held in position to act as a dog to check the retrogressive movement of the arm as the cop-holder `2 moves upwardly away from the rdrive-roll 3. l
'It has been noted that the trip-lever 70 is normally held with its arm 75 raised through 'the engagement of the strand v/ with the constantly oscillated from the eccentric 80 on the cam-shaft 26 and as the lever 70 comes into engagementtherewithV the upward movement of the rocker-arm causes the tiltable thread-lifter 55 to be forced back into the position illustrated in Fig. 3. As
thefthread-lifter 55 is tilted back in this.` L manner it draws the arm GO forward `and Vthrough the engagement of the pawl Gl at the end'of the arm with a tooth 'i9 on the ratchet 17 the quadrant/16 is caused to be swung to raise the.V arm 5, whereby `to lift the cop-holder 2 away .from the drive-roll 3 to Vinterrupt-the contact between the roll and the package being wound. This action causes/the arrest of the rotation of the copholder 2 and the rearwardly tilting action of the thread-lifter 55 acts through the thread-bail to raise the strand y out ofA the groove in the thread-guide 35.V In this manner the winding operation is arrested to provide for piecing up the ends of the broken yarn Vor furnish a new supplyas the case may be. l
After the thread-lifter has been thrown back into the position illustrated in Fig. 3 lie-lever will be released, as the rockerarni 77 moves back under the turning action of the eccentric 80, and its arm will drop down into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3 until it engages with the .stop-Screw 96 on the-fstarting-lever 85. Therefore, at the next upward movement of the rockera-rIn77 its shoulder or abutment 8l will clear the end of thearm 75 to prevent further coaction therebetween. As the arm 75 of the lever 70 drops down into this last position the thread-lifter 55 is released so that it may y swing back to a slight extent until its shoulr.ing operation is restarted der or notch 92 is engaged by the edge of the detent-block orlatch 91 on the rearward arm S9 of the starting-lever 85. in the manner-as f v i y that my invention provides an improved To start the winding-.operation the handle i .Gl on the arm 60 from the ratchet 17 on .the quadrant 16; As the handle 86 is raised, as shown in Fig. 4, the looped extension 90 on the arm 89 of thelever85 tilts the arm 60 downwardly-to release its end from the quadrant 19 whereby the arm 5 is allowed to swing downwardly under the 'action of .gravity to replace the cop in Contactr with the surface of the drive-roll 3. This lifting action ofthehandle 8G also'removes the detent-bloclrfll from engagement with the notch 92 on the arm 60, but the thread-lifter 55 is initially prevented from swinging back into first position through the coaction of means'operating in the manner as next explained. It has been stated that the present improved starting-mechanism is designed to prevent premature stopping of the winding operation after it has once been started and this result is obtained by restraining the thread-lifter 55 rfrom returning to position in. which-the tripor knock-od lever 70 may be engaged by the rocker-arm 77. As the cop is lowered into contact with `the driveroll 3 driving action thereof will be resumed,
but before the strandhas been picked up by the thread-guide 35 and the slacltalren up by the winding operation there is danger Iof premature stopping of the machine Vand hence the vaction of the stopping-mechanism is restrained for 1a period until the strand `has been drawn'tight. This control of the raised until the winding operationhas been properly started. That is to say, the handle '86 is held for an instantin Araised position whereby the engagement of its set-screw 93 with the inclined face 94 on the thread-lifter 55 retains the latter in the position illustrated in Fig. l to .prev-ent it from swinging back towards the thread-guide 35. After the operator is satisfied thatl the machine is properly operating and `the slack in the strand y has been taken up to cause the triplever 7 0 to rock back into the position shown in Fig. 2, the handle 86 -may be released. The release of the handle S6 allows the rearward arm 89 of the lever85to be rocked upwardly under the force of the spring 63 acting on the arm 60` to carry it back-into positionto engage the paw] Gl. with the ratchet 17 on the quadrant 16. The parts of the stopping-mechanisniiare tlnrs returned into normalrelation as shown in Fig. l with the .tripor knock-olf lever 70 held suspended by the strand y to prevent its rearward arm 75 from Contact with" the shoulder 81 on the rocker arm v7 7. 4
