Our invention relates to devices for stripping insulation from the ends of'electrical conductors so that the conductors may be readily secured to the terminals of electrical circuits. I
The invention has among its other objects the production of devices of the kind described which are simple in construction, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, compact, convenient, durable and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a device of the kind described which comprises a minimum number of parts and {nay be mounted upon a work-bench or the One form of the invention is embodied in a device which preferably comprises a onepiece base in which two posts are rotatably 2o journaled, the posts carrying knives which are adjustably secured thereto. The posts are provided with intermeshing gears. which co-operate with a spring to yieldably hold the knives in positions wherein they will. strip insulation from a wire drawn between them. 7
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.
To this end our invention consists in the novel construction. arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the 5 claims;

A substantially U-shaped spring 23 has its ends secured to the gears 18 by pins or screws 24 and, is so constructed that it tends to rotate the gears 18 and the postslt into positions wherein the knives15 will be disposed in positions wherein they are shown in full lines in Fig. 1. Obviously, the posts 14 may be displaced against the action of the spring into positions wherein they are shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. The gears 18 and the spring 23 are preferably disposed in a recess 10 provided in the sothat they areprotected from tools and the like usually found upon a work-bench. V
Riveted to the base 10 is a plate 27 which is preferably formed of a relatively hard metal, the plate 27 being so positioned with respect to the knives 15 that an electrical conductormay be guided thereby into the knives.
Adjustably secured to a boss 29 formed integral with the base 10 is a substantially I L-shaped gauge 30 provided with a slot 31 through which a screw 32 may be passed to .secure the gauge to the boss.- As shown, the screw 32 is preferably provided with a.
knurled head 34. so that it may be easily manipulated. I The operation of the above described dovice is substantially as follows: The device is preferably mounted upon a work-bench, or the like, in the manner above described and the knives 15 are adjusted so that the space between them is substantially equal to the diameter of the wire which-is to have insulation stripped therefrom. One end of the insulated wire is then passed over the plate 27 and between the knives 15 until it engages the gauge 30, which has been previously adjusted so that insulation willbe removed from a predetermined length of Wire. When the insulated wire is pushed between the knives 15, the knives rotate into positions wherein they areshown in dotted lines in Fig. -1. The insulated wire is then pulled back betweenthe knives which then bite into the insulation and out strip it from the wire.
In Fig. 7, we have shown another form of the invention wherein the plate 27 is re placed by a tubular member 35 rivetedto the baselO, the tubular member 35 being adapted to guide the ends of insulated wires when they are inserted between the knives 15.
