L. GSCHWIND MANHOLE COVER Filed June 12. 1926 1 'fx-umm a TTU/2N ya Patented June 12, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEON GsoHwINn, or YoUNGs'IoWN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR To. SANITARY SEWER BASIN Co., or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MANHOLE COVER.
Application filed June 12, 1926. Serial Nm 115,527.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved manhole. cover for street use which effectively retains its position without locking means and one which does not rock or clatter when stepped upon or when a vehicle wheel passes over the same. j
Objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation of myinvention will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. l is a side elevation of my improved manhole cover, the same being shown as mounted upon a sewer manhole or valve box or the like. l
Fig. 2 is a plan view of my Improved manhole cover.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on a line corresponding to line 3 3 of Figs. l and 2.
Fig. l is a side elevation of the cover proper removed from the body of the manhole.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, l represents the manhole of a sewer, valve box or the like. My improved manhole cover is mounted on the top as is usual practice and 'comprises an annular body member 2 having a base flange 3 which is set into the pavement of the like with the surface of the pavement flush with the top of the body member.
This body member has an internal recess 4 forming a supporting shoulder for the cover 5, the cover having a flange 6 removably tting the recess.
The supporting shoulder of the body member has a series of inclined steps 7 and 8, the steps 8 having serrations, preferably with rounded edges 9.
The cover flange has steps 'l0 and 11 which correspond to the steps 7 and 8 of the shoulder and fit or rest thereon.
A positioning pin 13 projects laterally from the cover to engage the notch lf-l in the body member, thus insuring the positioning of the cover with the corresponding steps of the shoulder in proper relation.
The cover is supplied with a handle 15.
VViththe parts thus arranged, the cover is very irmlylsupported so that it does'not rock when stepped upon or a wheel passes over the same, and the serrated edges 8 and 9 tend to wear into a very lirm seat. The cover is supported so that it is capable of sustaining very heavy loads.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a manhole cover, the combination of an annular body member having an internal annular recess adapted to receive a cover and providing a supporting shoulder therefor, the side wall of the recess being cylindrical, the shoulder having a plurality of inclined steps, certain of which have plain faces and certain of which are serrated, the serrations having relatively blunt curved edges, and a cover having an externally cylindrical flange fitting within said recess in said body member, the lower edge of the flange being stepped to correspond to the steps of its said cover supporting shoulder, certain of the steps of the cover being serrated to coact with the serrated steps of the supporting shoulder, the cover having aV laterally projecting positioning pin at one side and the body member having a notch to receive said pin.
2. In a manhole cover, the combination of an annular body member having an internal annular recess adapted to receive a cover and providing a supporting shoulder therefor, the side wall of the recess being cylindrical, the shoulder having a plurality of inclined steps, certain of which have plain faces and certain of which are serrated, and a cover having an externally cylindrical flange fitting within said recess in said body member, the lower edge of the flange being stepped to correspond to the -steps of its said cover supporting shoulder,
certain of the steps of the cover being serrated to coact with the serrated steps of the supporting shoulder, the cover having a laterally projecting positioning pin at one side and the body member having a notch to receive said pin.
3. In a manhole cover, the combination of an annular body member having an internal annular recess adapted to receive a cover' and providing a supporting shoulder therefor, the side wall of the recess being shoulder, the cover having a laterally prof Cylindrical, the shoulder havingf la plurality of inclined steps, and a cover having an eX- ternally cylindrical ilange tting Within said 60,855. illL Sadibody member, .the lowen edget. of the flange being stepped to correspondz to.. the steps of its said cover supportin jec'ting positioning pin, at one side andz 'the body member having a notchv to receive said pin.`
