ELECTRON-DISCHARGE DEVICE.
' Application filed April 18, 1919. Serial No. 290,968.
vThis invent-ion relates to vacuum tubes of the three-electrode type known as the audion. I
Its object is to provide an improved selfsupported electrode assembly whereby the use of a glass arbor or cane is obviated.
In accordance with this invention the anode is made up of a pair of parallel plates anchored in the press and spaced apart at 10 their ends by blocks of insulationmsecured thereto, the cathode and grid being located between the anode plates and supported at their opposite ends by said blocks.
Referring to the drawing 11 designates a 15 vacuum tube 11 having a press 12, and a double surface plate electrode 13 mounted on said press 12 at its lower end by rigid wires 14, and spaced at its lower and upper ends by the insulatin spacers, preferably of lavite 15, 16 and 1 These spacers comprise flat slabs of lavite. The plate surfaces are connected metallically by Wire rivits 18 at the bottom and by wires 19 and 20 at the top, which are at points welded to the plate structure, The ends of'wires 19 and 20 are brought together at the top in a point 21 which projects into the top of the vessel 11 and may provide means whereby too much vibration of the electrode unit is prevented. A grid 22 rests on the lower lavite spacer and is connected to a rigid lead-in wire 23 and is guided at its to by sliding in grooves 24 in the sides 0 the spacers 16 and 17. Wires 25 and 26 are connected to the spacers 16 and 17 and are provided ,at their free ends with loops through which passes a filament 27 which is connected at its lower ends to wires 28 on the spacer 15 and a lead in wire 29. It is apparent that by this structure an clectrode unit is provided in which a double surface electrode, mounted on an audion press, is spaced by insulating material and, through the insulating material, serves as a 5 support for another electrode.
What is claimed is:
1. An electron discharge device comprising opposed parallel anode plates, insulating blocks carried thereby at opposite ends 2 thereof, and a cathode and a double grid electrode located between the anode lates and sup orted at their opposite en s by said bloc s.
2. An electron discharge device compriscarried thereby at opposite ends thereof, a
cathode, anda double grid electrode located between the anode plates and supported at their opposite ends by said blocks, a press and metallic means for supporting the anode plates from said press.
3. An electron discharge device comprising a vessel containing an anode, and another electrode, and means for supporting both electrodes as a unit from the same end of said vessel, the anode comprising two opposed portions having continuous sur faces, said means comprising insulating connecting members for spacing one portion from the other portion and comprising addi tional means for supporting said portions from the vessel wall.
4. An evacuated vessel having a press and containing an anode, a grid having an end adjacent the press, and means carried by the 7 anode for supporting the end of the grid adjacent the press.
5. An evacuated vessel having a press and containin an anode, a grid, and a cathode, each having an end adjacent the press, and means carried by the anode for supporting the ends. of the cathode and the grid adjacent the press.
6. An electron discharge device comprising a vessel having a stem, an electrode structure comprising two parallel plates having continuous surfaces, insulating means for spacing one of said plates from the other, metallic means for supporting said plates solely from said stem, and an electrode supported from said insulating means.
7. An electron discharge device comprising a vessel having afipress, an anode comprising a pair of parallel plates supported solely from said press, spacing means for said plates comprising a block of insulating material interposed between said plates and supported thereby, and a plurality of electrodes supported by the said insulating spacanode, the cathode, and the grid, as a unit at 10. An electron discharge devicezcompristhe other end of said vessel. ing an insulating block having rooves and 9. An electron discharge device comprisan electrode having portions fiidably armg an anode, an insulating block supported ranged in said ooves. 5 by said anode, said block having grooves, In witness w ereof, I' hereunto subscribe and a grid having portions arranged to my name thisl5th day of A ril A.
