It will be noted from an examination of Figure 5 that when theend flap extensions 20, 20 are folded down upon top of the side wings 15, 15, as above described, the marginal parts of the wings 15, near the ends of the box are embraced between the narrow flap 19 at the top of the end wall 16 and the end cover flap extension 20.
Thus not only is a closure made, Without gaps, adjacent the end wall of the box,-but
in addition, a very strong construction is produced.
The one sealing strip 22 efiiciently' closes and seals the box. But, if desired and for purposes of additional strength, staples may be applied to rigidly connect the cover flap extensions 20, the flaps 19 and the marginalparts of the side wings 15 embraced between them, rigidly together, as indicated by the staples shown at 25 in dotted lines in Fig-.

The construction described presents a recessed end box in the form of a"top .loader and has. allthe advantages of strength at the ends of such a box, combined with the convenience of packing of a top loader? In addition, it has the advantage that the box may be absolutely sealed with the use of the one sealing strip, where, heretofore, it has been necessary to use three sealing strips.
Instead of the sealing strip, the cover flap extensions 20, 20 may be sealed and attached to the cover wings 15, 15 (and to each other at their ends, when they overlap) by cement,
silica or other suitable material generally used in the art for attaching a board in flat engagement with another paper board. .In

Here, again, the end cover flap extensions are'made of such length as to butt together, asshown in Figure 6, or to overlap, as shown in Figure 10. But, they are folded down uponthe narrow side cover wings 15 of the body and are at-- tached together by a single sealing strip 22 as before.
Both types ofbox illustrated represent manifestly a considerable saving in material when compared to the usual top loadergi since the necessity for extending the cover wings 15, 15 to cover the entire top of the box is eliminated.
' I claim as my invention A top loading recessed end box comprising a body blank and two end blanks, the body blank being creased to provide the bottom and two sides of the box and two side cover Wings, each end blank being-cut and creased to provide an'end of the box, with narrow strips-at the sides, bottom and top thereof, the side and bottom strips being attached within the marginal end of the body blank so that the end of the box is recessed within said body, and the top strip having a cover extension which folds back onsaid top strip, the two side cover wings resting on the end top strips, and the two top cover extensions folding down upon the side cover wings and being sealed thereon, the side, bottom and top strips of each end blank cooperating with the body of the box and the top cover extensions to form an outwardly extending reinforcing rib at each end of the box.
