This invention relates to a device for applying revenue stampsto package wrapping outspread condition in order to avoid the dificulties heretofore encountered in makingrevenue stamps stick to more or less irregularly shaped wrapped packages. plvith this and other objects not specifically mentioned in View, the inventionconsists incertain constructions and combinations which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically set forth in the claims hereunto appended. 4
In the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate the same or like parts, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. Qis a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same; Figs. 1 and are end views of the stamp feed in its two extreme positions, as seen jflOlll'tllt line 55 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 is a side view of the wrapper aligning and ejecting devices.
In carrying the invention into effect, there is provided a source. of wrapper material supply. a source of revenue stamp supply, mechanism for assembling in outspread condition wrapping material and stamps drawn from said sources of supply, and means for causing said out-spread and assembled wrapping material and stamps to stick together preparatory to use of said wrapping material and stamps in packaging machines. In the; best constructions contemplated, the source of wrapping material supply includes a magazine for individual wrappers and means for successively delivering wrappers therefrom to said mechanism; the-s0urce of revenue stamp supply includes a magazine for individual stamps and means for successively delivering stamps therefrom to said mechanism; and the means for causing said outspre'ad and assembled wrapping material and stamps to stick together includes a pasteapplying device coactive with said mechanism between said sources of supply. These parts may be widely varied inv construction within the scope of the claims, for the particular structure selected to illustrate the invention is but one of many possible concrete embodiments of the same; The invention therefore is not tobe restricted to the precise details of the structure shown and"v described.
Referring to the drawings, Figs. 1 to 3, the device is mounted on the frame of the machine whichconsists of a rectangular casting 7 having an end upright 8 and side uprights 9 and 10. The wrapper magazine 11, which is stationary, has end plates 12 by means of which it is attached to' the uprights 8 of the frame. The stack of wrappers 13 in the magazine rests on a rollerv 14 whose shaft 15 has a sprocket 16 driven by a chain 17 from a sprocket 18 of a drive shaft 19. The shaft.
15 of the roller 14, by means of a. gear 2 intermediate gear 2]., and gear 22, drives the pull-out rollers 23 which are supported between plates 24, the, latter being pivoted on the shaft 15 and adjustably held stationary by screws 25. The plates 24 also carry an adjustable rod 26' upon which are mounted two guides 27 and an intermediate guide 28 for the emerging, wrapper. The rollers 23,
by the aid of the guides 27 and 28, deliver the wrapper 13 to the endless conveyor 29 running over sprockets 30 and '31, the shaft 32 of the former being adjustable in the frame 7, while the shaft 33 of the latter is fixed.

shafts-56 and (SO are carried by bearings 61 and 62, respectively, mounted on the frame 7, the shaft having a spiral gear 63 meshmg with a gear 64 on a vertical shaft 65.
I The shaft 65 is supported by bearings 66 and 67, the former of which is attached to the frame 7, and the latter to the upright 9. The shaft 65 is driven by a bevel gear 68 meshing with a gear 69 on the drive shaft 19.
As the wrapper 13 passes under the stamp magazine 70, a stamp 71 is deposited on its edge which has previously been supplied with paste, the stamp being smoothed down and sealed by a brush 72 attached by an arm 73 to the frame of the magazine 70. The stamp magazine has a laterally projecting pin 74 by means of which it is suspended, by a lever 75, from. a shaft 7 6 supported in .the uprights 9 and 10, and has a vertical slide 77 movable in a guide 78 fastened to the upright 9.
The shaft 76 is rocked by means of a crank 79 connected by a rod 80 to an eccentric 81 on the drive shaft 19, thereby giving to'the stamp magazine a periodic up-anddown motion. The stamp magazine (Figs. 4 and 5) has horizontal side brackets 82 which carry shafts 83 and 84 upon which are mounted levers 85 engaging the stamps 71. On one end of the shaft 83 is mounted a lever 86 carrying a pin 87 engaging a slot in a lever 88 clamped to the shaft 84 on which is also mounted an arm 89 having its free end shaped in hook-fashion, the hook portion engaging with a stop 90 attached to the frame 7 when the magazine slide is in its lowermost position. The pin 87 is pulled upwards against a stop 91 mounted on the magazine frame by a spring 92 attached to the slide 77, thereby pressing the free ends of the levers 85 against the edges ofthe stamps 71.
As the wrapper 13 arrives below the stamp magazine 70, the latter comes down on it, the magazine thereby being held sta-v the levers 85 and releasing the stamps, the
lowermost. of which adheresto the wrapper which is held down by suction furnished by a vacuum pump 93 through a hose connection 94 and suction head 95 in one of the rails 47, while the magazine moves up. As soon as the arm 89 leaves the stop 90, the levers 85 re-engage the stampsv and move all except the lower most one up in the magazine until the rear side bracket 82 again'engages the stop 91, whereupon magazine and slide move up together, the wrapper being meanwhile held down by the suction. By the relative motion'between the magazine and its sllde,'the bulk of the stamps is separated from those below the levers 85, thus releasing the weight from the bottom stamps and making the action of the stamp discharge independent of the height of the stack. The suction pump 93 is attached to the frame 7 r and is driven by an eccentric 96 mounte on the drive shaft 19. I The pasting device consists of the stationary paste reservoir 97 having the rotating paste drum 98, and of the swinging paste 7 transfer 99. The paste reservoir 97 is detachably mounted on a bracket 100 attached to the upright 9. It is provided with bearings for the shaft 101 of the paste drum 98,
and also carries a scraper 102 which removes the surplus paste from the drum. The drum shaft 101 has a sprocket 103 which is driven by a chain 104 from a sprocket 105 on a shaft 106 journaled in a bearing 107 attached to the frame 7. The shaft 106 is driven by a bevel gear 108 meshing with a bevel gear 109 on a cam shaft 110. The cam shaft 110 is journaled in the frame 7 and has a sprocket 111 which is driven by a chain 112 from a sprocket 113 on the drive shaft 19.

The lower end of the-slide 1.18 is provided with a lug 120-which, by a link 121, is connected to the free end of a cam lever 122, the latter being fulcrumed at 123 on the frame 7 and carrying the roller 124; which is kept in engagementvitlr a cam 125 on the shaft 110by means of a spring 126 attached tothe frame 7. As the lever 122 is moved up and down by the cam 125, the rack 117 turns the gear 116 back and forth, thereby transferring paste from the drum 98 to the wrapper 13 on the rail 47, I as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3.

The attachment to the bracket 12S made adjustable by means of a screw 130, so that. the tension of the wire 1127 can be regulated from time to' time. The combination with a wrapper sup port, of a stamp magazine, mechanism producing relative approaching and retreating movements ofsaid support and said magai zine whereby stampsail'e afliX-ed toiwrappers, and a suction device holding each wrapper and its stamp during a retreating movement to withdraw said stamp from said magazine, said support having a horizontal active surface, and said relative movements being in vertical directions.
8. The combination with a wrapper support, of a stamp magazine, mechanism produeing relative approaching and retreating movements of said support and said magazine whereby stamps are afliized to wrappers, and a suction deviceholding each wrapper and its stamp during a retreating movement to withdraw said stamp from said magazine, said magazine having spring-actuated and cam-controlled means for supporting a majority oi the stamps therein independently of the minority during stamp delivery.
9. The combination with a wrapper support, of a stamp magazine, mechanism producing relative approaching and retreating movements of said support and said magazine whereby stamps are ail'ixed to wrappers, and a suction device holding each wrapper and its stamp during a retreating movement to withdraw said stamp from said magazine, said mechanism including eccentric-actuated means for moving said magazine toward and away from said support.
10. The combination with a wrapper support, of a stampniagaziiie, mechanism producing relative approaching and retreating movements of said support and said magazine whereby stamps areaflixed to wrappers,-
and a suction device holding each wrapper and its stamp during a retreating movement to withdraw said stamp from said magazine, said magazine being mounted in a slideway, and said mechanism including eccentric-actuated means for moving said magazine in said slideway.

The combination with a Wrapper support, of a stamp magazine, mechanism producing relative approaching and retreating movements of said support and said magazine whereby stamps are aflixed to wrappers, and a suction device holding eachwrapper and its stamp during a retreating movement to withdraw said stamp from said magazine, said device including a suction head at the stamping station and a pump intermittently establishing suction therein.

The combination with a wrapper support, of a stamp magazine, mechanism producing relative approaching and retreating movements of said support and said magazine whereby stamps are aflixed to wrappers, and a suction device holding each wrapper and its stamp during a retreating movement to withdraw said stamp from said magazine, said device including a suction head at the stamping station and an eccentric-actuated pump-connected therewith.

The combination with a: wrapper sup port, ot a stamp magazine, mechanism producing relative approaching and retreating movements of said support and said magazine whereby stamps are atfixed to wrappers, a suction device holding each w apper and its stamp during a retreating movement to withdraw said stamp from said magazine, and means for presenting wrappers to said support.

a suction device holding each wrapper and its stamp during a retreating movement to' withdraw said, stamp from said magazine, and means for applying adhesive to wrap pers' before said mechanism comes into action. 1

The combination with a wrapper support, of a stamp magazine, mechanism producing relative approaching and retreating movements of said support and said magazine whereby stamps are affixed to wrappers, a suction device holding each wrapper and itsstamp during a retreating movement to withdraw said stamp from said magazine, and means for aligning a wrapper on said support betore said mechanism comes into action.
