This invention relates to sewing machines,
produced by the rapid vibratory motion of the needle bars.
It 1s the object of the present invention to provide simple and durable means for locking the two needlebars together and `for maintaining one oi' the needle` bars in elevated inoperative position.
It is believed the invention will bev understood most readily from a detailed de- 'scription thereof taken `in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is aview of the sewing machine head looking at the face plate and partscar# ried thereby; y y

ing 12 is theV hollowy needle bar 13, and slidably arranged `in the bearing 11 and also through the center of the hollow bearing 13 is the needle bar 14 whichl is preferably a solid cylindrical member.
Fixed to the needle bar 14, in any desired manner, is the arm 15, shown in detail' in'Figure 8. The arm 15 is provided with a bore 16 through which the needle bar 14 passes. The arm is also provided with a circular .downwardly extending portion 17 which., is spaced 'from the bar 14 so as to per-A mit one side of they hollow needle bar 13 to reciprocate within the space between theV arm 17 and the bar 14.v Arm 17 at the lower end thereof is provided with a laterally vextending pin 18 to which is piv'otally joined one end of the pitman 19, the other end of the pitman being rotatably mounted on the pin 20 which is eccentrically mounted on the machine drive sh aft 21 rotatably mounted in the machine arm 9.2. The outer endof the pin 18 is providedv with an anti-friction collar 23 which is positioned inthe slot 24 of the frame in order to guidethe lowerend of thel arm in its reciprocatory motion.
Extending outwardly from the side yolf the hollow barv 13 is a ylug 25 which passes through the opening 26 in the locking or latching arm 27 (see Figure 7). The lug also passes through the slot 2S in the machine faceplate 29 so that rotarymotion of the hollow .bar v13 is prevented.
Pivot-ally mounted in the head on the fixedpivot 30 is a dog 31, which adapted to co-operate with the lug .32 on the locking- `or latching member?? in order to maintain the hollowv needle bar inits upper inoperative position. spring 33 is provided which normally tends to move the upper end of the dog 31 to the right, as viewed in Figures 5 and 6. The vdog 31 adjacent to the f upper end thereof is provided with a recess 34 adapted to receive the lug 32fon the bar 27 when said bar is rotated .in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed in Figures 5 and 6. The lockingarm 27 is also provided at the upper end thereof with an internal recess or offset y35 adapted when said lockingmember isrotated ina clockwise direction, as seen in Figures 5 and 6, to engage the lug 36 on the arm 15 (see Figures 5 and 8) in order to lock the two needle bars together.
The locking` member 27 is provided with a pin 37- which projects through a slot 38 in the link oiI lever 39 pivotally supported on the face plate 29 by means ol'E the screw 40. The upper end of the lever 39 is guided by means oit the screw 4l which pasies through the arcuate slot 42.
A link 43 has one end pivotally joined to the lever 39 by .means of the screw 44. The other end ot the link 43 is joined to one arm of the bell crank lever 45 by means of the screw 46. The other arm oit the lever 45 is joined through the medium ot the link 47 (see Figures 3 and 4) to one arm ot' the bell crank lever 48, the other arm of lever 48 being joined to one arm of the 'operating lever 49 through the medium ot the link 50. A spring 5l is provided which tends normally to torce the link 50 upwardly, link 47 to the lett, as seen in Figures'f and 4, and link 43 tothe right, as seen in Figure l. In this position, the notch of the locking member 27 is arranged to engage the lug 36 on the arm l5 to lock the tivo needlebars together, as above explained.
When it is desired to release the hollow needle bar and retain it in its elevated in operative position, the operator will press upon the leverv 49, as by lier knee, causing the upper end oil the locking member 27 to move to the le'i't, as seen in Figures 5 and 6. This will move the notch 35 from engagement vith the lug 36, but will cause the lug 32 to move intoa position .where it will be engaged by the notch 34 inthe dog 3l, thus releasing` the hollow needle bai` from the other one and locking .it in elevated position.
.This operation otreleasing one of the needle bars from the other is found greatly toiiacilitate the turning of corners.
It will thus be seen that applicant has provided for locking the needle bars together or for holding one of them in inoperative position by the use ot the minimum number of simple and durable parts.
l lNhile in the drawings and in the above description, applicant has disclosed but a singleembodiinent of his invention, it is to be understood that certain modifications are conten'iplated, and the invention, therefore, should be limited merely by the scope of the appended claims.

saidy latching member having a slot with a recess in one wall of said slot, a lug on` said latching member, a` shoulder' on the'other of said needle-bars engaging in said slot and receivable in said recess, a shoulder, stationiary relative to the reciprocations ol the needle-bars, mounted on said head and adapted to engage the lug on said latching member, and means for swinging said latchder projecting therefrom andthe slot thereof having a recess at one end thereof, a moving shoulder carried by the other of said needle bars, a shoulder stationary relative to the motion of said needle bars, oneof said last-` named shoulders engaging in said slot, and
' means for swinging said latching member to engage and disengage said shoulders.
17. A sewing machine comprising a head,
a pair of needle barsk slidably mounted ink said head, a latching member pivotally con!` nected toV one ofl said needle bars-for pivotal movement in a substantially vertical plane, said latching member, having a longitudinal slot therein provided with a lateral recess at onevend of said slot, a lug projecting from the other of said needle bars and playing in said slot, a shoulder projecting from said latching member, a shoulder stationary relative to the reciprocating movement of said needle bars adaptedv to be engaged by the shoulder on said latching member, and means ,for swinging said latching member to bring said lug into said recess or to bring said shoulders into cooperating engagement.
