This invention "relates to machines" for straightening 'clutchdisks and similar ar-- tides: and is illustrated as embodied in a modification of astandard drill press. Prefa erably the disks are straightened byrrolling them in such a manner as to flex various portions of the disk back and forth, to straighten out any Warped or bent parts.
In one desirable arrangement, lthere are or freely-rotatable, sets two novel floating, or units of rollers, engaging respeotlvely. the upper andlower surfaces of the clutch'disk, the rollers of one=setpreferably being staggered with respect to thoseof the other set,
to secure the described flexing action. .In order to provide for readily inserting-andwithdrawing the disks, the parts on the opposite sides of the disk-may be arrang be separated axially of the disk, and in the arrangement illustrated in the drawings these parts are arranged in a' novel manner such {that they are automatically brought into operative inter-engagementby their re-- turn to the workingposition." I find-it advantageous'in practice to use conical rollers upper and lower conical "tracks,
supported by g so that a very heavy pressure may be exerted on the diskswithout any binding of the moving parts. i The above and other objects and features of the invention, including various novel combinations of parts and desirable particular constructions, Will be apparent from'the following description of" one illustrative embodiment shown inqthe accompanying drawings, in which 2; i 9
Figure 1 is a side levation of a drill Fig. 2 isa view of the operating'pa'rts', partly infront elevation; and- Fig. 3 is a horizontal 33 of Fig. 2, showing the-lower set of rollers.
embody'my invention in a'modificationof a standard drill press including-an adjustable'base- 10, and a vertical standard 12 having an upper arm 14;for thesupport of a power driv'enshaft'l6 driving thr ough bevel gears 18 a sleeve'keyed to avertic'a'l driven shaft 20 raised and lowered by a rack sleeve 22 .anda pinion having an'oper ating lever 24 supported on 'a llower' f .2 of the standard 1 I Y I ed to press" p constitute a lower floating or freely-rotata' ble set or unit, and that 'similarlythering 64 in-centralverticalsection 'andpartly and itsrol'lers 62'cons'titute an upper floatsection on the, line As notedabove, I findfit convenient to p ---Wll'ih 'fingers'48.
i --.The' clutch disk D is supported: by
series of conical trollers=30 engaging its lower: surface, the rollers being supported by rolling on a conicaltrack 32 secured by machine'screws'34 to a plate 36 carried'by the base 10. Each roller is journaled on a spindle 38 projecting inwardly from a ring 40, a thrust bearing 42 preferablybeingprovided. at the base'of the roller: Rotatably mounted ona thrust bearing 44 on track 32 1s a bed 46, having fingers 48 entering-"the usual notches in the edge of disk D. Thus bed 46 serves as means for rotating the disk" about its axis. a 1
.Bed 46: has clutch teeth 50 on" its upper surface which, when rack 22. is in'its" lowest position, are engaged'by teeth 52 on the bottom ofa driving member 54 secured by machine screws 56 toa par-13:58 drivenby shaft 20, Member'54 has a' guide or pilot 6( profjecting "axially into a central cylindrical opening in the bedi46.
The upper surface of thedisk engaged described for rollers 30 on spindles projecting inwardly from airing 64. '7 Rollers 62- are by conical" rollers 62, rotatably mounted as supported, to be easily rot'atable under heavy pressure; by a conical track 66 se- I curedfto ap'art' 68 backed up by afthrust 'bearin 70 resting against a flange of part spect to rollers '30,-i; e. each roller 623'c'omes between two rollers 30; Toinsure the main connected by pins 7 2 secured :toring 64 and 'slidable in'vertical bores formed in ring 40.
It will be seenjthat ring 40 and rollers 30 tenance of this relation, rings 40 and 64 are v arat'ed fromthe {lower'parts asfshown'in' v I Fig. 1, alc'lutch dISk is 'laidby the operator on rollers 3O with its, notches in engagement 1 Lever 24-"is then operated to lower the upper parts,
including the" driving member 54 and-the upper roller-s62, I
thus-clamping thedisk upper and lower rollersfi'As the disk is ro-' tated, it pulls thelrol-lers around with it,-
causing'them to rollfon 'its upper-and lower surfaces, f and fortliof all parts of the disk, completely ironing out any'w'arpe'clnordistorted parts.
