PORTABLE BED.

My invention relates to folding beds and more particularly pertains to sanitary beds of all metal construction, designedjto be mounted on rollers, and when foldedup, to
bemoved into a closet andkept'out of sight. In constructingbeds of this/type it is 7 important that they be as narrow in side elevation as possible in .orderto economize incloset space and atthe same time be steady and rigid when'moved'out of the closet and utilized. Heretofore it has been found ne cessary. that the head piece of the bed beheavily weighted in order that: it will nottilt or lift upwardly when the bedis lowered, asthe "base space must necessarily be narrow.
It is the object of myrpresent invention to provide a construction which will serve to overcome the above recited disadvantages,
"and at the same time preserve the narrow base span and obviate the necessity of Weighting the bed in any'manner. c A further object is to provide a bed'which will be perfectly counterbalanced at all times while being manipulated intoor out of usable position. I
Still another object is to provide means for preventing the structure from rolling backward or forward while the mattress is being lowered or lifted.
The above and other objectsof my in ventionwill be more fully disclosed in the following specification, and by; referring tothe annexed drawings, in which: v

In the construction of the bed, opposite sides are identical, they being tied together by suitable spacing bars which will be hereu inafter mentioned, so a description of one side will serve as a description of the other.
Referring tothe drawings, 10 and 11 represent oppositely disposed head leg members, which are U-shaped inform, and preferably made of round tubing,and comprise the horizpntally disposed bars 12 and the depending legs 13 and 14 which are equipped with rollers'15 and 16. 3 as at 39. Pins 40 project from the angle irons 18 and pass through the slots 39, thus permitting the'brace bars'38'to have a sliding movement. The bars 33 and 38 form a toggle truss for the support ofvthe bed frame when thebed is lowered as clearly shown in Figure 5 of the drawings.
A head board 41, which is preferably formed of tubing bent into theshape of a U, is provided, and the legs of the same are pivotedat 42 to the extension arms 43 sec'ured'to the goose neck members '23 and The ends of the link brace straps 44 are pivoted at 45 to the legs of the head board 41 and their opposite ends have pivoted to them at 46 the link members 47, said link straps 44 being pivoted intermediate of their ends at 48, to standards 49 secured to the fixed angle irons 17 Pivoted at 50 to they brace legs 32 and 33 are link brace straps 51, the opposite ends of which are pivoted on the pins 52 projecting from the link members 47 and also pivoted on the pins 52 intermediate of their ends are the cross bars 53. Interposed between one of the ends of each of the crossbars 53 arid the leg bars 32 and 33 are the springs 54, shown more clearly in Figure 5 of the drawings, the spring is broken out for sake of clearness. Interposed between the opposite ends of the cross bars 53 and the goose neck members 23 and 24 are springs 55, and interposed between theends of the link-members 47 and the goose neck members 23 and 24 are the springs 56.
It will be noticed by reference to Figure 5 of the drawings that the entire bed occupies exceptionally narrow space, and that the bed rails constituting the platform, are locked in a vertical position by means of the transverse angle bar 36 secured to the leg bars 32 and 33, which are also looked in substantially an upright position, the springs 54 acting to pull the brace straps 51 past the pivotal center 34 for this purpose. When the members 32 and 33 arelowered into bracing position the same springs serve to ,press these members downwardly on to the floor when the operator exerts a slight pres-- sure on them to move them past the center 34 in. the opposite direction, as clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings.
As the platform of the bed is lowered, the springs 55 and 56 serve to counterbalance the same, they being so disposed as to increase in tension as the foot end of the platform increases the leverage.
When it is desired to open the bed, first, the members 32 and 33 are lowered to the position shown in Figure 3. During this operation all of the springs assist in cansing them to move downwardly after. they have passed the vertical position.
The bed platform is next swung on its pivots 19 to a horizontal position as shown in Figure 5,
before mentioned. During this operation the springs 55 and 56 exert a straightening out strain on the toggle truss formed by the thereby giving to the frame a wide base supit being counterbalanced throughout this operation by the'springs as During the lowering operation the members.

Having thus described my what I claim is:
1. A folding bed comprising a frame, a platform pivoted to said frame, a leg member pivoted to said frame, a brace bar pivoted at one of its ends to said leg, member and slidably pivoted to said'frame at its opposite end, a pair of link members pivoted invention together, one of said links having its end pivoted to said leg member, a head board member pivoted to said platform, a link brace strap member pivoted to said head board member and said frame and having its end extending beyond the pivotal point 7 on said frame and pivoted to said pair of link members,.a spring connected to said pair of link members and to said platform, and a spring connected to said pair of link members and, to said leg-member. 4 l

A folding bed comprising a frame, a platform pivoted to said frame, a legmember pivoted to said frame, a brace barpivoted at one of its ends to said leg member and slidably connected to said frame atitsc opposite end, a pair of link members pivoted together at one end, the oppositeend of one of said link members being pivoted to said leg member, the opposite end of the other link member being pivotally connected to said frame, and a'spring connected to said platform and to said pair of link members.
3. A folding bed comprising a frame, a platform pivoted to said frame, a leg member pivoted to said frame, a brace bar pivoted at one of itsends to said leg member and slidably connected to said frame atits opposite end, a pair of link members pivoted together at one end, the opposite end of one of said link members "being pivoted to said leg member, the oppositeend of the other link member being pivotally connected to said frame, and a spring connected to said platform and to said pair of link members, and a spring connected to said pair of links and to said leg.
