G. SCHURIMANN BATTERY CHARGING CLIP OR CONNECTER Filed Sept. 22, 1926 Patented May 29, 1928,
GEORGE SCH'URIMANN, 0F SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
BATTERY-CHARGING CLIP 0R CONNECTER.
Application filed September 22, 1926. Serial No. 187,090.
This invention relates to terminal devices for electrical conductors and has for its object the provision of a novel terminal member, connecter or clip designed for use in connection 1 with storage batteries during charging thereof, whereby to provide an Ldequate and positive connection which will are practically incapable of corrosion while being easily applied and positive in making a perfect connection.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character of a wedge like construction so arranged that when the elements thereof are applied to or engaged upon the terminal post of a storage battery there will be no looseness, play or, possible bad connections to interfere with the action.
acter which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to apply and remove, positive in action, efficient and durable in service, and a art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and the arrangement and combination of-parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device engaged upon the terminal post of a storage battery.
Figure2 is a side elevation,
Figure 3 is a detail horizontal section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is wedge member alone.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a portion of a storage battery and B indicates oneof the terminal posts thereof. In carrying out the invention, I provide a terminal member or connecter adapted for engagement upon the post B and comprising-a body 10 of any suitable size and shape constructed of suitable insuiating material, such as porcelain, fiber, hard rubber or-the like, having a circular hole 11 therein of a size somewhat larger than the diameter of the post B so that it may be easily slipped thereover.
, The body member 10 is further provided with a transversely extending slot 12 which has its wall 13 most remote from the circular hole 11 straight or at right angles to tially general improvement in the .wardly a finger hold by means a perspective view of the the sides and which has its wall 14 nearest the opening 11 inclined with respect to the wall 13. In other words, it may be said that the opening is wedge shaped.
Inconjunction with the body-member 10, make use of a wedge member 15 which is necessarily formed of some suitable insulating material, and which in the present instance is represented as formed from a single length of resilient metal folded or bent upon itself longitudinally to provide a channel member which may be said to be U-shaped in cross section, at least substanso. The member 15 is wedge shaped in plan in addition to being U-shaped in cross section, and the smaller end thereof receives and is suitably secured, as by solder- An additional object of the invention is, to provide a. terminal device of this charing or the like, to the bared end portions 16 of. a conductor 17 connected with any suitable source of supply for charging the battery. The smaller end of the wedge member 15 is preferably provided with outextending flared or curved lips 18 which facilitate connection with the conduetor. At its opposite end, the. wedge member 15 is formed with outwardly extending flanges or lips 19 which will define of which the operator may grasp the wedge member and pull it into or out of place.
The ,wedge member 15 is designed to en-' gage against the post B and for thisreason the edges of the upper and lower sides or opposite sides thereo are toothed or serrated as indicated at 20 so as to bite into the lead of which the post B is formed to give a good contact.-
In the use of the device, it will be readily apparent that in order to effect attachment to the battery post, the wedge member 15 should be pushed through the body member 10 so as to be in obstructing relation to the circular hole or opening 11. The body member 10 is then engaged upon the terminal post- B of the battery and the wedge member 15 is pushed, by engaging the fingers or a tool against the flanges or lips 19 so as to bring it forcibly into engagement with the post or terminal member B. 'It is then preferable that the operator grasp the member 10 and rotateit slightly so as to cause the teeth or serrations 20 on the member 15 to bite firmly and comparatively deeply into the soft lead of which the terminal post B is constructed in order to 1nsure a thorough and perfect connection.
v described, it is quite The connection having been made as above obvious that the method of charging the battery may be proceeded with as usual, the present invention being not concerned therewith. It is believed that the construction, operation and advantages will be readily apparent to one skilled in the art without further explanation.
While I have shown-and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, constructionand arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim. Having thus described the invention, I claim:
A device of the character described comprising a body member of insulating material having a substantially circular hole 20 therethrough adapted to receive the terminal post of a storage battery, the body member being further provided with a transversely extending slot of a wedge-like formation, and a metallic wedge member carried by a conductor and slidably mounted within said slot in position to engage against the terminal post of the storage battery, said wedge member being formed from a single piece of resilient metal bent longitudinally to define a shape which is substantially U- haped in cross section, the edges of the U-shaped sides being toothed for engagement with the terminal post of the storage battery. v
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GEORGE SCHURIMANN.
