CLOWN PHONIC GAME.
1 V applieatioaflodl-uly l,
The present invention, relates .to a phonic game for-use in instructing children of primary and pre-school age in the formation of letters into simple words and in the effect of a final e upon a group of letters.
It is Well known that impressions which are associated in the mind with an interesting objectare more easily recalled and more firmly retained than those which are not interesting in themselves and which are not so associated.
An object of the present invention is-to facilitate the learning of words and letter associations by forming new words and letter associations on a device having a plurality of sound forming letters about the periphery thereof, and having a final e mounted in connection with a character of interest to register withany of said letters.
In order to attain this object, there is provided, in accordance with one feature of the invention, a pair of concentric disksmounted in superposed relation to each other, the upper of said disks bearing a plurality of letters and letter groups about the periphery thereof with an openingpositioned radially inward of each of said letter or letter groups. Printed upon the lower disk, and positioned to re ister with the openings in the first name disk, are a plurality of letters and letter groups which may be combined with the first named letters and letter groups in a upper disk. A letter e is printed adjacent said openin to complete a Word or syllable formed by t l ter group on the periphery of the upper disk and the letter or lettergroup which is visible through the opening adjacent said letter or letter group. a 1
These and other features of the invention will be more fully brought out in the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1, is a view in top elevation of a device made in accordance with the present invention, a ortion of the upper disk there of being broken away to more clearly illustrate the construction of the device; and
Figure 2, is a View in lower edgewise elevation of the device shown in Figure 1.
1e combination of a letter or letme. swarm. 119,914.
to the drawin gs indetail, a
.1 has a plurality of letters and letter groups 2 printed about the periphery thereof. Radially inward from each of said letters or letter groups is an opening 3, preferably somewhat larger than the space occupied by the letters or letter groups 2. A second disk .4 is mounted in the rear of the disk 1 and has printed thereon aplurality of letters and letter roups 5 to register with the openings 3 in t e upper disk 1. The two disks are pivotally connected together by a rivet 6.
An arm 7 which may be of metal or stifl cardboard, is pivotally mounted in rear of,
the lower disk 4 and is held in position by means of a washer 8 which isheld in place by the rivet 6. The arm 7 has securely connected to theouter end thereof, as by means of rivets 9, a figure which is here represented as a clown, bearing in one hand a representation 10 of apaper covered hoop with the center portion 11 thereof cut out to represent a hole torn in said paper coveredhoo On the radially outward portion of said paper covered hoop, in a position to be in' alinement with the letters 2 on the periphery of the upper disk when positioned oppositely thereto, is printed the letter E. The arm 7 is pivotally movable about the disks 1 and 4 and the disks are relatively rotatable with respect to each other. By rotating the upper disk any of the letters or letter groups 2 on the periphery of the upper disk 1 may be i brought into register with the opening 11 and thereby into alinement with the letter By separately rotating the lowerdisk 4 any of the letters or letter groups 5 on the lower disk may be brought into register with the opening 3 adjacent the letter or letter group on the disk 1, which is in turn in register with the opening 11 in the clowns paper covered hoop.
When the parts are in the position indi cated in Figure 1, the Word Mine is spelled by the letter and letter groups which are in registering position. By moving the upper disk 1 one step in a clockwise position, the letter group ID on the upper disk wouldbe brought into register with the opening in the clowns paper covered hoop and then b moving the lower disk so as to bring the etter R? into register with the opening adjacent the letter group ID, the word Ride would be formed.
- The use of the device is not limited tothe letters or letter groups showrk since any group of letters ending in a nal e, or other desired final letter and forming pronounceable syllables would come within the 5 spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim: I A device of the character described, comprising a pair of disks superposed and relatively rotatable with respect to each other,
10 the upper of said disks having a plurality of letters about the periphery thereof, and
per of said disks when in're 'ster therewit M In testimony whereof I a x my signature.
