This invention relates to an improvement in typewriters and more particularly to a typebar and arrangement thereof, in which the typebar is provided with a head polygonal in cross section adapted to carry several different types on the surfaces thereof and is rotatable and telescopic, so that any types desired may be set in a 'position to strike against the platen at the proper type-- writing position, particulars of which will hereinafter appear; and the invention has for its object to provide an improved typewriter capable of being provided with several alphabets in different .languages in a'single machine and to lessen number of keys, which is very convenient to the user and simple Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a general plan view showing mainly parts of the typebar and arrangement thereof according Ato the 4present invention.

This invention relates to an improvement in typewriters, more particularly consists in the features of constructions and arrangement of typebars in typewriter, in which the typebar may be provided with a number of different types, and so that any desired one of these types may be positioned to strike against a proper point of the platen by imparting rotation and telescopic motion thereto. A typewriter as a complete set must, of course, be provided with a platen, carriage, spacer, paper feed, ribbon feed, back spacer and other necessary mechanisms, means and arrangements as well known, land these are not included in the present invention and may be of any suitable constructions. the invention itself will, therefore, be shown and. described, omitting the description'in connection with the other parts.
The typebar according to this invention consists of a head 1 polygonal in cross section, a stock thereof-2 and a supporting neck 1 extending from the head 1 and having a knob 5 serving as a stop. The typebar head kconnected a lever 11, the other end Now,

The typebar is inserted into a sleeve 3 by its stock 2. The sleeve 3 is of tubular shape with a closed end, from whichsend extends a stem 6 which is rotatably mounted in a bearer member 7, which is pivotally mounted in the upper part of each of a number of grooves formed in rows in the upper side of asupport member 8, which upper side is of arch shape. At the end extending outwardly from the bearer member 7 is fixed a counter yweight 9. The bearer member 7 is provided with an arm 10 whereby thebearer member 7 and accordingly the typebar may be swung towards the platen. To the outer end of the arm 10 is pivotally is bent upward and connected with a key 12, as is Well known.
On the surface of the sleeve 3 are formed two sprial grooves 13, and each sleeve is mounted in one of a number of grooves provided in rows on the upper side of an actuating member'14, which side is formed 'in arch shape as in the support member 8, the grooves 13 being engaged by pins 15 provided in opposite sides of the groove 14.
To permit removal of the sleeve 3 from the groove of the actuating member 14 when the typebar swings toward the platen, the sleeve 3 is grooved circumferentially from each of the points in the spiral grooves 13 where the pins 15 rest when the typebar lies at the proper swinging position, so as to form a path for` the pins 15, as shown at 16.
The actuating member 14 is provided with operating levers 26, at the outer end of which are secured handles 23, for purposes to move forwards or backwards the actuating member 14 to rotate the typebar, so as to direct any desired typeface towards'theplaten, but thls may be preferably replaced by an suitable means, such as a shift-key as wel known.

The shifting member is connecte to handles 24 and may` be moved forward or backwards by the. same, whereby the typebar may be moved forwards or backwards to bring Aany desired struck against the types to the proper position for ty writf ing. For the purpose of holding the ty r at its proper typewriting position in the sleeve 3, the stock 2 of thetypebar is provided with al leaf s ring 1 9 with a button 21 on the free and tliereof, which button engages with hole 22 at the sleeve 3 and serves as a stop. Acavity 2O is formed at the stock 2 so that the spring 19 may bend backwards to get out from the hole 22 when the typebar is forced forwards or backwards.
In operation, any desired type may be platen by rotating the typebar by the hand es 23, and moving forwards or backwards the saine by the hanf dles 24, and moreover by means of the key 12, as seen vfrom the above description.
The invention is not limited to the constructional form as above described and shown in the drawings, and various modifi.- cations and chan sma be made without departing from t e spirit and scope of the said invention.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In typewriters, a typebar formed in sections, one being in the form. of a sleeve, surrounding the other in telescopic but nonrotative relation, said sections being provided, the one with a series of holes arranged at intervals longitudinally, and the other with a spring detent engageable selectively in holes for determining selective lengt values for said typebar, means u n which said typebar is swingably mount/e and shift- -out said other section to one oi ing means engageable with said ltypebar when it assumes 'its position of .repose relative to its swinging movement for drawing l the selective positions determined by said holes and detent.
2. In typewriters, a typebar formed of relatively extensible sections, the one of which carries type on diierent sides thereof, means for rotating said sections to bringthe desired type to printing relation, including a sleeve, the saine comprising the other section and non-rotatable with respect to the `first section, said sleeve being provided with spiral grooves and an actuating member for rotating said sections movable axially of said sleeve and having pins fitting said grooves.

shifting means engageable with said type bar when it assumes a position of repose relative to its swinging movement for drawing out the type carrying section to one of the selective positions determined by said holes and detent.
