Application filed August 11, 1926. Serial No. 128,674.
This invention relates to improvements in co-pending application for headlight attachments, Serial No. 63,240, filed Jan. 23, 1926. i
The main object of the present invention is to provide attachments for headlights of the bullet type which will permit the radiation of lightlaterally to the roadsides and at the same time eliminate the direct rays to approaching drivers. I
More specifically, thev invention includes a detachable shell designed to be positioned within the conventional headlight of the type mentioned, which shell contains aplurality of vertical partitions for preventing the lateral diffusion of the light rays, the partitions also beingprovided with cutout portions for permitting the escape of-certain light rays through lateral ports in the walls of the lamps proper.
Reference will be had to the accompany ing drawings forming a part of this specification and wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views in which Fig. l is a side elevation showing a portion of a motor vehicle, in elevation, with the lamp attached and the method of projectng the light to thefront and side of the roa Fig. 2 is a top plan View of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through one of the lamps showing the shell with the partitions in position, the rays being directed through one of the lateral parts, and
Fig. 4 is a front view of the lamp cut in two on a horizontal plan with the halves separated showing the location of the ver tical partitions, the openings in the lower side and certain partitions with parts of them cut away to permit the unobstructed passage of the light F.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2; a motor vehicle is illustrated sufficiently to show the position of the lamps and the direction of the forward and lateral rays therefrom. In these figures reference characterAillustrates the radiator, B, the wheel, and C, the fender of a vehicle. The lamps are illustrated by reference character E and disclose forward beams of light G and lateral beams, F. The lamps, which-as heretofore statedare of the conventional bullet type, includes a lamp casing a, and a forward chamber 1;, which latter is adapted to contain the series of vertical partitions hereinafter described.
In the lamp chamber a, the globe is illustrated at d, and a reflector i, is positioned rearward thereof to project the-light through the lamp lens e. The shell b is provided'at one side with a lateral opening g, locatedsutficiently near the base from the lamp d tolbe approximately at the edge of the conventional road. i
It will be well to note here that inoutfitto permit the rays ting a motor vehicle with the present type of lamp, it is usually advisable to provide projected at points one lamp with the lateral opening 9 to the a right and another lamp with the lateral opening 9 to the left, whereby the raysfrom the lamp through the openings will be pro jected to each side of the road. In some instances it may be preferred to only equip the right-hand lamp with a righthand opening, observe only his side of the road. This selection of lamps, withthe respective openings, ismerely a matter of choice anddiscretlon with the operators; The lamp proper includes a casing a, in which is located the globe d and the reflector 2', which latter is positioned to the rear of the globe. The lens e is positioned sufficiently rearward of the outer peripheral edge of the lamp shell a to permit the arrangement of the threaded portion f, by means of which the forward body or the shell 6 is attached. The shell I) is of a generalcylindrical form gradually reduced at either end to present a neat appearance at the points of junction with the lamp a, and also at the forward end through which the rays are projected. Within the shell b are arranged a series of vertical partitions of various designs a suitably spaced and extending longitudinally from end to end of the shell body. These partitions prevent a lateral filtering of the rays and cause whereby the driver can a forward projection in a direct line and out (1 may filter through the lateral openings g, the partitions in that side of the shell 6 adjacent the openings are cut away, the cutout portions gradually increasing to accommodatethe gradually increasingrays from the lamp.
It will be noted that the vertical partitions in that half of the lamp adjacent the opening 9 are cut away as at h, each part-ition beginning at the one adjacent the center partition being gradually cut away to a greater extent to accommodate the en arged light area from the lamp through the open- Ille present invention is designed with the idea that same may be attached to the usual type of lamp, converting same into a bullet type of lamp, and also adding thereto the advantages of the protected forward rays and the lateral rays. In the event that the device is used as an attachment for the ordinary lamp, it will be obvious that same could be attached by utilizing a threaded ring which might be attached to the lamp body by any suitable means, the attachment being threaded thereto. In the event that an ordinary lamp is not converted into the present form, an entire lamp is manufactured as a unit, the sectional construction comprising a lamp chamber a and a shell b will permit the removal of the lens e for the arrangement of a new globe or for the adjustment of a reflector. If desired, the chamber a and the shell 12 could be made in one piece with the vertical partitions a re-a5 movable from the shell and the lens 0 held in place by any suitable means.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A lamp includin a body provided with a source of light an sion connected to the body outwardly of said lens, said shell extension having an opening in its wall, and partitions in said shell extension coinciding in len th with the latter, only such portions of t e partitions positioned in the line of travel of the light rays from their source to the lateral opening being cutaway in varying amounts, which progressively increase as they approach the said opening, to permit the passage of light through the opening.
2. A lamp including a body provided with a source of light, a shell extension connected to the forward end of the body, such shell extension having an opening in its wall and intermediate its ends, and partitions in said shell extension having their rear and front edges terminating on lines dis osed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the shell I extension, such portions of the partitions positioned in the line of travel of the light rays from their source to the o ening in the wall of the shell extension being cut away to permit the passage of light through the openlng.
In testimony whereofI aflix my signature.
