CANDLE LAMP.

This inventionhas for its object a candle lamp of the type embodying a follower resting on the upper end of the candle andforming a chimney or combustion chamber therefor, and has for its object a candle lamp which consists of a minimum number of parts including a follower and a candle construction by which the follower and particularly the well portion thereof is Centered relatively to the wick or burning portion of the candle and held centered and level during the burning of the candle.

The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinationsand constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views. a y Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of a candle lamp embodying my invention.

This candle lamp comprises generally, a candle, means for supporting the candle, a

follower in the general form of a sleeve en-.

closing the upper end of the candle and provided with an inwardly extending annular portion for resting on the margin of the top face of the candle and alsowith reentrant portions for entering into the top face of the candle around the central portion thereof and means'for supporting the candle.

It further includes a candle having a re duced central portion at its upper end and with sockets at the base of the central portion which coactwith the reentrant portions of the follower.

The means for supporting the candle, that is, the candle stick, comprises a sheet metal base portion 5 having an upwardly extending neck 6' which encloses an upright passage,

the upper edge of the neck being rolled over btion 19 thereof.

The candle is formed with a reduced portion 10 at its lower end which fits into the shank no portion 9 of the socket the end surface of the candle around this reduced portion 10 resting on the bottom of the wider portion of the cup or socket. This lower end surface of the candle is tapered slightly or in the form of a flat cone and the bottom of the cup or socket is similarly shaped.

11 designates the follower which is usually formed of glass, the follower being in the formof a sleeve having an inwardly extend ing annular flange 12 which rests upon the margin of the upper end face of the candle the cup or vand this flange is provided wit-h inwardly extending reentrant portions or prongs 13 complemental to the sockets 4 of the candle, although the flange 12 may be omitted. These prongs 13 are in effect overhanging projections on the interior of the sleeve or follower for entering depressions in the upper end of the candle 1. The follower 11 is also provided with an upwardly extending chimney or well portion 1 1 which preferably flares outwardly above the upper end of the candle. A cap 15 is detachably mounted on the upper end of the well portion 14, this cap being of glass and provided with a central opening 16. The periphery of the follower or sleeve 11 is preferably fluted as at 17 for facilitating the handle of the follower. Also, the candle is provided with small lengthwise flutes at 18 extending from below the upper slightly tapered end por- In operation. the interfitting prongs 13 and sockets 4 initially center the follower and insure an initial horizontal positioning of the follower and during the burning of the candle and the softening of the wax, these prongs form the depress ons as the candle shortens and continue to center and guide the follower.

Owing to the construction of the candle stick or base portion, the candle or the remnant thereof can be removed as a unit with the socket 8 and a new candle positioned in the socket before the socket is remounted in the base 5.

\Vhat I claim is:

1. In a candle lamp, the combination of a support for the candle, a follower in the form of a sleeve enclosing the upper end of the candle and having reentrant portions extending into the upper end face of the candle near the central portion of the candle and at points spaced apart from the periphery of the candle.

2. A candle lamp comprising a candle having notches formed in its upper face and spaced equidistant from the center of the candle the notches being located near the central portion of the candle and at points spaced apart from the eriphery of the candle, a follower mounted on the up or end of the candle in the form of a sleeve having prongs for entering into the notches of the candle. 4

A candle lamp comprising a candle having a central reduced portion at its upper end and with a socketat the base of the reduced portion, a support for the candle and a follower mounted on the upper end of the candle provided with an overhanging inwardly extending projection for entering the socket. 1
