METHOD OF PRODUCING TYPE 03 TYPE BLOCKS.
Application filed December 1, 1926,8eria1 170. 152,088, and in Germany December 4, .1928.
My invention relates to a method of producing type or type blocks, and more particularly t pe whee s and type cylmders wlth raised c meters on their peripheries such as are used in calculatingh machines, ty ewriters, printing telegra Such type should be capa le of produc1ng a great number of impressions wlthout showing any appreciable signs of wear. The manufacture of such type oifers great diiiiculties in so far as it was up tonow imposslble to produce a sharp, clearly defined type of great strength. Die-casting and slmllar -methods present means for reproduclng all the fineness'of the punch or die and the matrix produced from it in the iimshed block, but the type metal employed in these processes is comparatively soft, so that the type produced in this 'way doesnot comply with the requirement in regard to the life of the type,
The method aceord'ingto my mventlon eliminates the disadvantages existinfiin the type blocks as manufactured by the itherto known processes.
I attain this end in view by manufacturing the type as die-casting, by spraying the type metal cold (Schoop or Metallsator process) into the mold or by electrodepositlng so it in the mold and then subjecting it to pressure by rolling, compressing or similarly treating. it, so t a denser and its durability is increased thereby.
36 i My invention is illustrated in the accom-- panying drawing which represents indiegrammatic fashion and in sect1onal elevation an example how my novel method may be carried out.
Referring to this drawing, 1 represents a container heated by the burners 2, 3 whlch contains the molten metal. The metal is conducted in liquid state by way of the con- 'duits 4, 5 and-.6 to the sprayin nozzles 7 and 8. The pressure necessary or conveying the metal is furnished by an air pump 9, which delivers compressed air by way of .conduit 10 and branc 11 into the portion 12 of container 1, so that pressure is exerted so on the molten body of metal.
Adjacent to the nozzles 7 and8 are placed respectivelythe atomizing nozzles 13 and 14, both of which are connected by way of conduits 16 and 15 to the air conduit 10. The
s and the li e.
t its structure becomes;
contains the matrix 17 on this periphery.
When the type cylinder 24 has attained the desired thickness, the spraying is discontinued and the densi ing or condensing of the metal occurs, or ,this purpose an operating means, such for instance as a hand wheel 22 mounted on a threaded spindle 23 15 provided which carries at its lower end an expansion none 21, whose lar est diam: eter is greater than the inner'diameter of the sprayed cylinder 24. This cone 21 is forced through the cylinder 24, whereby it tends to expand the latter, thereby com ressing or densifying the metal of cylin er 24 to the desired de ee.
.To produce prmtin forms under a plication of pressure is fiready known, ut in these processes the metal is either forced in the cold state into the mold or is cast into the mold and then subjected to pressure. Althou h these processes cause a certain strengt enin of the structure of the typ e metal, not a the requirements can be complied'with which must be expected of good type, because by either .a compressin or a' castmg process alone it is not bring out all the fine Only the combination 0 the'two rocesses viz the introduction of the material in a state of fine division into the mold and the sub sequent application of pressure and conposs1 1e to densation of the material produces a.- type oints of the die. 7
which fulfills all requirements which can possibly be made upon 1t.
Various modifications and changes may espirit be made without departing from t and the S00 e of the invention, and I desire,
therefore t at only such limitations shall be placed thereon as are imposed by the prior art. I
I claim as my invention--:--
1. The method of producing type blocks,
which consists in introducing the ty e material in a state of fine division into the mold and applying pressure to it, for the purpose of increasing the density of the'strncture of the type metal and thus the durability of the ty lple.
2. e method of producing type cylinders with raised characters on the pe- EDUARD MARE! m MARCHTHAL
