POWER HAMMER,
Application filed September 13, 1926. Serial Ne. 135,137.
Power hammers are ordinarly provided with guides which guide' the head in its movement. Parts' of these guides, particularly that'` part ofthe guide which Controls the head at the moment of impact is subject to severe wear and severe strains. The present invention be designed to provide a be made removable and is of such length thatit is uncovered with the hammer in its extreme upper position so that the renewals may be made of these guideparts without i taking down the hammer as a. whole. Fea tures and details of the invention will appear from the specification and claims.
, The invention is llustrated in the accom an in drawin s as follows:
Fi g. 1 shows a side elevation of a hammer;
Fig. 2 a face of one of the guide posts forming a part of the frame of the hammer.
Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 in Fig. '1.
Fig. 4 a section on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 a side View of the removable guide member 'detached 1- marks the base ofthe hammer, 2 the guide posts, 3 the cap, 4 board' actuating rolls, 5 gears driving the rolls 4, 6 'a gear Operating the gears 5, 7 drive pulleys, and 8 boards operated by the rolls 4, and 9 the hammer head. As shown these parts are such as are common in what is known as a board hammer but it will` be understood that this is merely an exemplification of the mechanism for actuating the head and the nvention is applicable to any type of drop` power hammer. i
Head guides Q are formedon the faces of the posts 2 and operate in one of the guide grooves 10 in the sides of the head. The
guides Q are extended by means'of .removable guide blocks 11 which are arranged in sockets 12 in the faces of the posts`2. The
y blocks preferably have a plural set of guide ribs on the-ir faces which engage the walls 'of the grooves 10 in the head while the guide groove 2 on the past is simply a single guide rib. This, however, is simply as a matter of economy as the single rib for the upper or idling part ofthe travel of the head is ample for guidingthe head in this part of its travel while the plural guide ribs of the lower working part of the guide receive the shock and control the side movement of I the hammer head.
The blocks 11 are provided with the un- OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA AssIGNoR "ro ERIE roiirNnBY con:- i
block is securely clamped 'in the socket so as to holdit in place underthe severe strains to which it is subjected.
When it is desired to renew the removable' guide portons may be then the removable gnideblocks the head is drawn up to apo sition above the removable guide parts' and' readilyremoved and renewed without taking down any' other part ofthe hammer I Further the lower parts of the guides ,re-
ceive the real wear and strain in operation.
and by making these parts removable they may' be 'formed, if desired,rof a different I metal than that of the part Q so as to better sustain 'the wear and strainof the lower part ofthe travel. y 5 i i i s -What I claim as new isz I 11. In a hammer, the combination of guide i posts; a' head; means j actuating the head;
and a head guide on the post having its -v lower marking part removable, said removable part being uncoveredby the head wth in the limits of its travel. 1
2. Ina hammer, the combination of guide i posts having upper head guides thereon and guide sockets therein; removable' lower working head guides in thesockets an'd'ex tending guides on the posts; means securing the 'removable guides in the sockets; and a head Operating in said guides and uncovering the lower removable Darts of said guides within 'the limits of its travel.
3 In a hammer, .the combination of guide posts having single ribbe-d upper guides in the faces of the posts; removable .lower working guides in continuation of the upper guides on the posts, said removable working guides having a plurality of 'guiding ribs; i
a head Operating in said guides and un-.
covering the removable working guidesfwithv in the limits of its travel; andvmeans actuating the head. i
In testimony whereof `I have herennto.
set my hand.
