In oil burning locomotives the proper supply of fuel can be most accurately determined by the fireman observing the density of the smoke from the fuel in its passage through the smoke stack. The smoke not easily observable during the night time, and therefore it may be considered the object of this invention to provido'a means whereby rays of light will be directed toward the smoke stack so that the fireman can observe the density of the smoke coming therefrom,

. ith the above objects in view and others which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and operative association of parts such is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form part of this application.

An oil burning locomotive is indicated by the numeral 1 in Figure 1 of the drawings, the smoke stack therefor by the numeral 2 and the headlamp by the numeral 3.
In carrying out my invention I rivet or otherwise secure on the top of the head-,
lamp casing outwardly directed arms 4 Two parallel arms are employed.
A mirror or like reflector is indicated by the numeral 5. The reflector is'preferably of a rectangular shape and has secured ad I jacen't to its ends sectional brackets. The
brackets each comprise plates having hooked outer'ends 6 and their inner ends inwardly flanged. Passing through the flanges 7 of the said'plates there are adjustable securing means 8. The lower plates on the inner faces thereof have riveted or otherwise socurcd thereto angle brackets '9 and the outer flanges of these brackets are disposed against the inner faces of the arms 4-. Passing through the said long gitu dinal arms of the brackets 9 and through suitable openings in the arms 4 there are bolt memberslO which are engaged by wing nuts 11. By such arrangement itwill be seen that the reflector 5 may be adjustably supported on the fixed arms 4 so that the reflector maybe arranged at desired and proper angles to have the upper rays of light from the'headlamp 3,
' directed thcreagainst. The light rays are rc-- flected at an upward angle toward the smoke stack 2 0 that the fireman can readily observe the density of smoke emitted through the stack.
It is, of course, to be understood that the mirror can be arranged at any desired point with respect to the smoke stack of the 'loco motive in a position to be best observed by the engineer or fireman.
Also this device is to be used on stokered fired locomotives and would occasion a saving in fuel in coal burning districts.
Having described the inventioml claim:
An attachment for a locomotive headlamp comprising spaced parallcl arms mounted in horizontal position upon the top of the locomotive headlamp, angular mcm bers disposed against the forward ends of, said arms, bracket members rigidly secured to said angular members, other bracket members arranged adjacent said first named bracket members, a. mirror-engaged bctweea the first and second named bracket members and means for adjusting said first and eccond named bracket members toward each other for securely clamping and holding mirrors of different sizes, and means for adjustably pivotally mounting said angular membersupon the forward ends of said arms whereby the mirror may be adjusted to receive light from the headlamp and to reflect said light upon the smoke issuing from the smoke stack of-the locomotive.
