IEZEIYFEDPLAE CARD, NUT 6UP, AND RALLY GARE,
This invention relates to improvements in combined place cards, nut cups, and tally cards Ordinary place cards, nut cups and tally cards are made up separately, and in con sequence the expense to the ultimate con sumer is much higher than is the case where all three articles can be supplied unitarily. I am aware of the fact that attempts have heretofore been made to combine a place card and tally card into one item or a place card and nut cup into one item, lln no instance to my knowledge, however has the structure of any such article been such as to make possible or practicable the combina tion of all three of the features above men= tioneda It is the object oi this invention to provide in novel and simple unitary form a device for the three separate purposes above mentioned More particularly stated it is my purpose to provide a device which may be cut from a single sheet of cardboard or heavy paper and it lded to comprise uni-: tarily a structure for the three separate i unc= tions of place card nut cup, and tally card, the tally card portion of the device being so organized with the rest of the structure as to enhance its ornamental appearance while being readily severable there'iromi lit is particularly important to this invention that the structure as a whole is self support ing and the tally card portion of the device is located at the rear, bein held erect and also being adapted to contri ute to the rigid ity of support of the rest of the structure.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device in which the members which form the side walls of thenut cup are folded rearwardly and interlocked either with each other or with some rigid portion of the device, theiree ends of such side por= tions being in either event concealed from view immediately at the rear of the upstanding place card and tally card portion,
, lln the drawings:
- permit the band portion Figure l is a plan view' of a blank em= bodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the device completely'formed from such blank Figure 3 is a rear view of the device showncin Figure 2a Figure t shows a blank for forming a modified embodiment of the invention,
Figure 5 is a front elevation of such moditied embodiment,
Figure 6 is a rear elevation oil the device shown in Figure 5n Like parts are identified by the same re1ierence characters throughout the several VHBWSU In describing the blanks from which these various embodiments of m invention are formed, it will refer to their difiterent portions with reference to the function performed thereby in the completed article.
In the constructions shown in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, the blank includes a front and side wall band 10, a cup bottom ll, a rear wall 12, and a decorative name-bearing portion 13. The blank being cut to the indi= cated outline, it is readily formed or shaped to a complete article by foldingthe band portion 10 at right angles to-the base 11 upon the line indicated at 15, by folding the rear wall 12 upwardly at right angles to the base upon the fold line 16, and by curving the ends 17 of band portion 10 rearwardly upon the base and interlocking their slots 18 with the complementary slots 19 oil the rear wall anchorajge member ra a It wil be noted that the connection. be tween the band portion 10 and the base is comparatively short, its length is such as to to be formed rearg5 wardly in a graceful curve. A certain degree of rigidity between the band portion and base at this point causes the band portion to curve in, a wider arc than would be the case if line 15 were shorter. It thereby enables the band portion to conform in an ap proximate way to the outline of the base,
till
I On the other hand, if the line 15 were longer line 15, since in this device the front Wall is h the ends of the band portion would have to be bent too sharply in order to stay within the outline of the base 11. p
The fact that the extremities 17 of the side wall band portion 10 of the device are anchored to a comparatively rigid member 12 instead of being connected to each other, operates to give added strength to the structure, and at the same time their curvature is such that their extremities are carried behind the rear wall 12 and are inconspicuous. In the construction hereinafter to be described the ends of the band portion are secured to each other, but this is done in such a way that the are braced and reinforced by the rear wal portion of the structure and the ends are likewise concealed from view.
It is important to note that the namebearing decorative card 13 is at the rear of the nut cup formed by base 11, wall band 10 and rear wall 12. If it were at the front it could not be made sufliciently high to be serviceable as a tally card without destroying the utility of the nut cup and its decorative appearance.
It will be noted that the portion 13 of the structure is defined by a score line at 20 whereby it is readily separable from the rest of the device. Its back is provided with markings at 21 rendering it suitable for use as a tally for use in recording scores at card games. 1
When the structure is assembled it functions, first, as a place card, due to the fact that it carries an individual name at 22 upon its front. Secondly, it functions as a nut cup, the wall portions 10 and 12 being adapted to retain nuts upon the base 11. Thirdly, it functions as a tally card, the portion 13 of the structure being readily severable along score line 20 from the rest of the device.
The construction shown in Figures 4, 5, and 6 has similar advantages to those above mentioned. It is adapted, however, to form a rectangular nut cup instead of a rounded one.
The band portion 110, base 111, rear wall 112, and tally card portion 113 correspond generally in function to the similar parts of the first described structure. Since the nut cup is rectangular, however, the band portion 110 is divided by vertical score lines into a well defined front wall 25, side walls 26 and extremities 117. The score line 115 is relatively elongated as compared with score not curved.
The rear wall 112 and tally card portion 113 are adapted to be folded upwardly upon score line 116, whereby the band portion 110 may likewise be folded upwardly u onscore line 115 and the side walls may be cut rearwardly along the sides of the base to permit the extremities 117 to be interlocked with each other by means of notches 118 and 119. This interlocking 0f the extremities takes place immediately behind the rear wall portion 112, which thereby provides a double thickness at the rear and reinforces the union between the extremities 117 of the side band portion.
As before, the tally portion 113 is made to be readily separable from the nut cup by means of a score line at 120 and is provided at 121 with a bridge tally designation upon its rear face. The name of the guest may appear either-on the bridge tall member 113 or upon the front wall 25 of and portion 110, where it is shown at 122.
It will be noted that in both of these devices the connection between the sides of the nut cup is established at the rear and operates to reinforce and support in an erect position the upstanding tally card portion of the structure. If such tally card portion were not at the rear it would obstruct the use of the nut cup and in addition would, .not be as decorative as it is in the indicated location.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising unitarily a blank includin a bottom, a side band portion connecte to said bottom at its front margin, a rear wall portion connected to said bottom at its rear margin, extremities on said side band portion projecting to the rear of said rear wall .and interlocked thereabout, and a tall card provided on its rear. face with suitab e designations adapting it to serve as a tally and severably connected on a weakened line of 'support with said rear wall and projecting upwardly therefrom.
2. A device of the character described comprising a blank having a side band portion integrally connected to a bottom portion along a relatively short fold line, whereby said side band portion is adapted to be curved rearwardly without corners, a rear wall portion connected to said bottom portion and provided with spaced vertical slots, slotted extremities on said side band portion interlocked with the slots of said rear wall portion, and a tally card severably connected with said rear wall portion and supported upright thereon.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base having a rear wall projecting upwardly therefrom, side walls aving portions interlocked with and projecting beyond said rear wall at the rear side thereof, and a severable tab supported along a weakened line and projecting integrally from said rear wall above said base, said tab having a decorated front face exposed toward said base and having a rear face provided with a marking adapting it to.
serve as a tally when severed.
4:. A device of the character described, comprising a base, and walls, formed inte- 5 gral with the base, extending upward from the base and interlocked to form with the base a receptacle open at the top, the rear wall of said receptacle having a detachable tab, connected along tab being independent of the tween the walls and the base,
upward above a weakened line, said connections be- 0 which projects the receptacle and has its face adapting it to serve a s a tally.
