This invention rclates'to apparatus for use in the continuous rolling of sheet bars, light plates or slabs into sheets oi desircd'gauge, and the object of the improvement is to provide a doubling apparatus for use for example in carrying out a continuous sheet rolling method in which sheet bars, light plates or slabs are heated and-passed continuously through-a series of roughing mills being matched or piled once twice or more depending uponthe gauge of sheets to be rolled, the pieces being then reheated and automati cally doubled it sheets under 22 gauge are desired, and then continuously passed through finishing rolls through-side and end shearing apparatus, then through a continuous annealing furnace and-finally through sheet levelling and opening mechanism and onto a cooling table; each succeeding stand of rolls throughout the train being operated at a higher-speed than the preceding rolls-in order to accommodate the increasing length of the bars or sheets as they are 'pa'ssed through each stand.

The upper roll'61 of this stand is'preferably of larger'diaimeter than the lower roll in order to flatten the forward end of the heated pack as it is well known that there is a tendency for this forward end of the pack to bend or curve upward as it emerges from the furnace. The pack is then conveyed through a series of alternate edge straightening rolls 62 and finishing rolls 63, each edge straightening roll being considerably smaller in diameter move the pack from "the doubler and upon 1 than the finishing rolls and being smaller at its center than at its ends so that the edges of the pack will be rolled down Without striking the center oi the pack and tak ing out the form of the precedingmolls, thus'placmg the pack in the next stand of finishing rolls as near to its originalcondi ,tion as possibleand without breaking the pack open.
