SAFETY GUARD.

This invention relates to a guard for a cross cut saw, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby the guard will automatically cover the saw when the saw has been moved to the front of the apparatus, the weight on the saw operating means for lifting the guard when the saw is in its inoperative position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, il- I lustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which c Figure 1 is an elevation showing the guard in lowered position.

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the parts at the rear end of the guard.
In these views, 1 indicates the saw table which includes a slide for the bearing blocks 2 for the saw arbor 3, the saw being shown at 4. A lever 5 is pivoted to one of the blocks 2 at its upper end and is pivotally connected to a part of the table at its lower end, as shown at 6. A weighted arm 7 is fastened to this lever and acts to hold the parts with the saw in its rear and inoperative position. The foot lever 8 is pivotally connected with a part of the frame, as shown at 9, and a link 10 connects the lever with the lever 5 so that when the foot lever is de-,
pressed, it will swing the parts forwardly, as shown in Figure 1, so that the saw will cut a log or other object placed on the table.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a casing 11 which is carried by a pair ofarms 12, these arms having their rear ends provided with depending portions which are pivoted to a support 13 fastened to the table. These parts are so arranged. that the casing will normally assume a position over the saw,

when the same is in its forward position, under the action of gravity. The front end of the casing is provided with a strip 14 of rubber or the like which will engage the front end of the table. A rearwardly extending arm 15 is fastened to one of the arms 12 and carries a weight 16 which acts to counterbalance the casing 11. A bell crank 17 is pivoted to the rear part of the table and a link 18 connects said bell crank with an arm 19 which is connected with one of the arms 12. An L-shaped arm 20 is pivoted to the bell crank lever and extends downwardly, with its short part extending under the table, where it is provided with a roller 21 which will be engaged by the weight 22 of the arm 7 when the saw is in its rearward and inoperative position. Thus the weight, acting on the roller 21, will depress the member 20 and cause the bell crank to move the link to the rear and raise the casing 11, as shown in Figure 2, so that a log or other object can be placed on the table in the path of the saw. Then when the foot lever is, depressed to move the saw forwardly to cut the log, the weight 22, movin off the roll 21, will permit the casing 11 to rop and cover the saw.
A small roller 23, carried by the arms 24 at the rear of the table, guides the member 20 in its vertical movement.
Thus I have provided simple means for guarding a saw so that there is no danger of the operator being injured by placing a part of his body in the path of the saw, during the sawing operation.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction andin the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In combination with a cross cut saw including its table, a Weight for holding the saw normally at-the rear ofthe table and the pedal lever for moving the saw to the front of the table, a guard casing, arms connected ed from the top of the table, the casing normally covering the front end of the path of the saw, a bell crank pivoted to the table at the rear thereof, a link connecting one arm of the bell crank with a part on the rear of one of the arms, 9.- depending member pivoted to the other arm of the bell crank and having a part extending under the table and a roller on said part engaged by the Weight In testimony whereof I afliX my signature JAMES WOLF.
