Divided and this application filed May .19, 1925. Serial No. 31,882. i
. This invention has for its object to provide improved means for applying, and for controlling the application of the power of a continuously running electric or other motor to mechanism intermittently driven thereby. While capable of many other uses, the invention is particularly applicable to machines I for Wrapping annular objects (such as automobile tires, coils of wire, etc.)
of the type disclosed in my Letters Patent No. 1,542,474 issued June 16, 1925, of which this caseis a division. I g I The more particular objects of the invention,- togetherwith means whereby the same may be carried into effect, will best be understood from the following description of one form or, embodiment thereof illustrated inthe accompanying drawings. It will be understood, however, that the particular construction and arrangement described and'shown has been chosen for illustrative purposes merely, and that the invention, as defined by the claims hereunto appended, may be otherwise practised withoutdeparture from its spirit and scope.
v In said drawings;
Fig.1 is a front elevation of the complete machine. i
1 'Fig. 2- is a side elevation, looking from the right in Fig. 1.
The frame'of the machine herein shown comprises a base 15 and a yoke 16, which pivotally mounted on a shaft '17, journalled in an upright 18 rising from the base 15. The yoke 16;i s providedwith guide rollers 19 for an annular shuttle 20', which is'rotated by a driving memberin theform of a friction disk 21 secured to the shaft 17' and driven through connections hereinafter morefully'described from an electric motor 23. The tire or other work W to be wrapped is held by a weightedjroll'er 14 upon work'supporting rollers 24 which are driven though suitable connections from the driving member 21, the arrangement being such that the work W will be turned relatively slowly with respect to the speed of rotation of the shuttle 20. Said shuttle is formed with a hinged segment 26 normally closing a gap through which the Work W may be inserted, while the yoke 16 may be adjusted about the axis of the shaft 17 to center the shuttle 20 with respect to annular objects of different sizes, said yoke being counterbalanced by a spring 27 and being locked in adjusted position by means of a clamp 28 carried by an upright29 rising from the base 15. g
The-wrapping material, preferably in the form of a continuousstrip S of paper, is supplied from a roll 30 supported by a reel or spindle 31 carried by the yoke 16. Said. paper passes from the roll 30 over a guide plate 34 to the shuttle 20 which is provided with an annular fiange35 about which the strip S is wrapped as the shuttle is rotated and from which said strip is led to the work l/V. Between the shuttle and the source of supply 30, there is provided a cutting mechanism comprising a knife 37 cooperating with a portion of the guide plate 34 to sever the strip S, when a sufficient length thereof has been wound around the shuttle flange 35 to complete the wrapping of the work W. The knife 37 is automatically actuated, after a predetermined number of'rotations of the shuttle, by a counting mechanism 38 actuated at each rotation ofsaidshuttle by a cam projection 39 thereon, said counting mechanism being manually adjustable in accordance with the size of the articles wrapped. V
' From-the foregoing, the nature, location, and function of the parts referred to. will be sufliciently.underst'oodfor the purposes of the present case. With the exception of those hereinafter described, and in so far as the others enter into combination therewith, as pointed out in the claims, these parts are not involved in the present invention andmay be of any suitable construction and arrangement. v
The disk or driving member 21 is driven by frictional engagement therewith of a friction wheel 40 on the shaft 41 of the motor 23. The said motor is carried by a frame 42 which normally rests by gravity on the top of the base 15, in which position the friction wheel is out of engagement with the driving member or disk 21. In order to connect these parts to start the machine, the frame 42 and the motor 28 are'moved or lifted bodily so as to bring said wheel 40 into engagement with the disk 21. To this end the following connections are provided:
The base 15 has secured thereto a plate 43 having depending ears 44 which extend downwardly through an opening in the top of said base. Journalled in the cars 44 is a shaft 45 having secured thereto arms 46, the opposite ends of which are pivoted at 47 to depending ears 48 formed on the motor frame 42; Between the lower ends of the depending ears 44 and 48 are link connections 49 forming, with the arms 4i; and ears 44' and 48, a parallel link motion, whereby when the shaft 45 is oscillated a vertical movement is imparted to the motor frame 42 substantially in a straight line. The shaft 45 has secured thereto a third arm 50, which, with said shaft and the arms 46 thereon, constitutes a lifting lever for the motor, The forward end of the lever 50 is connected by links 51 with the lower end of a starting or actuating lever 52 pivoted at 53 and having at its upper end a handle 54 by which saidactuating levermay be moved about its pivot 53 to cause the motor 23 to be lifted until the friction wheel 40 is brought into frictional engagement with the driving wheel 21, thereby causing the rotation of the shaft 17. The arms 46 and 50 and the shaft 45 form, in effect, a bell crank lever pivoted intermediate its ends, it being obvious that the longer arm 50 of the lever might be in alinement with the shorter arms 46 but is offset therefrom as shown in the drawings, for convenience in operating the machine.
As shown in the drawings, the motor 23 is in raised position with the friction wheel 40 thereof contacting with the driving wheel 21, and the links 51 are in alineinent with the actuatinglever 52, thereby preventing thelowering of said motor 23 and thus causing the machine tobe operated until the handle 54 is moved to the right in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thus breaking the toggle connection 51, 52 and permitting the motor 23 to return to its normal lowered position i i by gravity.
The pivot 58 for the actuating lever 52 is eccentrically mounted in the' bearing 55 and has secured to one end thereof a. quadrant 56 having a slot 5'7 therein through which a clamping bolt 58 is adapted to extend into the bearing 55 to lock the eccentric pivot 53 in adjusted position.
By means of this construction the pivot for the actuating lever 52 may be nicely adjusted so that in the lifting of the motor 28 the alinement of the actuating lever 52 and the toggle links 51 will be assured as be driven, said mechanism havinga driving member, ofa motor, a friction wheelcarried. thereby and normally removed from said driving member, an arm pivoted intermedi- .ate its ends and having one end pivotally connected to the supporting frame of said motor, a pivoted actuating lever, anda toggle link connecting said actuating lever with the opposite end of said arm. c
2. The combination with mechanism to be driven, said mechanism having a revoluble" driving member, of a motor, a revoluble friction wheel carried thereby and fnormally removed from said driving member, an arm pivoted intermediate its ends and having one end pivotallyconnected to the supporting frame of said motor, a pivoted actuating lever connected to the opopsite end of said arm, and means wherebythe position of the lever pivot may be adjusted.
The combination with mechanism to be driven, said mechanism having a revoluble driving member, of a motor, a revoluble friction Wheel carried thereby and normally removed from said driving member, an arm pivoted intermediate its ends and'having one end pivotally connected to the supporting frame of said motor, a pivoted actuating lever connected to the opposite end of said arm, and means for insuring the parallelism of the several positions of the axis" of the motor while being lifted.
4. The combination with mechanism to be driven, said mechanism having a revoluble driving member, of a motor, a revoluble friction wheel carried thereby and normally removed from said driving membelyan arm pivoted intermediate its ends and having one end pivotally connected to the supporting frame of said motor to lift the same and cause said frictionwheel to engage said driving member, and a link mechanism for insuring the parallelism of the several posi-. tions of the axis of the motor While being lifted. I v
5. The combination with mechanism to be Hill driven, said mechanism havinga revoluble driving member, of a motor, a revoluble fricadjusting the position of the lever pivot, a slotted quadrant on said eccentric, and a clamping bolt cooperating with said quad- 10 rant: to lock said eccentric.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GEORGE W. PROUTY.
