Application filed August 25, 1927. Serial No. 215,446.
This invention. relates to improvements in car stakes and more particularly to side folding car stakes for fiat and gondola railway cars. 1
The primary object of the invention is to provide a side folding car stake which is extremely simple and durable in construc tion as well as eificient in use. J
Another objectis to provide an improved side folding car stake embodying simple and eflicient means for releasably maintaining the same in operative position.
A further object is to provide an improved side folding car stake of the above kind having simple and efficient means whereby the load binding chain may be readily adjusted to the height of the load.
Other objects will become apparent as.
the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate correspondingpart-s throughout the several views, I
Figure 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal section of a gondola car equipped with a side folding stake constructed in accordance with the present invention, the stake being in operative position and shown in side elevation as seen looking toward the inner side thereof;
Figure 2 is a view looking toward the left of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a horizontal section on line 83 of Figure 1;
Figure at is a vertical section on line H of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1 of a modified form of stake constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 6 is a view looking toward the left of Figure 5; and
Figure 7 is a horizontal section on line 7-7 of Figure 6.
The form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 4: inclusive embodies a stake member 6' adapted to be vertically positioned at the inner side of the side wall 14 of thecar for projecting above the upper edge of the latter when operatively positioned, and this stake member 6 is in the form of an open ended rigid metallic tube of rectangular cross-section as shown clearly in Figure 3.
Provided in the inner side wall of the stake section 6* and extending from the upper end of the stake member to a point ad iacent the upper edge of the wall 14 of the car is a longitudinal elongated slot 16 in which is slidably fitted an H-shaped slide block 17 a to which is attached one end of a load binding chain 18 This load binding-chain is adapted tobe connected to a slide block of a similar, opposed stake mounted upon the other side of the car, and as the slide blocks are freely movable in a vertical direction, the load binding chain 18 may be. readily adjusted to the height of the load.. In order that the slide block 17 may be prevented from accidentally passing out of the upper end of the slot 16, the
upper end of-the latter is preferably closed by means of a plate P secured upon the iune'inwall of the stake member and extending across the upper end of. the slot as shown clearly in Figure 1.
, The Stake member 6 is attached to the sidewall 14: of the car by means of a pivot bolt B which passesthrough opposed vertically elongated slots S provided in the lower end of the stake member 6 In this way, the stake is attached to the side of the car so as to permit the stake member to be raised and lowered and to be swung parallel with the side of the car. Thus, by
raising the stake member 6,the lower end of the latter may be disengaged from the socket member M on the bottom or floor F of the car so that said stake member may be subsequently swung parallel with the side of the car downwardly to a substantially horizontal folded position. When thus folded, the stake member will be out of the way as desired when not in use. On the other handwhen the stake is desired for use, it may be readily swung upwardly to a vertical position and then lowered while vertically disposedso that the squared lower end of the stake member 6 is brought into flat engagement with the fioor within the socket member M, whereby the stake member is effectively maintained in its vertical operative position. Hooks 31 are pivoted to the sides of the stake member 6 for detachable engagement with the side wall 14" of the car member 6 is pivotally mounted for swinging from operative to inoperative position, and vice versa, by being pivotally mounted at its lower end between the spaced upstanding walls of a U-shaped bracket 30 rigidly secured upon the floor F of the car at the inner side of the wall 14 of the latter, the outwardly projecting hooks 81'being pivoted to the sides of the stake member 6 and engageable over the upper edge of the wall 14* of the car, whereby the stake member 6 is held to the car wall 14 and retained in vertical operative position. As shown, the upstanding walls of the bracket 30 support a transverse horizontal pivot bolt B upon which the lower end of the stake member 6 is hinged so that said stake member may be swung in a plane parallel with the side of the car to a vertical operative or a horizontal inoperative position. Naturally, the hooks 31 are swung upwardly out of engz-igement with the car wall 14* in order to permit the stake member 6 to be swung downwardly'to its inoperative horizontal position. Further, the bolts 13 of both forms of the invention may be equipped with nuts 32 that may be tightened, if desired, to retain the stake member in either of its positions. Otherwise, the form of the invention shown in Figures 5 to 7 inclusive is similar to that of Figures 1 to 4 inclusive int-hat the inner Wall 6 has the elongated longitudinal slot 16, in which the slide block 17 is slidably mounted, the load binding chain 18 being attached to this slide block, and the latter being prevented from passing out of the upper end of the slot 16 by means of the plate 1 From the foregoing description it is believed that the construction and operation as well as the advantages of the present invention will be readilyunderstood and appreciated by those skilled in the art;
Minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope otthe invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is 1. In a car stake, a hollow stake member of rectangular cross-section adapted. to be mounted at aside of the car and to assume a raised vertical operative position, said stake member having a longitudinal elongated slot in the inner wall thereof, an H- shaped slide block slidably fitted in said slot for vertical adjustment relative to the stake member, a load binding chain attached to said slide block, and means to hold said stake member in its raised oper'ativepost tion.
2. In a car stake, a hollow stake member of rectangular cross-section adapted to bemounted at a side of the car and vto assume a raised vertical operative position, said stake member having a longitudinal elongated slot in the inner'wall thereof, an H- shaped slide block slidably fitted in said slot for vertical adjustment relative to the stake member, a load binding chain attached to said slide block, means tohold said stake member in its raised operative position, and hooks pivoted to the sides of the'stakememher and engageable with the side wall 01' the car to hold the stake member against inward strains. y
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
