Then it is desirable to place other indicating marks upon the board besides those which are provided on the stamps, a crayon 32 is used. This crayon is carried in a sleeve 33and may b'e pressed downwardly against the action' of a spring 24 by a plunger 35.
The plunger is depressed by the finger 22 and this finger may be locked in its engaged position with the plunger 35 by being moved into the catch or lock member 31. In operation ofthe present invention the structure is first assembled as shown in the drawings and the various stamps are made with desired classification marks, as for eX- ample, 1 Shop, 2`Shop, l and 2 Clear, C Select, and D Select. The inspector then takes the device and walksy along the lumber to be inspected. After determining the grade of the lumber he then rests the footplate 30 against the plain surface of the board and'quickly turns the handle 26 so that one of the fingers 22 or 23 is in register with a desired plunger 19 of one of the stamping devices l1. Downward pressure is tlienapplied to the handle 26,and this downward movement will of course be imparted to the selected plunger so that the desired classification mark will beprinted upon the surface of the board.
In the event that the board is to be ripped or is to be designated by some other mark than the printed indicia of the stamps, the handle 26 is rotated until the finger 22 is above the crayon plunger 35, after which the handle 26 is pressed down until the finger 22 engages'under the lip 38 of the lock member 31. VThis will then hold the handle rigidly and will permit the inspector to manipulate the entirestructure softhat the crayon 32 may be usedto mark upon the board.
