This invention relates to improvements in roller yside bearings.
An object of thisinvention is to provide an efficient roller side vbearing especially l adapted for railway ears and wherein the anti-friction `elen'ient is automatically centered whe-nrelievedl of load.
More specifically, the-object of my invention is to provide an anti-friction bearing adapted for attachment toa truck bolster of' a railway car and wherein are employed an anti-friction roller,` and pendulums so ar-` ranged that whenthe roller has been-moved to' either side of its normal central position, the pendulums will automatically vreturn the the roller to central position.

In said drawing, denotes the lower portion oa body bolster` and 11 the upper portion of a correspondingopposed truck bolster. "The #improved bearing yis shown appl-iedtothe truoklbolster and comprises,
broadly, a retainingv member' or housing A;
an Vanti-friction 4element B; and pendulums C.
The housingr or retaining member A is more or less boxlike in form, open at the top and bottom thereof, the same having opposed side walls 12 and curved end walls 13. Flanges 14 are provided at the upper ends of the sides 12, these anges extending inwardly toward one another. Lugs or projections 15 are provided at the base of the housing for attachment to a hardened wear -plate 16 interposed between the housing and the bolster. Rivets 17 or other suitable equivalent fastening means may he used for securing the heavy wear plate to the holster. The side walls 12 are also provided with inwardly extending lugs or trunnious 18 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The anti-friction element B is provided Vwith axially extending trunnions 19 at the ends thereof. As shown, the anti-friction element is adapted to roll back and forth on the wear plate 16 to either side oi' its normal central position, the end walls of the housing forming stops for limiting;r the rolling movementof the element. l j
In order to automatically return the antifriction element to itslnormal central positionwhen the load `has been removed therefrom, I have arranged a pair otplates or pendulums C at each end of the anti-friction element B,`fthese fheingindividually reerenced 2() and I21 for convenience oi' further description. The pendulum 20 is pivotally mounted intermediate its-ends on the trunnion 19 while the pendulum 21v is pivotally mounted intermediate fits endson the lug or trunnion 18. From the figures shown in'the drawing, it is apparent that lwhen the anti-:friction element is rolled to either side-.of its normal central position,asor instaneeuvhen it is rolled to the left asshown inFigure 1, the pendulums- 12O f mounted thereon will also be swung-to thellelft', while-the pendulums 21 will be swung-to the right, `as the latter pendulums arepivoted at 181-toa fixed partei the housing. lVhen the lload lis released,ithe pendu-lume #will swi ng to their normal `position, thus returiiing lthe antitrietion element to its normal central position. In order to assemble the device, I have arranged apertures 24 through the sidewalls 12 of the housing, these apertures being below the normal position of the pins 23 and having their centers in the are of travel of the pins 23. Before applying the Wear plate 16, the pendulums 21 are inserted within the housing and mounted upon the lugs 18. Then the anti-friction element having its pendulums 20 mounted upon its trunions is inserted within the housing through the bottom thereof (the housing preerably being inverted) whereupon the pendulums of each set are partially rotated until the pivot pins 23 may be driven through the apertures 24 in registry with therespective openings through the penduliuns 20 and 21. After this, the wear plate may be riveted in place, thus enabling the bearingv to withstand rough handling during shipment without losing any of its parts and also preventing accidental or intentional removal of the the parts when in place upon the bolster.
I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, but the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a. side bearing for railway cars, the combination with a retainer; of an antit'rietion elementl arranged to roll to either .side of normal position with respect to said retainer; means for returning said element to normal central position, including a vmember pivotally mounted on said element: intermediate its ends, one end of said member providing a weighted portion, and means carried by said retainer and connected with the opposite end of said member, said means being constructed to develop yieldable counter-active force to the movement of said end. 2` In an anti-friction bearing, the combination with a. housing adapted to be secured to a bolster; of an anti-friction element arranged to roll to either side of normal position therein; pendulums pivotally mounted on to the ends of said element; and auxiliary pendulums pivotally connected to the first mentioned pendulnms and to said housing, said pendulums co-operating to return said element to normal position.
3. In an anti-friction bearing, the com bination with a housing; ot an anti-:triction element therein adapted to roll to either side of central position; and a pair of pivotally inter-connected pendulums at each end of said element for returning it to its central position when free from load, the pendulums of each pair being swung in opposite directions when said element is actuated.
4f. In an anti-friction bearing, the combination with a housing; of an anti-friction element thereii] adapted to roll to either side of normal central position; and a pair of pivotally inter-connected members at the ends of said element for returning it to its central position, one of each pair of said members being pivoted to said element and the other pivoted to said housing.
5. ln an anti-friction bearing, the combination with a housingr adapted to be secured to a truck bolster and having inwardly extendingr lugs at its sides: of an anti-frie tion roller therein and having trunnions projecting from its ends; a pair ot pivotally inter-connected pendulums at. each end of said element; l'or returning it to ils normal central position when free from load, one of said pendnlums of each pair being pivoted to the trunnion of said element and the other piroted to the adjacent opposed lug of the housing.
G. In a side bearing for railway cars. the combination with a housing open at. its top and bottom. having side and end walls. flanges extending inwardly across the top of said side walls, and trunnions extending inwardly t'rom said side walls below said flanges; of a bearing plate arranged to be interposed between said housing and a bolster; an anti-friction roller adapted to roll on said plate between said side flanges and having trunnions projecting from the ends thereof lbeyond the edges of said flanges; and a pair ol pivotally inter-connected menibers between the ends of said element and the opposed walls of said housing. one of ach pair of members heilig pivotally mounted on one of said pairs of opposed trunnions.
