This invention relates generally to finish strips for vehicle bodies and consists of cer-- tain novel features of construction, combina- 'tions and arrangements of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. t

Referring now to the drawings, 1 is a door of the vehicle body having the upright pillars 2 and the intermediate cross bar or header 3. As shown, erably channel-shape and are provided with the lateral flan es 4 while the-cross bar 3 is also preferab y channel-shape and is provided with an u standing flange 5. Overlapping these pi ars and cross bar is a sheet metal panel 6 that constitutes the exterior nish of the door. -As shown, this panel 6 is secured at its edges to the fia'n es 4 and 5 and is provided betweenfthe ars with a suitable window o ening 7. o provide a neat appearance, t e (panel 6 is providal at the upper and side e ges of the opening 7 with the inwardly extending lateral flanges 8 and 9 respectivel that have L-shaped rabbet portions 10 an 11 secured to the pillars and header. Thus the anel 6 and Ganges 8 and 9 close the channe perspective view of the eader and cooperate therewith to form boxlile frame members.
Heretofore it has been a practice b some body manufacturers to secure strips o molding to the side walls of the dpillars to receive the window glass runs an to secure separate strips or panels of fabric trimming material to theinner walls of the pillars and the' pillars 2 are prefas s of the pillars and 'ii header to provide a neat finish for the interior of the vehicle body. With such'constructions, considerable time and labor has been required to form the separate parts referred to and to secure the same by separate assembly operations to the pillars and header. In the present' instance however this is accomplished in a single operation by providing metal finish strips 12 and 13 respectively that not only carry the fabric trimming material but also hold it in posi tion on the pillars and header. As shown, each strip 12 is preferably channel-shape and has the lateral flanges 14 ,and 15 respectively. Preferably the lateral fia-nge 14 is return-bent inwardly toward the base 16 of the channel and is spaced slight-ly from the inner side wall 17 of the strip 12, while the liange 15 projects outwardly from the side' wall 17 and overlaps 4the inner wall 18 of the pillar.` As shown this flange 15 is substantlally equal in width to the lnner wall 18lof the pillar and curves inwardly toward the same so as to hold suitable trimming material, as will be hereinafter described. Any suitable means such the screws 19 maybe used to secure the strips 12 to the pillars. As shown, these screws 19 extend through aligned openings 20 and 21 respectively in the outer and inner walls of the stri s 12 and engage suitable nuts 22 anchored within the pillars.
The body portion 23 of the nish strip 13 preferably corresponds to the header finish stri shown in United States Patent No. 1,487, 48, dated March 25, 1924, however the flange 24 of the body. portion is referably provided with an open returnent portion 25 that has a lateral flange 26 overlapping the inner wall 27 of the cross bar 3. As shown, the outer side 28 of the return-bent portion 25 is substantially equal in Width to the flange 24, while the lateral ange 26 is substantially equal in width to the inner wall 27 of the cross'bar 3. Any suitable means such as the screws 29 may be used to secure the strip 13 to the header cross bar. As shown these screws are received in suitable openings in the bodyportion 23 and extend between the return-bent portion 25 `and the channel portion 30 into suitable nuts 31 anchored in the cross bar 3..
BRIGGS MANUFACTUR- In use, the strips 12 are secured to the side walls of the pillars so that the bases 16 of the strips are spaced slightly from the transversely extending walls 32 of the rabbets 10 and the strip 13 is secured to the lower wall of the cross bar 3 so that the channel portion abuts the upright wall 33 of the rabbet 11. Any suitable channelshaped strips 34 and 35 respectively may be secured in the rabbets 10 and 11 to re-,

ma be used to secure the trimming materi 37 to the flange 15. Likewise a strip 40 of fabric trimming material is used to conceal the lateral fiange 26 of the strip 13 and is provided with the mar inal attaching portions 41 and 42 respective y. As shown, the marginal portion 41 is folded around the free edges of the iange 26 and is held thereby against the inner wall 27 of the cross bar 3, while the marginal portion v42 is received in the return-bent portion 25. Any suitable means such as glue may be used to secure the trimming material 40 to the Bange 26 and in the return-bent portion 25.
In Fi res 5 and 6 I have shown slightly modifie constructions in which wooden pillars 50 and a wooden header 51 have been substituted for the metal pillars 2 and header cross bar 3. As shown, the strips 53 and 54 respectively are identical in construction to the strips 12 and 13 and the manner of attaching the fabric trimmin material is the same as that shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive. With these constructions the screws 55 and 56 resplectively enga e directly with the wood 1 ars and he er to se cure the strips in p ace.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantage of my inventionwill be readily a parent, desire to have it understood that do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such chan es may be 'resorted to when' desired as' all within the scmof what is claimed. at I claim as my invention is:
1. A finish strip assembly comprising a finish strip having a channel-shaped portion,-and a ange proecting laterall outwardly from an edge/o said channel-s aped portion and disposed at substantiall right angles toone side wall of said channela channel for a glass run and shaped portion, and trimming material overlapping said flange and havin a marginal portion secured in said channel-shaped portion.
' 2. A finish strip assembly comprising a finish strip having a channel shaped portion provided with a fiange extending laterally from one side thereof and having an open return bent portion extending from the other side and terminating within the channel, and trimming material overlapping said Harige and having a marginal portion secured in said channel shaped portion between one wall thereof and the return bent portion o f the other wall.
3. The combination with a frame member having a rabbet extending longitudinally of one side thereof, of a channel shaped finish strip cooperating with the rabbet to form rovided with a Harige projecting laterally iiom one side thereof and an open return bent portion extending from the other side and terminating within the channel of the finish strip, trimming material overlapping said flange and having a marginal portion extending within the channel of the finish strip between one wall thereof and the return bent portion, and headed elements for securing the finish strip to the said frame member and for clamping the marginal portion of said trimming material within the channel thereof.
4. The combination with a frame member having a rabbet ortion extending longitudinally of one side thereof, of a channel shaped finish strip secured to said side and having its base portion cooperating with said rabbet portion to form a channel for a glass run, a lateral flange extending from one side of said finish strip and overlapping another side of said frame member, the other side of said finish strip being provided with an open return bent portion extending within the channel, and trimming materia overlappin said flan e and having a marginal portion secure in said channel'between the said return bent portion and one wall of the finish strip.
5. The combination with a frame member, of a finish strip having a hollow body portion secured to one side of said frame member, and having a ange pro'ectin laterally from said body ortion an 'over appin another side of said frame member, an trimming material overlapping said flange and having one marginal portion thereof secured in said body portion.
6. `The combination with a frame member, of a finish strip having a hollow body portion secured to one side of said frame member and having a flange projecting laterally from said body portion and overlapping another side of said frame member, and trimming material having portions respectively secured to said body portion, overlapping said fiange, and extending between said flange and frame member.
