" MINING MACHINE.
Application filed April 25, -1919, Serial No 292,667. Renewed November 2'3, 1925.
My invention relates to mining machines;
, It has for its-object to provide an improved 'machi'nesespecially adapted to cutting in a plane or many of'a plurality of planes above the bottom of the machine. Another object of my invention is to provide such an improved machine adapted to I cutting in a pluralityof planes. A further object of my invention is to provide im- 19 proved means especially adapted to use in connection witha standard type: of bottom cutter, whereby the same may be adapted proved construction will, however, hereinafter more fully appear. I j i j In'the accompanying drawings I have shown fonpurposes'of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice. j a In these drawings, a Fig. '1' is' a side elevation of a mounted cutter equipped with my improvement, the bar adjusting mechanism being shown in section to facilitate illustration."
Fig. 1 is a detail sectional view of'the clutch controlling mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a plan view-of the construction Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic plan view showing the machine in its different positions during the kerfbutt-in'goperation.
"Fig. 5 is adiagrammatic side elevation I showing the machine in different vertically adjusted positions. 7 p
Fig.6 is adiagrammatic end View showmg the machine in tilted position.
In this illustrative cbnstruction I have shown a mining machine frame or casing' l of usual type slidable o'nits bottom and herein having a shoe 2 adapted to slide over the mine bottom, and a'reversible motor'3 of any suitable type operatively connected through usual feeding mechanism- (not. Shem-1" to a feed operating member ,4
adapted when mtated by the motonto the machine in a. well known manner relative to flexible feeding means hereinin the form of a flexible feeding member 5 in turn guided by usual guiding members 6 and havingflexible feeding portions acting on the opposite ends ofthe machine frame. I I
In v my improved construction, an operative drivingv connection, herein in the form of a chain'7, is connected to a part-driven by the motor, herein to a sprocket8, and
extended above the shoe: 2 and .onopposite sides of the machine center line to the front end of the machine, where it engages a sprocket 9 herein having a lower sleeve 10 journaled on a vertical axis in a suitable bearing 11 herein carried 'on the-front end of a longitudinally 'disposed bottom extension 12 ona removable front head member ,13. and disposed over the front end of the shoe. aFiX'ed'to this sleeve 10,.as by a spline 14, is an upright member,.herein a shaft 15.
As shown, this shaft 15 has freely rotatable thereon at apoint adjacent and above the sprocket 9,"a gearf16, herein constantly meshing with a plurality of, laterally and re'arwardly disposed cooperating gears 17,
herein fixedto the lower ends of laterally spaced upstanding feeding members 18,
herein threaded and supported and .rotat- 1 ably mounted at their upper ends in top. ex.- tensions 19 formed on the front head 13.
Carried upon these rotating threaded members 18 is abracket 2'0, herein carrying nuts 21 adjustable on thethrea'dedmembers and also being provided with guiding members. 22, herein fitting around, and guided by vertically disposed lateral extensions 1 23 formed on the sides of the head 13. This bracket 20, in turn, carries a cutter bar 2 1, herein integrally united therewith, and having rotatably "mounted: thereon a usual cutter-chain 25 drivenf'from a cutter chain drivin gl sprocket 26,. herein rotatable with the shaft '15 and vertically adjustable on a spline 27 extending longitudinally of the upper end of said shaft. Also, it will be observed that I have provided fa Vertically adjustable clutch. member 28' likewise splined on the shaft 15 and normally held in inoperative position by a spring 29, and adapted when.
depressed manually to engage with cooperatnig clutch teeth 30for1nedon the hub of the gear lfi, andtherebyrthrottgh the gears and the feed screw mechanism, raisethe F of the machine so that the cutter chain will bracket and the bar bodily to vary the plane of .ioper ation. Attention is also idirected to the fact that astop, herein in the form of an annular flange 31 provides an ahi lii nt. sa v-whieh Ql' Q mem er 28 isnormally heldl bylitss pring.
In a preferred embodiment of my invention, the machine is truck mounted. Hereinil'tkis slidably and removably mounted in a well known manner in a trough-like supporting V and guiding member 32, herein fixed to and rotat'able with an upper swivel plate "33' swiveled at- 3fl on a lower swivel supporting member or plate 3 5 and adapted tobeiheld in any desired angular positi qI} 'fi 9 5 bring t-he bar 24 into any desired angle to jthe face. Herein, it will also be noted that the tilting means assume the form of supporting screws 39 pivotally connected at 'theirupper ends at 40 to opposite sides of the plate and adjustable bymeans of nuts 41 having operating hand wheels 42 there0n. As in a ,usualconstructionyit will also be observed that the plate 38 is herein 'slidajbjle longitudinally on guides 43 formed on a truck 4e and adapted to be Locked in any desired position th'ereon, herein by pins 45.
' The mining machine l is, as usualin this type of machine, also provided with a gear 46 adapte'dlto mesh with a cooperating gear 47 on 'a truck operatively connected in a usual manner tof'a truck driving shaft {l8 which is in turn connected through truck wheel driving connections 4:9 to the truck wheels 50 sothat, when the mining machine 1v is in a predetermined position upon the tr k t m tor the of'may be uti ed to p op l e u k u ng th nsport of the h ne a m ne l ce t0 a o h r- "In the operation of my improved con: struction it'will be observed that whether he min ng mac ne s a ie p n a t uck as shown, or used as a separate-entity in a o well known manner, the cutter bar thereof may be adjusted in such a manner asto vary the height of the kerf as desired, by, When.
- neces ary, s mp y nne g th l tc v 8 to the clutch teeth 30 on t'he gear 16 and therebyraising or lowering the bar. More particula ly, it Will e fited a t e a maybe adjusted vertically until the nuts 21 on the, bracket 20, engage with the extension 19 on thefront head 13, in which position it will be observed that the top of the bar is disposedsubstantially invthe plane of the top cut a slightly higher kerf. Here also it will he noted ,that when ethe dcsfired ,position of adjustmenthasbeen reached it "is only necessary to release the clutch member 28,
,whereuponzthe ;spring :29 will jfonce the same put-0 engagement the .okutch teeth 28 and into engagement with the abutment 31,
itherehy arresting further upward movement of the bar. Conversely, reversing the motor 3, the direction "of "movement of the bar may be reversedand the same returned to its lowest, positiiomflwherein it is adapted I to cut a fkerf substantially midway of the ,top and bottom of the machine, this limit of t av fb ng s l he y the ng men of the bar wit 1 the abutment 31. carried on th shah" lnth'e use of improved"construction in connection with a truck mounted machine,
it will be understood that the adjustment of the cutting mechanism is obta'in'edsubstantiaflly as described above. Here, however, it will be notedt'hat when'the cutter bar is disposed in [any given horizontal plane, the plane of the same may be tilted as 5 neccssa ry through the manipulation of the hand wheels 42 in such a manner as to bring the bar-into any desired angular variation of the positions obtained by, the vertical adjust-v ing mechanism. WVhen in this pos'ition' it will also be under-stood that the. machine I may then be operated on the truck to make the usual successive sumping, transverse,- and Withdrawal cuts,,sh0Wn at A A and A n Fig. 4:, to cutakerf in advance of the 1 machine, or maybe swung laterally and looked as shown at A to make a longwall cut, all as in a usual manner. As the mechan mfor so op rating and adjus ing h machine doesnot per se form a part of my present invention and is well. known, a more specific descriptibn ofthe same is believed to be unnecessary. I u 7 ,As a result ofmyimproved construction,
ard construction may be adapted to use as an overcutter by removing thegcutter bar and front head thereof and'attaching my improved front head and adjustable cutter bar mechanism in lieu thereof, WVhen thus equipped, it will also be observed that the machine maybe utilized at will as an ordinary shortwall machine slidable'upon its shoe or, if desired, as a mountedentry or longwall cutter, the-cutter bar being adjust able when the machine is. used in either of kerfs to be inserted at will substantially in the plane .of the top offthe machine or in any one of -a plurality of planes'disposed beneath the top thereof and herein above the transverse center line thereof.
